Heater Blower Motors
?
The heater blower motors on my 1977 SI are burnt out. I have had no luck finding original replacements but I did find 12v motors on Amazon that I could make a mount for but they are noisy due to them being gear driven. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion of electrical motors that would be suitable (quiet) replacements. The fan needs to turn around 600 rpm as I understand it. If the diameter is below 1.75 inches then I will be able to use the old motor body as a sleeve to mount the new motor in. The motor in the picture is 1.25 inch diameter. The length of the motor body needs to be less than four inches. Hopefully the pictures will make it clear how I am mounting the motor. Any suggestions of possible quiet motors would be welcome. Thanks. |
These are mine on my Esprit S1.

That's what I did. I plugged it.? I purchased an S1 that had spent most its life in Hawaii, at a place called Kailua-Kona, which has the distinction of the highest record low in the United States, 56 degrees F. I asked its owner of 43 years, how the heater worked.? He said, "What heater? Does it have one?"
Sorry, not helpful I know.? Good luck with the repair and replacement.

Thanks for the responses to my request. I searched again on line but could not find a modern heater fan motor that was small enough to fit in the Lotus fan housing, most were 3 plus inch diameter. It did get me thinking about alternatives as I looked at the different fan assemblies. ?I remembered I had an old (1970’s) air conditioner condenser unit which had a twin cage fan set up on it. I dug it out and found that it was quiet, had three speeds and, for its small size, moved considerably more air than the Lotus unit. As you can see in the pictures I removed one of the fan units and mounted the motor/fan assembly in the same location as the factory unit. It is much quieter than the gear driven motors I have and should do the job well. |
