Don't read this unless you know you're going to die
A 97 Year Old Philosopher Faces His Own Death https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX6NztnPU-4 Although there’s no good reason to fear death, I do. Why? The silent answer: There is no point. It’s a foolish question. Loneliness and absence is an absolute part of my life. My wife is gone. I know fortunate I’ve been to have had a happy life, but half of me is gone now. The presence of an absence. Death is frightening. As messy as life is, I’d still like to hang around. I just go on existing…and waiting. Waiting until I have to say goodbye.

Asking for help
Hi, all, I'm wondering if any of you would be willing and able to help me complete a GoFundMe to help my daughter get her truck repaired. She's on the road with miles to go and has stopped to get help. The GoFundMe campaign has stalled out before reaching the needed goal. Help if you are willing and able. Here's the link where you can read the story and donate if you’re so inclined: https://gofund.me/2dcf05e2 Sharing the link with others is extremely helpful, too. Thanks for being someone I can ask for help! And thanks in advance for any donation you can manage. Reminder that we meet tomorrow at 4 6
Hi All. From the email exchange between last time (which we missed the meeting) and now, it feels as if commitment to the group might be waning. Personally I was excited about our idea of planning a model program that could become a paid subsidiary if SeniorCare. Do others of you feel that is a project worth working on? If so we could begin to talk about possible components/structure of it when we meet tomorrow. Let's get creative together!

Missed meeting yesterday 9
We missed meeting yesterday. We had previously set the schedule as happening every 2nd and 4th Thursday. Nancy was out of town and I was just out of it, so it didn’t happen. Saira was alert but got no response when she reached out to me because I was preoccupied. Sorry, Saira. Next meeting, 4th Thursday, April 27! In the interest of full disclosure and honesty I have to say that I personally am experiencing diminished interest in the group since participation seems to be limited to (what?) 4 or 5 people? Not very “robust” or stimulating, to say the least. And that feels to me like a microcosm of the overall energy and participation in our Timebank in general. [Insert big sigh of frustration.] There will be (I predict) a noticeable lack of responses to this email which will exemplify the lack of participation that disheartens me! And I am definitely NOT “just sayin’”—that popular way cliché folks use to pull away from any accountability or expectations of responsibility that might come from speaking the truth. Discussion for tomorrow's meeting--Thursday, March 30, 2023 2
If you don’t own a copy of Dr. Gawande’s book “Being Mortal” it’s high time you get one! In his 4th and 5th chapters he covers the original creation of the original “Assisted Living HOME”, created by Karen Wilson in 1983. And he notes how Unlike that highly successful original home are the so-called “Assisted Living” (AL) facilities out there. Once Karen’s work had shown that AL really, really, really works, it took off and immediately started getting watered down and exploited by profit based corporation. It’s to the point now that anyplace slaps “Assisted Living” on their letterhead and think it means something. In most cases it’s a lie. Suggested reading: Gawande Ch4 & 5. I’ve attached some images of 7 pages for those who don’t yet have their own copy—enough for us to start this conversation. I then propose that we take a field trip to Dedham, Ma, to tour one of the places Gawande praises as a true descendant of Karen Wilson’s AL idea. I’ve written to Newbridge on the Charles to start the process of getting a tour arranged. https://www.hebrewseniorlife.org/newbridge Take a look via this link. March 30: reminder of agenda for next meeting
For March 30, we have decided to pick up where we left off a couple of weeks ago. First we'll share what value we have gotten from attending these meetings so far. Then we'll explore one (or two) of the models for aging in place to see if we think it's realistic to make that happen here.

This time in advance! Let's meet March 30 2
Hi Everyone, So sorry to wait until the day of our meeting to send a reminder. We had a small, lively meeting yesterday. I introduced people to the Twin Lights Village website, and we agreed that the structure is VERY similar to a TimeBank (minus the expectation of reciprocity). For March 30, we have decided to pick up where we left off a couple of weeks ago. First we'll share what value we have gotten from attending these meetings so far. Then we'll explore one (or two) of the models for aging in place to see if we think it's realistic to make that happen here. Please chime in to let us know if this sounds like a good plan. Hope to see you in two weeks!

Meet today!
Dear Everyone, It may be too late to write to you about today's meeting using the Sage-ing email. I have an idea for us and I want to get it out to you. With the caveat that Twin Lights Village is unsure about accepting new members, I want to respond to the request by some of you to show you the website and answer any questions I can about how it's going to operate. I'm trying to get a Zoom link that we can use and will send that ASAP.

The Village model is based on the principles and practices of belonging, reciprocity, and mutual aid. Villages are intentional communities that offer social connections, help from intergenerational volunteers, and access to expertise to support healthy aging at home. Some Village members and potential members have struggled over the years to feel a true sense of belonging. This may be true for your LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community members who may fear being out due to discrimination and stigma. When Villages make a commitment to diversity and equity, inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity, it can provide those who identify as LGBTQ+ with a real sense of belonging. Let's Come Together Thursday 6
My Friends, Please sign on to our Sage-ing group call this Thursday at 4. We have a plan for the discussion! First we want to ask each person if there is a particular benefit they have gained from participating in the group so far. That will be helpful in discerning what value we’ve already generated. After that (if there’s time and if not, next time) we want to pick one of the many models that are out there to support seniors aging in place. Using our imaginations and knowledge, let’s explore how we might bring that model to a reality. If we do such an exercise a few times, it may become clearer which model makes the most sense for us to pursue. Hope you like these ideas (generated in a call between Ed and me) and that we’ll see you Thursday. With love, Nancy
