The Saskatoon Motorcycle Ride for Dad
2
Greetings All… The Saskatoon Motorcycle Ride for Dad thru Sponsorship and Rider pledges, raises money to provide Education and Awareness about Prostate Cancer, and to fund Research to Find a Cure for Prostate Cancer. The money we raise in Saskatoon, stays in Saskatchewan and to date we have raised approaching 2 million dollars. Our annual parade, consisting of our pledge earners on motorcycles have numbered 250 to 550 riders. The last few years our numbers have been in the vicinity of 300 riders. This year’s 2024 Saskatoon Motorcycle Ride for Dad Parade is our 15th Anniversary and is on Saturday the 15th of June starting from The Western Development Museum at 1030hrs. Traditionally our parade route travels from the WDM north along Lorne Avenue, across the Sid Buchwald bridge to 20th Street, then east to Spadina Cres, then north to Pinehouse Drive where it turns west and travels up the hill to Lawson Mall. Last year… due to road construction on Spadina Cres. the route had to be modified a bit…..own area however I’m happy to be able to say we are again following our traditional route. Tho this is a Saskatoon Police Service/RCMP Traffic Services escorted event….for many of the years past, members of our local Amateur Radio Community, along with members of the Prostate Cancer Survivors/Support Group have assisted us along our parade route by placing and manning traffic barricades for the duration of our parade of pledge earners on motorcycles. As many of you who have helped us out in the past know, as VE5 VS, I will endeavor to communicate with you at the different traffic barricades along the route to let you know when to position your barricades. That assistance at those intersections typically lasts less than 45 minutes, and provides a HUGE safety margin for our riders by helping to prevent pedestrians, and other vehicles from interfering in a hazardous manner with our parade. If you are interested in volunteering to assist us, please drop me an email. I will be organizing the different intersections next week, and will send you out specific instructions for the intersection that you’ll be placed. We so much appreciate your support. Thank You All in Advance Vince Streukens VE5 VS Ride Captain Saskatoon Motorcycle Ride for Dad streukensv@... ReplyForward Add reaction

What FM simplex and repeaters do you put in all your radios? I have a very long list of Saskatchewan repeaters, but here in Saskatoon only 3 seem to be active. Also I have no simplex frequencies in my list as my very slow scanner has never found one that's ever used. So, the programmed Saskatoon frequencies in my radio are. 146.640 repeater (VE5SK) FM 146.970 repeater (VE5SK) FM IRLP 449.975 very active repeater (VE5RNP) FM Fusion IRLP As for simplex I have added 146.520 but I have never heard anyone on it, (Altho I only listen at night) So if you have some frequencies to add that you know are active, or even just monitored let me/us know.

Saskatoon Fireworks Festival 2023
Hello All The Saskatoon Fireworks Festival has requested SaDARA provide communications for the Fireworks Festival Sept 1&2 (Friday and Saturday). It will be a similar setup as we had for the Canada Fireworks. We need nine volunteers for each night from 7:00pm and till 10:00pm. I will be the main contact for our group. Please let us know which night(s) you can help if you can by email to ronslind@... Thanks Ron VE5RS Additional Information: Members of the Saskatoon and District Amateur Radio Association will provide radio communications for the hot zone area ahead of, during, and after the fireworks with a role to deal with issues and escalate to police if necessary. Radio operators will be of the age of 16 years or older. We will be communicating on 146.52 simplex. Our purpose is to communicate things i.e., if someone needs first aid, or if someone needs directions, or someone is entering hot zone that is not supposed to. ? ? Radio operators will work with assigned commissionaires and volunteers. ? ? Hot Zone closes at 7 PM each using the 225m circle on the map as the minimum perimeter. Volunteer security and commissionaires close the fencing and encourage people to leave the area starting at 7 PM. ? ? All clear checks occur between 9 PM and 9:30 PM - 1st check - 9:20; 2nd check - 9:30 or as determined by the Fireworks Director and the EMO team. Why does our club participate? Our club has expressed interest in emergency communications, and we have opportunities to provide communications for Canada Day fireworks festival and the Sask. marathon. this raises the profile of the club and helps us with our goal of being an emergency communication provider. What to bring Water, mosquito spray, munchies, light jacket, flashlight, cell phone and your 2-meter radio. Other items that might be useful are a lawn chair. And maybe an umbrella. This is a fun event and raises $500 for the club.

SADARA Field day - after action observations
2
One person’s observations.. 1. Field day was a success 2. Food was great 3. Site was good 4. Member participation needs improvement 5. All power supplies worked 6. All stations on site functioned as “ club stations” using VE5AA call sign and open for other operators Lessons learned: 1. Antenna systems and kit need testing BEFORE field day deployment (note to self!!!!) 2. Biffy could be placed closer to site supplier’s truck got stuck but there are some pallets in the tree line which could be used for Platform for the biffy. Also need wash station. 3. Worked well having all antennas to the East of the site, and parking restrictions . consider slopers/vees for next year? 4. Need to organize operators schedule …… and recruit more. 5. More formal structure well in advance – appoint a leader for field day and support staff. Ask people (one on one)rather than wait for Volunteers. John Bradley VE5MU

Hi All, I brought two long orange power cords to FD. These were used to connect the generators to the stations. Does anyone recall where these ended up? 73, Dave ve5uo

Field Day Site Prep and Setup
24
Hi all, There are still a few things to resolve for Field Day in terms of site preparation and timing. I suspect that there will be a group of us visiting the the site on Thursday and/or Friday evening, with setup starting on Saturday morning. The purpose of the Thursday/Friday site visit is to clear space for the shelter(s), food prep, and gathering areas, and to at least set up the operating shelter. The timing for this site prep has yet to be determine. Please let me know if you hare available for this, and if you have a preference for timing. I'd like to propose that all who will be involved with setup to be at the Field Day site at 9:00 AM on Saturday. Please let me know your thoughts on this plan. 73, Dave VE5UO

Apparently allowing any member to post wasn't enough because further in the settings I found new members are automatically set to moderate and that goes against this groups purpose. Members are now able to post and respond without admin interference.
