Raymarine GA-200 not appearing as data source

Hi, folks,
?
I just finished installation of a Raymarine AIS-700 and the Raymarine passive GPS antenna, the GA-200. I have the VHF radio (a Standard Horizon GX-2100) also connected to the AIS-700 which has its own internal antenna splitter.
?
The GA-200 antenna is mounted in an ideal location high up on the dinghy davits with a clear view of the sky. Its cable is connected to the AIS-700, NOT directly to the MFD.?
?
The AIS-700 is connected to the Seatalkng network.?
?
I booted up the MFD and assumed that I would see either the AIS-700 or the GA-200 as an alternate GPS data source, but it only lists the internal GPS of the MFD.?
?
On the chart, the well-populated satellite list, boat location and AIS target list are all correct. Everything seems perfectly copacetic.
?
The MFD is a Raymarine eS98 running Lighthouse 3.
?
All the other data sources (wind, speed, AP control unit etc) are correct.
?
I checked and rechecked the GA-200 cable connection to the AIS unit.
?
I also disconnected the GA-200 cable from the AIS-700 and connected it directly to the appropriate port on the back of the MFD. Same result: the GA-200 did not appear as a GPS data source.
?
Before I start laboriously dismounting the GA-200 to test continuity, here is my question: is what I'm seeing (or not seeing) the result of the fact that the GA-200 is a passive antenna meant only to boost the signal to the internal MFD processor? So that the MFD does not consider it a separate data source?
?
May thanks for patiently wading through this.

Carter,
ON my system with a Vaspar ais and dedicated gps working with an ES7. The dedicated gps does show up as an alternative gps for the MFD. I don’t have it function as such. I use the internal. But it did show up there without me doing anything special.?

Hi, Randy,
?
I also had the Vesper XP8000 on my S38 and the Simrad MFD did show it as a source. In fact I remember choosing it as my GPS data source.
?
But now I'm immersed in the Raymarine multiverse and trying to get comfortable with it, so am still a bit low on confidence. Plus the GA-200 is a standalone unit, unlike the integrated Vesper GPS.

The GA200 is a passive antenna, and is therefore not a Seatalkng device. It just presents a stronger RF signal to the AIS than the AIS internal antenna.

The fact that the AIS-700 doesn't show as an alternate GNSS source is a concern.? Does it show up as a Seatalkng device and present data to the MFD?

Carter, the AIS700 doesn't get its power from the N2K connection but a separate power connector.? Are you sure it's getting power?

The GA200, as you noted, is just an passive antenna and will never be seen as a device.

Dan and Jim,
?
1. Yes, the AIS-700 appears in the networked device list.?
?
2. Yes, I provided the AIS-700 with its own 12v power source and it shows a green status light which according to the manual means that it is operating normally.
?
I also contacted FLIR/Raymarine customer service and here is his amusing reply:
?
"Hello Carter Brey,
Thank you for your inquiry. This still baffles me every time someone asks(the answer and not the question). The truth is that the AIS700 does not share it's position data with any device in any data type.

That's weird! The fact that their own product support guy doesn't understand it either is doubly weird.

Dan,
?
I know, right?! I miss Vesper.?
?
At any rate, it looks as though it's a case of SNAFU and I'll stop worrying about it.

I agree that it is weird that position cannot be output from the AIS700, either on N2K or NMEA0183. There may be a technical reason, but more probably it was made by the marketing team!
Raymarine do not make the AIS 700 completely in house. The AIS boards are made by SRT (whose marketing brand is em-trac) The equivalent unit from em-trac is the B953, which does actually allow output of GPS data on both N2K and NMEA0 0183 and it is one of these that I have on board Chardonnay - which has a relatively recent ICOM M506 VHF, but unfortunately the version without N2K.
I do have to say that part of the problem is with VHF Radio manufacturers, who have been pounding us with the (very real) importance of DSC and the attendant requirement for position to be available at the radio for distress purposes as well as its added benefits for private call and reply etc for years, but yet have been incredibly slow to incorporate N2K into their products as the standard for position input.
?
As I have been typing this, I did have the thought that perhaps the method Raymarine have for ignoring own ship AIS transmissions in its received data could be the sticking point. Raymarine displays use the proximity of the AIS receiver to the vessel's main GPS receiver to determine whether to ignore a broadcast deemed to be from its own ship, but I guess that would all depend upon who wrote the software. If for instance the AIS700 were to use the main GPS position to figure out own ship and then rebroadcast it on the N2K network or over NMEA 0183, this may cause data loops.
Lastly, I would like to say that knowing Joel at Raymarine personally, he is undoubtedly my go to man there, very knowledgeable and is a straight shooter, who will always go the extra mile to get answers.

Hi Carter,
?
Might be a dumb question, but do you have the VHF turned on?
