James Bongiorno - RIP

It was a cold and dreary day in January of 2013, when I was notified that James Bongiorno had passed away. That day the Audio Industry lost a pioneer who contributed much to the ever growing technology of Audio. Not only did the Audio Industry loose this pioneer, but I lost a friend and mentor. The many things he taught me still remain in my mind and are useful to this day. I miss the conversations, in his unique manner of discussion, about many things other than Audio. He will always have a place in my heart for as long as I am alive. Perhaps James is designing Audio in his new environment, but in any case I hope your Resting in peace.? Mark

I replaced u6 not u8. u6 is closest to the jacks and it's the first chip to receive input.

\
To all Yahoo Group Email access users:\
\
Members are responsible for managing their own email. If your going to go away for any long period of time, it is recommended you go to your Yahoo Groups account and change ALL OF YOUR access/reading to "No Emial" status for all the Yahoo groups you belong to. Upon your return, just set them back to the way they were before. The obvious downside of this is you miss all the messages on the groups while you are away.\
\
See the "No Email Procedure" below / bottom.\
\
If you fail to make these changes when you go on a long trip, your personal email account used to receive Yahoo groups email will become full, emails will bounce and your Yahoo account will automatically be suspended (not removed or deleted). What this means is that Yahoo groups as a whole will simply stop sending any emails to your email address. You will have to go through yahoo's email reactivation procedure to get things going again after you get done unclogging your email account. If this happens, do not bother the Moderators to fix this for you for we do not have that level of access to your account.\
\
Bottom Line: Members must do their part as part of the Yahoo Groups community and manage their own Email accounts properly. Moderators are not going to access member accounts and make the changes for you. Moderators (and co-moderators) are Volunteers with limited time and spend it all behind the scenes making sure the list is SPAM free as much as possible. They are the unsung Heroes in my book.\

\
2) Below "MyGroups", Click on "Edit My Groups" just to the right of "View Groups"\
\
3) For each group shown, go to the far right under under "Message Delivery" column to the bar which show your current setting.\
\
4) Click-hold on the bar and a list will pop up. \
\
5) Chose the option "No Email" and release. This was also known as "Web Only" option which simply means you go to the Yahoo groups website and read the messages.\
\
6) Repeat process of all other Group accounts.\

Revised 6/17/04 Mark Gurries

======== LIST RULES ==========
This list has a set of rules governing the discussion topics so that we maintain the focus of the group.

LIMITED SALES OF ANY PRODUCT OR MERCHANDISE INCLUDING SAE STUFF

1) No UNSOLICITED direct offers of "FOR SALE" items allowed on this SAE-TALK list. This list is not an EBAY or Audiogon. Only in rare, special cases are sales allowed upon the PRIOR discretionary approval of the Moderator. It better be very special!!! Everyday SAE stuff sold on EBAY is not special.

2) If one wishes to SELL something IN RESPONSE to a request "I'm looking for", do the actual sales OFF this list.

3) We can talk about items posted for sale in a public forum (EBAY/AUDIOGON) as long as it is related to Q&A in the spirit of this list function (production history, design, modifications, cost history, possible problems with the products and technical stuff).

If this stuff gets out of hand, sales of any kind will be banned.

REPAIR SERVICES
Offers to do repair services or are allowed. However, all offers must be in direct RESPONSE to a request like "I'm looking for someone to repair...". Final discussions for actual work must be made OFF list. No SOLICITATION or independent advertisements allowed on the list. Repair Shops may post DIRECT weblinks to their place of business in the LINKS folder of this list website. If this stuff gets out of hand, it will be banned.

POSTING OF TECHNICAL INFORMATION
Offers to supply technical information or documentation are allowed. However, all offers must be in direct RESPONSE to a request like "I'm looking for someone who has a schematic too...". Final discussions for actual transfer of information must be made OFF list. No SOLICITED or independent advertisements allowed on the list. Unfortunately there is not enough disk space on the Yahoo list website to store all the technical information about Audio products we talk about. However, everyone is encouraged to post WEBLINKS to show where one can get documentation and information. This can include places that sell documentation. Weblinks are to be placed in the LINKs area of this list website.

USAGE OF THE FILES AREA
There are many folders containing information in the Files area. However space is VERY limited. At this time, people must obtain permission from a list moderator to post files in this area. We are trying to store information that is not publicly available or is very rare.

USAGE OF THE PHOTO AREA.
If you have some pictures of equipment you would like to post, this is the place to do it. However, space for these photos is shared with all the other files of this list. Keep the photo images small and compressed. Keep them to about 40K each. Moderators reserve the right to remove photos at any time as needed to manage the website disk space.

MESSAGE CONDUCT
Everyone must respect each other on this list. ANYONE with direct personal derogatory comments about another person in terms of them being a human being is not allowed. Technical debates, however heated, must not use foul language. Repeated offenses (they are accumulative) can lead to banning from the list. THE 10 Commandments of Email:

Thou shalt include a clear and specific subject line.

Thou shalt edit any quoted text down to the minimum thou needest.

Thou shalt read thine own message thrice before thou sendest it.

Thou shalt ponder how thy recipient might react to thy message.

Thou shalt check thy spelling and thy grammar.

Thou shalt not curse, flame, spam or USE ALL CAPS.

Thou shalt not forward any chain letter.

Thou shalt not use e-mail for any illegal or unethical purpose.

Thou shalt not rely on the privacy of e-mail, especially from work.

When in doubt, save thy message overnight and reread it in the light of
the dawn.

And, here's the "Golden Rule" of E-Mail:

That which thou findest hateful to receive, sendest thou not unto
others.

Re: sae 5000 repair

for another update I replaced u8 thats the 4136 chip closest to the audio jacks that was giving the scope explosions and the unit now is working properly but now I need to work on the audio jacks. The old ones were broken so I put in some others but it tore the circuit board traces up somewhat getting the old jacks unsoldered so I need to figure something different, but at least the unit is working.

P101 Relays and Caps

I'm trying to work out the wrinkles with my p101 premap.? It has been sitting, and the sound was distorted.? I cleaned all of the relays, and initially there was still some noise, but gradually things improved.? Now, all I have is a little noise on the stereo reverb switch, which goes away if I leave it selected.?

This leaves me wondering.? Could the improvement over time be an issue with capacitors and not relays?

Re: Rack Handles

I have some for a 2400 but then your 2400 will be missing handles. :)

Re: sae 5000 repair

the sd214 is the one I couldn't figure out on the schematic it's sae numbers I guess for those. I tried searching the actual numbers on the components and I also tried d214 with no luck so that one may be of help. I don't know if they are bad but I did run accross a forum entry where the poster stated he had a bad one, but the thread ends at that point. Thanks again.

Re: sae 5000 repair

Thanks Rick, only one of those SAE #s is on the handy dandy SAE cross reference chart. The "S" is missing on the schematic for the SD214. That was the only one I couldn't find, I'll look again now that I have the complete number.

Craig

Re: sae 5000 repair

Hi, here is some info on the parts used in the 5000, SAE#11-0165 are RC4136 quad opamps, (U4,U5,U6,U7,U8) on schematic, SAE#11-0164 are LM339 comparators, (U1,U2,U3) on schematic, SAE#11-024 is a 2N5636 N- channel FET, Q3 on schematic, SAE#11-0166 are SD214 N-channel DMOS FET , Q5,Q6 on schematic, all parts available.

I currently have a sae 5000 and 2 sae 5000a's. one 5000a works properly one 5000a works properly on one channel but the other channel passes no sound when in the processing mode and the 5000 passes sound in the processing mode but does not remove the clicks. Also on that there seems to be a faint high pitched tone in one channel. I have an oscilloscope and I went thru the working unit probing each I.C. and making note of what I get. For a signal I just put a mp3 of a sine wave with a simulated record skip on it so the working unit is trying to remove that skip, I can here the skip attempting to be removed with the invert button. I have probed the 5000 unit and I see discrepancies in my scope waveforms but my problem is I'm stuck at that point. The pc board isn't labeled the ic's as u1,u2,etc they just label 3 ic's with the sae part number and the other 5 with their sae part number, so my next step was going to be try to figure out what ic's are what by just following the board traces from each pin of an ic to it's component it's connected to and see if I can figure which ic is which. I'm not good at reading that schematic but I really haven't studied it . I imagine there are people that can just look at it and almost immediately see what's going on but that's not me. I work on the old rca selectavision players but I have service manuals for them and they go into great detail on how to find the problems, so I have pretty good luck working on them, but to go at a repair like these sae 5000 A little guidance may go a long way for me.
???? I was hoping someone may have some pointers for me. If it matters, the sae 5000 looked to be set up for 220 volt operation even though there was no sticker on the back indicating that but I changed it back to 110 volt and also added an on off switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: sae 5000 repair

another update on this. I tried snipping the negative and positive voltage input pins on u6 but could only snip the positive one but I was still getting some signal with no input so I removed u6 completely and now thru out the unit I have no signal anywhere with no input except the output pins 10 and 12 on u4 show a very small signal about 20mv at one pin and up to about 70mv on the other, but I only saw that spike that high once the majority of the time it was only up to about 30mv. I'm thinking that may just be noise it's picking up from all the flourescent and led lighting I have at the workbench, but I have made note of it. So my next step is put a socket in when they arrive and then install the new chip and see what happens.
