Photographs for your edification 2
Good morning here in Australia, I am an historian who mainly works with sound recordings and have owned a special ‘for historical purposes only’ vinyl and CD & DVD label since 1978. It’s called Lyric and my works sit in the State Library Of Victoria since that time. Recently, I was driven to write to our Federal Minister of the Arts, Hon. Tony Burke about the proposed funding cuts to a special a unique service on-line called TROVE. It has all sorts of content and links to our local entertainment, sports and celebrity artists in history. Many of our newspapers are available going back 100 years. The data and links to in-person visits and analysis of history are found there as well. My works number over 3,000 projects. Recently, I was asked to look at a series of photographs on TROVE by legendary photographer Laurie Richards. Incredibly, 5,000 or so are available to view on-line. Another 63,000 are alas, in storage. The Laurie Richards career spanned from the 1940’s through to about 1980. I was amazed when I started looking at the images in beautiful black and white shots taken by Mr. Richards that so many of the 5,000 photographs were “unidentified” people. Everyone from celebrities like HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, to Hollywood stars, and American pop culture, like Tab Hunter, Tommy Sands, The Everly Brothers, Billy Eckstine, Johnny Mathis, Artie Shaw, Jerry Colonna and Buddy Rich!!! I guess it’s the dawn of the new era of bureaucracy and ignorance is displayed by well paid staff members in government positions. But enough of my silly old man, grumpiness. Anyway, in these photographs taken by Laurie Richards in January, 1959 were some unidentified images taken at the St. Kilda Cricket Ground, here in Melbourne and Sabrina is on show with some eager fans and cricket players of renown. I attach them for your files. It would have taken a ‘million years’ to discover these because of the TROVE staff mislabelling the images. I am a little uncertain who the star cricket players are with Sabrina, but I have a sports personality visiting me tomorrow to view the photographs. He’s a legend himself and at 95 is absolutely remarkable. A former cricket and football legend, football coach and radio broadcaster, he stands tall and straight and still has a great command of the English language and how to pronounce the words, correctly! So, here are the photographs, which I don’t think you would have seen before. I checked your website and they didn’t appear to be there. I hope it brings pleasure for your website, and yourself. Geoffrey J. Orr Lyric Private CD’s/DVD’s BTW, I sent photographs of the Duke of Edinburgh in Melbourne in 1954 to King Charles’ offices a few weeks ago. No reply, but I think things were quite busy there. The 8 fantastic shots of Tab Hunter in the collection have been sent on to his website and the moderator who is Allan Glaser was Tab’s partner for 35 years. He was gobsmacked with delight. Welcome to the Sabrina Group!
Hello, and welcome to the group that only exists to discuss Sabrina (Norma Ann Sykes) instead of Donald Trump or the current state of the ozone layer. Feel free to ask, contribute, or just wonder how our wonderful girl lived her remarkable life. Regards, Mark
