Thank you for the recommendation. Since another USB-based charger would never go unused in this house, I got that RAV one, plus a few USB A-to-C cables. I may do the rings thing later, but this sounds like a far better solution anyway.

Also larger brick style USB switching power supplies tend to have better filtering than the small cubes.? I had noise on a small cube power supply and changed to a larger brick style power supply and it was perfectly quiet.? Ive used this one on VHF Shari and its 100% quiet.

If you want to use a cube power supply and try to quiet it down, you can also order ferrite rings from Amazon.? I put two of these on the USB cable closest to the cube power supply and it cut out 95% of the power supply noise.

Hope this helps.

LM386 is a very versatile chip. Bet you didn't know this! Here's a write-up to convert a LM386 chip into a regen receiver (AM-CW-SSB) that is good to 8mhz.. from EDN magazine. If you want to experiment during lock down..

Re: Adding RTC / enable i2c on SHARI ?

Thanks everyone for the link / howto / tips!
RTC is working great.

The scenario (why I wanted a RTC) is due to my SHARI being a "portable" node via a battery pack and my cell hotspot.
It isn't always connected to the hotspot, so it may be days/weeks before it sees the internet.

I agree a RTC isn't "necessary" but one less thing I have to worry about and a fun add-on.

Thanks again...

Re: Adding RTC / enable i2c on SHARI ?

Darrell,
Good point.? For me, the SHARI/RPi are only a hotspot and with no Internet it would do nothing but blink at me.? In the case of a repeater controller, it would still be functioning locally without the internet and would need the correct time.
Now I understand.? Luckily it is easy to incorporate an RTC into a RPi and instructions have been posted.
Thanks,

Tony, i said the same thing many times. Then our repeater internet went out. The hourly clock was wrong for a few days. It would have been nice to having a working RTC.

?Neil,
I am not arguing against it but why add an RTC to an AllStar node?? It has to be connected to the Internet to work and the Linux OS keeps the time update via NTP.
Am I missing something?? I'm pretty new to AllstarLink.

Re: Added a Receive Audio Output Jack

Thanks, Larry.
Perfect little amps for a monitoring speaker.? Crazy that I've been building electronics for 40 years and one of the first circuits I ever built was an LM386 audio amplifier.? Some things have some serious longevity.? Another being the 555 timer.
Great ideas!

Re: Added a Receive Audio Output Jack

Some Ideas to complete your modification.....
LM386 audio amp kit-

or assembled-

Miniature version assembled, may fit inside the Shari.

Got prime?

I'd use this speaker so you have external volume control at speaker......

Then there is this, to impress your ham club buddies at show and tell..

Adding RTC / enable i2c on SHARI ?

Hello to the group. I just completed my SHARI build and THANKS for the excellent construction tips!
Worked first time.
Now, how to add a RTC ?
I bought a RTC module with battery on Amazon and have used them several times on other RPi projects with success (enable i2C on stretch).
However, I'm running ASL Arch according to the version screen and I have no raspi-config!
Any ideas / procedures? Google procedures to install raspi-config are getting me nowhere.

With the module installed, I still get no RTC found with hwclock command.

Thanks in advance,
Neil

Great idea!? I'm going to add this my SHARI so I don't have to leave a radio on while monitoring.

Hi,
New to the group, to SHARI and to Allstar nodes.
I bought the Pi4V in kit form and am very happy.? I assembled it in 15 minutes, configured it in 5 minutes and it (almost) worked first try.? When I keyed the mic, COS LED would stay on for 5 minutes until timing out.? I remembered seeing an option to invert the COR line so I went after that - fixed.? Maybe I missed something in the instructions or maybe I am a bit dim.
I thought that I'd mention this fix in case someone else finds this behavior with a new node.?
I used the latest hamvoip image on a Pi3B. (the USB arrangement didn't matter Pi3 vs. Pi4 because I used 2 x 6" USB extensions to put the SHARI on top of the Pi)
So 40 minutes from opening to box to complete functionality.? Great fun.? Thank you to N8AR for a nice design and a fun kit

Re: Voice vs. CW

If I'm on the road, I just call into my home Allstar node by Echolink.? The connections can all be managed in Supermon through a web browser from outside my home (with the right port-forwarding enabled).? I am an iPhone user, and gave up trying to use my Allstar portable through the phone's data connection.

Echolink audio isn't as good as Allstar, but otherwise it works great!

Re: New to group

Thanks Mike , waiting on the email for the paypal invoice,? will let you know when it comes in.
