Donation
I am very happy to inform the Board that the Alabama Firefighters Personnel Standards and Education Commission at the Fire College voted today to give an annual $10,000.00 donation to our S.A.F.E.R. Fund. This donation will extend their mission of training firefighters in the state to supporting our mission of support to the same firefighters in their time of need. I want to say a huge THANK YOU to Commissioner Allan Rice for bringing this matter to the whole commission. I truly appreciate the support that they are giving to our Fund. On another note and just as important, we also received within the last week a $1,000.00 donation from the Sumpter Co. Volunteer Association. This is the second year that they have voted to support our program. I also want to take this time to wish you all a glorious Easter weekend. SP

I received a phone call from Reid Vaughan this morning notifying me that a volunteer fire chief at Mount Olive VFD in Tuscaloosa Co.,Greg Robertson, home burned to the ground last night. He and family are safe but they lost everything. Reid has cut a $1,000.00 check as the automatic benefits allow and the check will be gotten to him this weekend. SP

Good afternoon. I hope everyone is well. On Tuesday of this week Grace McCluskey, a volunteer firefighter/EMT with Center Star Fire in Lauderdale County, stopped at what she thought was a vehicle accident to render aid that might be needed. It turned out to be the aftermath of a police chase of a robbery suspect. Things escalated quickly and before Grace could get out of her vehicle the suspect began firing his weapon hitting Grace in the shoulder and also wounding a police officer. Having spoke with the Board officers on Wednesday, we determined that Grace was acting in accordance with being a volunteer FF and her injury makes her eligible for the automatic benefit for a service related injury. After speaking with the department chief i asked him to have her contact me when she was able to do so. I spoke with her and her husband earlier this morning and learned she may require surgery to remove shrapnel that is in her shoulder and neck near her T2 area. She has been told to not return to work for 6 weeks as of now. She is a new employee so she does not have much leave time built up. I have asked our S/T to issue a check for $2,000.00, which is the benefit listed, for the first month of being off work. We will be monitoring the situation for any needed assistance for the second month. We will keep you all updated on things as time progresses. Thank you, Steve Pegues

February SAFER statement
Good morning. I hope this finds everyone well. Attached is the February bank statement. You will see that we received three deposits that total $2,850.00. The largest deposit of 2,500.00 came for the Alabama First Responders Benefits Program. This is the second contribution from this organization. The other two donations I do not have names on. You will also see where we send two assistance checks. One check was sent to an incorrect mailing address that was provided to us. We needed to stop payment on that check since it was not returned to us. The stop payment charge was deducted from the assistance that was approved and a new check issued. I am working with Daryl Perkins on some fund raising letters and will also be setting up a meeting with Rick Oates, the State Forester, to look at some possible fund raising efforts that they can assist us with. I will keep you all posted on these efforts as they progress. SP

Request for assistance 6
A Birmingham FF was involved in a vehicle accident on Wednesday while he was riding his motorcycle he was hit by a car. He was flown to UAB and had to have surgery on his hip yesterday and his ankle today. He seems to be stable with other injuries. After speaking with his brother, who is also a Birmingham FF, he will be in the hospital a few days then be sent to a rehab facility. The estimated time spent in both facilities is two weeks. After speaking with Reid and LaQuenta I am proposing $1,000.00 to assist him and family while he is in these two facilities. There are some other accident policies and fund raising efforts underway that will kick in later. Please respond by email you position on this request for assistance. Thanks, Steve Pegues

Request for assistance 7
Good afternoon. I received an email from our S/T Reid Vaughan this morning regarding the need for some assistance from our fund. Cory Strickland, 36 years old, has been an active volunteer firefighter with the Siloam VFD. His full time job was that of a truck driver. He began the program to get his certification and I’m that principals the required NFPA 1582 physical. He had been feeling well for some time and three weeks ago had to be flown to UAB where they discovered he is in renal failure. He has been in the hospital ever since. Having not been able to work he has not received a paycheck in a while. His wife has had to leave work to take care of their kids. There is a request for $1,000.00 assistance from the S.A.F.E.R. Fund to help them with bills and supporting the children. There are some other efforts underway to provide some help but those efforts will take some time to evolve. Please respond by email your wish on this request. Thank you, SP

Volunteer Firefighter
Good evening. I wanted to give you all some information regarding a check that is being issued from our Fund. Early Tuesday morning the Pinckard Volunteer Fire Department, in Dale County, responded to a house fire call. Upon arrival they realized that the home was where one of their firefighters lived. During suppression operations the body of Caleb Green was found deceased in his bed. He was 37 years old. He was a full time employee of the City of Dothan. After several discussions with S.A.F.E.R. Fund Officers and conversations with others, the Fund will be mailing a check for $1,000.00 to Caleb's mother. This is the benefit that is paid when someone’s primary residence is lost due to fire or a weather related issue. This will help his family with the handling of his burial until other insurance can be paid. The check will be mailed this week. Although we all hate that situations like this occur where assistance is needed I am very happy to be a part of an organization that is able to provide some immediate assistance to any firefighter or their family when the need arises. I hope you all have a good rest of the week. Steve Pegues

November statement
Good afternoon. I hope all have had a good holiday weekend. Attached is the November bank statement for SAFER. You will notice a few deposits. Back in November I posted on my personal FB page that anyone who would like to help Jamal Jones with Birmingham Fire, who was shot last year, with a donation through our program for Christmas they could do so and all donations earmarked for him would go to him. There are two small donations made through the Venmo account for him, another was made but it has not hit the account yet and the 2500.00 deposit has $1,000.00 earmarked for his family. The other 1,500.00 from that donation will stay in our account. If you know of anyone who might like to assist his family they can do so through the website or mail a check. We plan on getting the funds to them around the 16th of this month. There is another $5,000.00 contribution from the City of Oxford. We greatly appreciate their support for our program. We will set another board meeting for sometime in January or February of next year. We will notify you when that date has been chosen. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. Thanks, SP
