About the opportunity


SWCA is seeking a?Cultural Resources Intern?for Summer 2024 to support both office and field cultural resources projects in Sheridan, WY. Cultural Resources Interns will support a diversity of projects and will work with talented, multi-disciplinary teams of cultural resource professionals. Established in 1981, SWCA has a long-standing presence in the United States and is known for sound science and creative solutions.

Your role as a cultural resources intern will be assisting with cultural resources/archaeology data entry, artifact analysis, reporting, and fieldwork during the summer field season. You should be able to work outside during fieldwork sessions that generally last for a week or more.

?

This internship will occur during the Summer 2024 (June - August). Candidates who can start earlier than June 2024 will be considered and those who can remain past August may provide additional value. In addition to project work, the internship program includes regularly scheduled presentations by SWCA leaders.

This is a paid, full-time internship.? Interns will be paid between $17.00/hour

What you will accomplish


Cultural Resources Intern positions are usually both field and office based. ?Interns typically receive:

  • Hands-on experience with surveying and site recording methods.
  • Experience following local state Historic Preservation Office (SPHO) and federal agency guidelines for performing archaeological fieldwork.
  • Introduction to prehistoric and historic artifact identification.
  • Introduction to cartography and archaeological map analysis.
  • Opportunities to participate in various types of Cultural Resources Management fieldwork
  • Exposure to a nationally recognized cultural compliance consulting firm and lead professionals in the field
  • Coordination with academic staff to meet course credit requirements.
  • Help with project lifecycles to include proposal work, background research, and report writing


Experience and qualifications for success


Required?

  • Majoring or minoring in Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural Resource Management, architectural history, or related field.
  • Completion of at least 3 credits of archaeology courses, architectural history courses, or the equivalent.
  • Current enrollment in a community college, college, or university, pursuing a certificate of proficiency, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree with a focus on Cultural Resource Management, Anthropology, or Archaeology.? Individuals who completed a bachelor’s degree within?12 months of May 1, 2023 will also be considered.
  • Applicants that are pursuing a Masters degree will also be considered.?Ph.D. candidates are?not?eligible through this program.
  • Experience with cultural resources field work (e.g., archaeology, anthropology, architectural history, etc.) through classwork, honors thesis or Capstone projects, professional/intern experience, or volunteer work.
  • Accredited Field school certification preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Must have good communication, interpersonal skills, and attention to detail.
  • Must have ability and willingness to learn new survey and monitoring techniques and protocols.

Important for Field-Based roles:

  • Some position may require an ability to travel to the field 50%-75% of the time, including spending up to a week or two at a time at a field location.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, effectively execute tasks, and conform to shifting priorities and demands.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a 4WD vehicle on backcountry roads required.

Helpful Skills:

  • Familiarity with GPS devices and digital data collection, and/or mapping software such as ArcGIS.
  • Technical writing experience.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Resource Stewardship Program is seeking to fill a temporary cultural resources technician position.? This is a 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday, position and is based in north Denver.? This position provides a great entrance into the working worlds of Cultural Resources, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Conservation, Park Management and GIS in the beautiful state of Colorado.

This position’s responsibilities will primarily include assisting with coordination of cultural resource inventories, planning, interpretation and management and will assist in compiling the results of archaeological surveys (site forms, reports, maps) for submittals related to Section 106 and other state and federal historic preservation laws.? This will include historical research, database management, GIS work, program planning, and administrative duties.? The Technician will conduct research on prehistoric and historic aspects of the park and write reports and summaries and will include preparation of GIS data/maps.?? The Technician will travel to state parks across Colorado to assess and monitor cultural resources.? Responsibilities will include communication to park staff regarding state and federal historic preservation compliance processes for cultural resources.

The Technician will assist in field inventories of other resources, including biological and geological, conduct meetings with partners, volunteers and contractors in the office and in the field.? The Technician will conduct other program administrative tasks such as organizing/filing electronic and paper files.?
There will be a field component using ESRI Field Maps to map resources on the parks and the applicant should be physically able and willing to hike and camp and have own camping equipment (tent and sleeping bag).?

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants should have a bachelor's degree and a background in history, archaeology, anthropology, park management, cultural resources management, GIS or related fields
  • Must be proficient with ArcGIS and Microsoft Office experience using Excel, Word, and Access is required.?
  • The ability to work with autonomy, good organizational skills, as well as good written and oral communication skills is required.?

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in archaeology.
  • At least 1 year of experience using ArcGIS software.
  • Experience with historical research and writing.
  • Experience with cultural resource inventory and management in Colorado.
  • Solid understanding of Colorado Cultural Resource Management laws/regulations and public land management principles.

Archaeological Field Director/ Principal Investigator

POWER Engineers, Inc., is seeking a full-time Senior Archaeological Principal Investigator for a leadership position in our Environmental Division – Resource Assessment and Mapping, Western Cultural Resources Department in California. This is salaried position with a pay range between $85,000 and $115,000.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a Principal Investigator you will help build the environmental project team focused on transmission/distribution lines, fire hardening, renewable energy, transportation projects, environmental surveys, NEPA/CEQA analyses, and permitting services. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to lead archaeological survey work on federal and other public lands in California and write reports for federal and state agency submittal. Projects may involve extended periods of fieldwork in remote areas including other West Coast states. Experience working with and executing projects regulated by CEQA as well as permittable experience on federal lands throughout the State is highly desirable. Remote monitoring experience and willingness to participate in these projects is also highly desirable. The position would report to one of our California office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location.

Responsibilities will include technical support, writing support, and providing cultural resource management (CRM) expertise to the development and execution of projects in California and surrounding states. The PI should possess an advanced understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing, recording, mapping, and evaluating archaeological sites and supporting field surveys. Conducting field surveys (pedestrian and shovel test surveys) using topographic maps, aerial photographs, and ESRI Field Maps and other GPS data collection software will be a regular part of this role.

This position requires the ability to work long hours, in difficult or remote environments, and in varying weather conditions. The position will also require the ability to work with and lead groups composed of diverse personalities. A positive attitude and ability to accept direction is a must, as well as the ability to work independently and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction. Effective communication skills are important for success in this role and will be called on frequently.

Required Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in Archeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline
  • 5+ years of previous California CRM field experience
  • Skill in planning, writing, and reviewing cultural resource reports in support of Class III, NEPA, and CEQA reports.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment, technology, and paperwork used in the recording and documenting of archeological sites and artifacts.
  • Developing, planning, and executing all aspects of cultural resource projects in support of CEQA and Section 106 undertakings in California
  • Executing cultural resource file searches within the California CHRIS system
  • Ability to learn and communicate local cultural history and material in new project areas.
  • Ability to work independently, and to fully plan and execute personal assignments with minimal instruction.
  • Knowledge and willingness to learn, apply, and communicate POWER company health and safety standards.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to successfully lead teams composed of diverse personalities of varying skill levels.

    • Experience in utility transmission, pipeline, and renewable energy projects

    • Experience developing cost estimates, scopes of work, and schedules for complex field surveys and larger CRM projects.
    • Experience with block and linear survey, background research and leading field crews
    • CPR/First Aid/OSHA certifications, or experience with these certifications.

BCA conducts project work throughout the central-western United States, with a significant focus on the Great Plains region. Position Objectives
Archaeology Southwest seeks a flexible, resourceful, and detail-oriented individual to help prevent, detect, and respond to violations of the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) on Tribal Lands. The individual will be part of the BIA ARPA Assistance Program that conducts and supports archaeological resource damage assessments, produces damage assessment reports, facilitates ARPA training sessions, and engages with public audiences to prevent looting and increase reports of violations.

Lived or work experience in a Native American community is required. The selected candidate will work closely with archaeologists, Tribal, Federal, and state government officials, law enforcement professionals, and legal specialists to advance the goals of the BIA and Archaeology Southwest ARPA Assistance Program. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in public and professional presentations, cultural resource management fieldwork, and building collaborations with diverse teams. Job Description:

Harris Environmental Group (HEG) is looking to hire three or more Archaeological Field Technicians for multiple cultural resources survey projects in Northern and Central Utah.

Crews will be working 8-day sessions, Thursday to Thursday, at 10-hours per day (including rated paid travel time). The pay rate for field technicians is dependent on contracts, but most are consistent with SCA wage rates for project counties.(The typical schedule is 8 days on, 6 days off.)

Field Technicians are responsible for assisting the Crew Chief in identifying and recording cultural resources in the field. This includes identifying and documenting all types of regional artifacts and features, thoroughly filling out appropriate site forms, site/artifact photography, navigating survey transects with Garmin GPS, and mapping sites using Trimble GPS.

Ideal candidates will be located in or around Northern Utah (especially Salt Lake City area), as we are not able to fly techs in and out for field sessions, nor do we provide for housing in-between scheduled field sessions.

Qualifications:

? Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field

? Accredited field school (preferred)

? At least 12 months of supervised experience in CRM pedestrian survey (preferred)
? Ability to work in hot conditions, inclement weather, and remote locations
? Ability to hike up to 10 miles a day in rugged terrain while carrying up to 40 lbs. of gear and water (required)
? Proficiency with basic Garmin GPS devices and familiarity with Trimble GPS (using Terrasync) is preferred
