Steering Rack mysteries

So, I thought this would be an easy day on my S1 restoration.? ?Time to mount the steering rack back on the frame.? ?My R&P has zero play, so I thought I would just change the boots, new tie rod ends for good measure, paint it and put it back on.? ?However, when I removed the boots a lot of oil came out...? ?What?? ?These things have oil in them?? ?If so, what holds it in except for the boots?? ?Anyway, the offside rack bushing, which looks like it was once some sort of nylon or plastic, is disintegrated.? ?That means more work.? ?I'm tempted to take the tie rod off, slide in a new bushing and call it a day, but the oil in the boots means I have more work to do?? ?Are there oil seals in there somewhere?? ?I can't imagine, since the rack has, you know, teeth.??
?
Anyway, I'll get on the phone with the usual suspects to see if I can get some rebuild parts.? ?Thoughts in the meantime?? ?

Shane hope all is going good. I said it before. And I'll say it again. I am retired, with a wealth bof knowledge on these S1 Esprit . But it's funny. I don't know where you are located. And while you could be a 10 minute drive from me . But If ,I don't know. What help could I be. And what help could you be. There needs to be a way for all S1 and S2 owners to know where we are and communicate. With a Phone or text directly.?

Yes, that would be useful.? ?I'm in Belmont, NC, just outside Charlotte.? ?I bought this car from Robert Walker in NY, who bought it from Art Mason.? ?Previous to that it had been sitting in a garage in Boston since 1980.? ?24,000 miles on the clock with the tartan in great shape.? ?I pulled it down to the bare frame, and now have all the suspension rebuilt.? ?Once I get the chassis done and on all 4 tires, I'll turn to the engine.? ?I'm not new to this game, but new to Lotus.

Does your car have Weber's. Just wondering. My 199h came with Weber's. It was sold from a New York dealer that put Weber's on the cars he sold. I am in Niagara Ontario. So quite a ways from you . You can Call me at 90 643 0554 I'll send you some picks of my car with text

Hi Shane,
?
Seems the resident gurus here are lately less inclined to chat so I'll step up for what it's worth. Don't be alarmed about the oil, it's how the rack is supposed to be lubricated, weird as that may seem. The disintegrated bushing must be dealt with and I expect someone in this community might know of where you'll find a replacement for purchase. Otherwise it's a matter of disassembly, which isn't too ugly, and having a machinist turn a replacement in Delrin.
?
Cheers
Steve

I have Weber 45 DCOE on my #024 JPS 152T. Rumor has it that Lotus Cars USA used my car as a test mule around Riverside Raceway. I wonder if they put them on. Maybe they couldn’t get Dellortos from the UK. I have a pair of Dellortos on the shelf that I might the Webers out for, another set for my SI that I’m rebuilding (seriously, I AM), and a spare set. It’s like a Dellorto warehouse here ?

Someone told me that the cars run very smoothly with the Strombergs, although lower on power.? ?I was going to refresh my Strombergs and give it a go.? ?Bad idea?
