If you have the old belts, you can start with measuring them. ?Broken belts after being cleaned can be glued end to end with super glue to help make the measurement. ?What you want is to measure the diameter (round) or side (square) belt and it length stretched. ?You measure the length with about a 1/4” spacing between the two belt side. ?Typically there was a tool that mad these measurements for you but I do not know where to find them today. ?I have not looked. ?Anyway with the length and diameter, you should be able to find a replacement belt.

The eject issue is the belt hardened into its normal resting position. Replacing the belt fixes it . . .

I just grabbed another D102 on Ebay. Perfect working display. Only issue is "Sometimes it won't eject"...No biggie. It is a earlier model with no digital out....oh well. Maybe I can swap everything literally and get a perfect digital unit? We will see in a week. I WISH you could recall the display mod you mentioned about the 10 ohm 1 watt resistor!

Thanks much.

Re: SAE D102 Display Completely dead

I tore the D102 apart tonight. I looked at the display module. I resoldered many joints. No work. The module covers all that isn't working, but again, as you are aware, all the functions work great. This must be a later model, for I am running coaxial digital out into a outboard A/D converter.
The impossible search is on.

Re: SAE D102 Display Completely dead

Again, the Repeat LED and Index LEDs don't light. I doubt they are part the said Display module. Almost like the pcb isn't getting power. Haven't torn it apart yet.

FWIW, I have two C-101 Cassette Decks, that needed both belts and idler tires. I found that the transports are either Matsushita (w/Mitsubishi motors) or Mitsubishi. The one resource that might be the easiest is Pacific Stereo, a spin-off of the defunct So. Calif. audio retail chain that's now a parts/info resource. You can also send your old belts, and complete idler wheels (without removing tires) to Russel Industries to be eye/hand matched.

If you really strike out, you can take your idler wheels w/tires to a seal/O-ring supply house for matching; however, you may have to buy a minimum quantity of 25 or so @ 5-10 cents each. That's cheap, if you factor in what your time is worth, not to mention shipping and/or fuel driving around to hopefully find what you need.

Re: SAE D102 Display Completely dead

Thanks. I had read somewhere it is the display driver IC that fails, and according to the service manual the hex inverter driver IC is a LS7404 which can still be found. Guess I will pull the front panel, remove the PCB and look around. Believe I read somewhere on another piece of their gear they over drove the display, and resistor values were changed from 180 to 270 ohms.
Doubt I will find a burned trace....be lucky. If I happen to a resistor certainly go across it. And yes, the rest of the unit works fine. I did notice the "Repeat" light does not work in the display. Nothing does.

Thanks again.

David

Joe, if you could post a picture, or sent it to me in an email, I think I can help you out. I worked on a ton of cassette decks from that era, and it’s likely SAE used a mechanism that was also used by other manufacturers.

Re: SAE D102 Display Completely dead

Do you have any info or photos of the display, board and board modifications? ?Those displays were made by someone and likely were a “standard” part with others likely to have same or similar pinout and function but not necessarily the same digit size or shape.

Tracking down said module may not be easy after all this time but with the internet, who knows?

If there is an SAE manual or parts list, maybe they did not use an internal part number?

The display module had a tendency to burn itself up over time, losing one and eventually all digit segments. I bought a pristine D-102 (second version w/digital output) dirt cheap on eBay with a dead display. This was back in the early 90s when DAK owned SAE, and I was able to get display module with a modification bulletin from their last remaining stock. I remember opening a circuit trace, drilling two holes, and soldering a 10 ohm 1W resistor connecting the two ends of the opened trace. SAE/DAK's parts manager at the time, Gail, told me I called just in time as there were only a few modules left. I'd be willing to say there are alotta perfectly functioning D-102s with dead displays out there, with no hope of their displays ever working again. Sorry that I don't have better news to share.

I just bought one, NO display they said. I don't have it yet. I have read the driver chip for the display is the likely cause. Could this be a power supply issue? Again, I have no idea yet what it will or will not due. I know there 2 fuses in the PS, one is a 1/4 amp. The other bigger. I don't recall. I downloaded the service manual.. I am aware segments are known to go out these, but the whole thing? Any input would be nice. It's the piece in my rack I need. It even has 2 A502 amps I run in mono. Thanks, David
