Anyone in Northern California want to help out?
We have an unfortunate situation that we need help with. We need someone to volunteer to foster an ill F4 female Savannah kitten of approximately 8 months of age, brown spotted tabby. Savannah Rescue of course will be paying all veterinary costs. The kitten has been ill since arrival from the breeder and the buyer has given up. The upper respiratory seems viral in origin but there is an additional corneal infection which appears to be bacterial and possibly a secondary infection. Until we have the kitten further evaluated by a veterinarian it seems unclear exactly what the situation is. The current antibiotic eyedrops seem inadequate, but I do know that better and stronger ones are available and hope that they would do the trick. Lysine supplementation seems to be improving the kitten's situation indicating that the condition is controllable. Unfortunately I am unable to take this kitten in as I will be leaving the country next week and cannot ask my housesitter to take on this case. The kitten cannot be shipped back to the breeder in this condition. We need a local (the kitten is located in Hayward, CA) home that would be willing to medicate and care for this kitten, with the ability to decide to adopt the kitten if it all works out. I hope to have pictures of the kitten soon and will be able to supply them to interested people that are willing to open their hearts and homes to this kitten in need. Let me know if you can help! There are wonderful folk in this world!
Sometimes in Rescue you can feel that there are so many people that just don't care enough, when you deal with cats surrendered for bogus reasons, or such minor reasons that are entirely fixable... and you deal with breeders that think their responsibility ends when they ship the kitten/cat out. THEN, you meet people like the couple I welcomed into my home today. We've had a sickly kitten in Rescue for some weeks/months now. She was surrendered with a severe ocular infection, and it has taken numerous vet and specialist visits with it still not completely cured and the specialist concerned that there is underlying FIP there. I'd been talking to this couple about this kitten and they met her and fell in love. I explained that we couldn't feel good about adopting her out until we could make sure she did not have a terminal disease. But they asked if they could take her home anyway. I've had to keep her in an enclosure in my garage as I cannot put her in with my own cats, and I felt bad about this as she is young (she's ~8 months old now) and so darn sweet and lovable. They said that they wanted to make sure she had a happy life, even if it was short because of FIP...and that if in another month we found out that, at least she'd have a month of being loved. Of course that made me cry. So Kristine and I decided to allow them to take the kitten home, and we told them we would waive any adoption fee because of this situation, even though Rescue (and my personal bank account) is out over $800 in vet bills for her. They brought a check with them, saying that it was a small donation to Rescue as they admired what we did. I didn't look at it while they were there, but opened it when they left. They gave Savannah Rescue $500! Such generous hearts...and at a time that Savannah Rescue really needed it. Kristine and I are very touched by these people's hearts. Please send strong thoughts and pray that this kitten truly does not have FIP, and can live a long and happy life with these wonderful people. In another month we will be re-evaluating and talking again with the infectious disease specialist and hoping that we can rule this out pretty certainly. Neutered F3 male available in Mississippi
Hi, Rini is a brown spotted tabby F3B Savannah male, neutered and up to date on vaccinations, negative for FeLV and clear on fecal testing. He was surrendered with medication for asthma but has been weaned off this under veterinary supervision and has not coughed, sneezed or wheezed once. As he is now states away from where he was surrendered, we suspect he had allergies to that specific location or home. He is as easy as a dog to give medication to, he'll take it right out of your hand! Since coming off those meds he's been gaining weight, but the pictures we have are not showing this. He's been hard to photograph for his foster mom as he wants to headbutt and rub on people not sit there for the camera! He's very loving and sociable with people, he's best friends with another SV at her home also. We're proud to say that Rini's breeder has been very responsible with this case. She has completely covered our costs with transport and vetting for Rini, but she is in Canada and therefore we feel it best to search out an adoptive home here in the US rather than process CITES documentation to export him back. Please contact me (brigitte@...) or Kristine (gattobello@...) if you would be interested in offering Rini a home. Of course we will favor those homes that would not require shipping, but our main aim is a loving forever home for him. His adoption fee will be $200, plus any shipping (if necessary). To view pictures, change your membership settings!
Within hours of posting Rini as an available cat, we've had a LOT of replies. We cannot continue to keep individually sending pictures to interested parties. This is a volunteer position and we don't always have time for the task which increases our workload considerably unnecesssarily. YahooGroups does not store pictures, so you will NOT be able to view pictures on the YahooGroups webpage for this group. We highly suggest that you visit your YahooGroups page and CHANGE your membership settings to receive "individual emails" rather than view messages on the internet. This will send emails to your email program's inbox, and with many other lists this means a number of emails a day... BUT this is a notification-only list, not a chat list, therefore you will not be receiving many emails this way. If you go to the webpage, http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/SVCC-Rescue/ , in the top left corner you will see your name, email address and then "Edit Membership". Click on that link and it will take you to the page to select "individual email" and then scroll down to click on the blue box "save changes". If you are joined receiving "individual emails" you will receive the pictures of available cats as they are posted. Thus with one email I can share pictures of Rini with you all, rather than having to send out many many individual emails and having to attach pictures. Please help us with this, thanking you in advance! Sincerely, Brigitte -- Brigitte Cowell Kirembo Savannahs www.kirembosavannahs.com brigitte@... More on Rini...
Hi, We are still considering applications for Rini. We truly don't want to ship Rini, he's a gentle soul and we feel that shipping cargo would be really hard for him. We are giving preference to people that would either drive to Mississippi to fetch him OR that would fly to a nearby airport and take him back in cabin (in a carrier under the seat). There is a smaller airport close (Gulfport-Biloxi, I think the code is GPT) but also New Orleans is within reach and the foster home could easily bring him there. So you might want to consider contributing to New Orleans' economy by planning a weekend trip there and then having the bonus of taking Rini home with you :-) Rini has not been introduced to any dogs at his foster home but his former home had a chihuahua and aussie shepherd that he was reported to love. So we would assume with proper introductions that Rini would be fine with dogs. Attached is the adoption questionnaire that we use to screen applicants. If you can agree to pick Rini up in person (as described above) and are interested in adopting him then please fill it out and return to us (brigitte@... or gattobello@...). Thank you! Rini has been adopted
Hi, I am sorry that this has taken so long, Kristine and I have been very busy after being away at a show the weekend before... and so I have not updated the list as soon as I would have liked. Rini, the F3 SV, has found his new home. We are currently arranging his pickup from his foster home but feel very certain that this will work out. We are so pleased with the wonderful homes that offered for Rini! It was really difficult for us to make a decision, and so that delayed us quite some days as we went back and forth over the options. Almost makes us feel bad that we don't have MORE Savannahs in Rescue to offer you all...but of course the lack of SVs in Rescue is a GOOD thing :-) Thank you all for the kind offers, and please be patient as we never know when the next Savannah will come to us and need a great home right near you! Looking for fosters
Hi, This is a task that Kristine and I have been meaning to get onto for some time. We need more foster homes. We'd like to have a nice healthy list across the US of people that could take in a cat or two if they had to. We understand that many breeders worry about infection, and of course they should be careful. But please consider being able to temporarily being able to erect a great dane crate in the garage away from your cats... even such a thing may be very useful to Rescue in the short term. In those cases, it may only be a couple days, long enough to get that kitty a health cert and onto a plane to a longer-term foster. For the pet owners, fostering is a feel-good experience. The poor kitties do not deserve the disruption to their lives, they do not deserve to be discarded, they are scared and unsettled. Being able to help them and see them find wonderful new homes where they will be adored really is a wonderful feeling. And of course, if it should happen that that kitty turns into your own pet then so be it. We do feel that the foster should be able to adopt the cat if it works out that way. In general, the cats we've had into Rescue have not arrived sick and have not stayed in Rescue long at all. Savannah Rescue is fortunate enough to have hundreds of folks on our email list that truly JUMP on any available Savannah. The work is often in wading through the great homes to find the most perfect one. And lastly, we don't get a lot of Savannahs into Rescue. Indeed, recently we've found that many of the breeders of the cats we are contacted about have been ready, able and willing to take back their own cats. It's been really pleasing to see this...even if it is the right thing to do, we all know that not all breeders are created equal. Even though we've been fortunate recently we DO need to have some foresight, and having a list of people that would consider helping out if need be, that would be great! Please help Kristine and I reduce our stressload by volunteering to consider being on our foster list. Having a list is a great start to being able to deal successfully with an unexpected influx of cats. There's no predicting when that may happen! Please email one of us, brigitte@... or gattobello@... , if you would consider being on our list. Thank you! F4 Kittens for Adoption
We are excited to be able to offer for adoption some Savannah kittens. Kittens rarely come into Rescue. But these ones did and they are available. Unlike some situations where a cat comes into Rescue with some behavioural or heasvlth issues, there guys are perfectly fine all around, other than they are temporarily homeless. We have three available Savannah kittens currently in Rescue. Two girls and one boy. Their mother is an F3 Savannah that accidentally was bred by a domestic shorthair male, hence they all have white on them (-: We would prefer a local placement if possible, the kittens are being fostered in San Diego, California. They are healthy, have had their shots and very well socialized. They will be spayed/neutered, FELV/FIV tested and microhipped before they go to their new homes, they will be ready to to their new homes in mid-July. If you are interested in giving one of these babies a forever home, please email Brigitte (brigitte@...) and me (gattobello@...). We are asking a $250.00 adoption fee for them. KRISTINE C. AVAILABLE F5 SAVANNAH MALE/RETIRED BREEDER
Message After careful consideration, Brigitte and I have decided to offer this lovely boy on our Rescue List. His name is Chike and he is almost two years old. He is a tall and lovely cat, a B registered Savannah. Chike is not a true rescue, only because Brigitte and I were the original breeders. He was sold to another breeder who quit breeding and neutered him. She then sold him to a pet home where he did not do well because the existing cat there was old and had hip dysplasia and did not want to deal with an active, playful Chike. When this breeder was told about Chike not doing well with the elderly cat, she unfortunately told the owner to contact Rescue, which the owner did. Of course, as the original breeders, we took Chike back and he is living with me in San Diego. He has no bad habits, does not spray and wants only his forever home with lots of people and hopefully one other high energy kitty to play with. We are asking a $1,000.00 adoption fee for him. $250.00 will go directly to Savannah Rescue. We then plan to give the pet buyer back some his money, although there will not be enough left to totally compensate him. As always we prefer a local placement or someone who will travel to pick him up. Please let us know - either me - Kristine Alessio, Esq. - gattobello@..., or Brigitte - brigitte@... if you would like to provide Chike with his forever home. KRISTINE C. ALESSIO, ESQ. Available F3 B Female
Gia is available for adoption. She is an F3 B Savannah female and will be spayed this Friday. Her adoption fee is $200.00, plus any additional fees for transport. She is currently in San Diego, CA with me. Gia would do well in a home with maybe one or two mellow cats and she is okay with children. Introduction to Savannahs
Hello to all our new members, Kristine and I would like to welcome you to the group. We do not normally post informational messages, this is only to be a notification list of available Savannahs, but with the sudden influx of a lot of new members we thought maybe one message was needed. We suspect that a number of you have recently "discovered" Savannahs from the Cats101 program on Animal Planet. We think it great that you wish to adopt a cat in need, but wanted to clear up an important point that many may be mistaken about due to this program. I am proud of Mondo that was featured in the program, he was the very leggy Savannah featured in the home environment (not the SV that was in the studio on the white background). Mondo is probably the tallest Savannah I have ever seen let alone bred, BUT he is not the norm. The Savannah is a tall and elegant build of cat, but they are NOT typically twice the size of a domestic cat. The average Savannah is taller and longer than most cats but often weighs exactly the same. The lower generations (past the larger F1 and F2 generations) are not usually huge cats. We feel that this program may have given a false impression of our breed, and do not wish folk to be disappointed by the Savannahs they may see on this list as available. Savannahs of F1 and F2 generation are rarely seen in Rescue anyway, we more commonly see the F4 and F5 generations, and they are normally not nearly the size of the cats featured on TV. Please find attached a pdf article on Savannahs that may help you learn more about our breed. Tsuki is Ready for a New Family
We are pleased to offer Tsuki (pronounced soo-key), a large, F2 Savannah male for adoption. Tsuki is 1.3 years young, and has no bad habits, he is a very friendly and outgoing playful boy once he gets to know you. He likes children, and his former owner stated he gets along with dogs and other cats too. A very goofy boy, he had more fun playing the photo background when I was trying to take his picture than posing for pictures. He likes to play with little cat balls and also wand toys. Tsuki was surrendered by his former owner when bad economic times rendered her unable to care for him. He had a bladder infection, was not neutered and was urinating inappropriately. Now that he is healthy and neutered he no longer has a problem using his litterbox. He is FIV/FELV negative and micro chipped. The perfect home for Tsuki would include a family that can spend a lot of a time with him playing and also one or two other cats that are high energy breeds or a high energy dog breed. Tsuki's new family must be able to drive to San Diego, California to pick him up as he gets very frightened being in a crate and shipping him is an absolute last resort. His adoption fee is $250.00. If you are ready to make Tsuki part of your family, please send a completed adoption application to both me (gattobello@...) and Brigitte (brigitte@...) . Kristine C. Hello everyone, Just updating everyone on Tsuki the F2 male who was announced as eligible for adoption. After carefully reviewing everyone's applications, we were very happy that there were a few homes in Southern California who were qualified for Tsuki. We really wanted to have him do the minimum amount of travel. We have selected a home for Tsuki and are pleased that soon he will be in his forever home with his new family. Thank you everyone for your applications. It warms both Brigitte and my heart to know there are so many people who are willing to step up and give a rescue kitty a wonderful home. Kristine C. F6A spayed female available in Michigan
Tobi is a pretty F6 Savannah girl that was surrendered to Savannah Rescue with peeing issues. She has been vetted and is up-to-date with vaccines. Her foster home reports that Tobi is very sweet and friendly and playful, but does occasionally spray. She has been unable to keep Tobi separate from other cats, she currently lives with one other cat in the house, therefore we are anticipating that a household with no other cats would suit Tobi much better than anything else. There is also the possibility that Tobi was imperfectly spayed and has retained some ovarian tissue, we were unable to persuade the foster's vet that a hormone test was warranted. Therefore we are offering Tobi to a suitable home with the idea that either you have no other pets (therefore no reason for Tobi to feel at all threatened) or you are willing to work with her issues. She is NOT peeing all over the house. Please let one of us know if you wish to help Tobi. gattobello@... or brigitte@... . Thank you! Tobi needs adoptive or foster home
I recently posted Tobi, F6 spayed 3year old female, as available. We understand that she is not an easy placement as we have been unable to resolve her spraying issue. We feel that the next step is that Tobi needs to be housed by herself, not necessarily in a house but in her own room. Unfortunately, Tobi's current foster home is not able to do this and Tobi has had to share her quarters. Although her spraying has been infrequent, it has not stopped and we feel that she may need to be an only pet. We would love it if someone would volunteer to foster Tobi that could keep her in a separate room. If you might be interested in this, please contact me or Kristine at brigitte@... or gattobello@... to learn more. Thank you!
