?
I reiterate that I'm ready, willing and able to help anyone get a photo of their S model in Model Railroader's Trackside Photos feature.? Thanks to the few guys who have already provided photos.? I used commercially available wipers, shades, horn, MU hoses, drop steps and headlights.? ?I'm working on an article on this build for Model Railroader with the purpose of showing what can be done in S with what you can buy today.? ?The caboose and hoppers in the images are also available today.? Is there as much available in S as in HO or N?? No, of course not.? Can you build nice models in S with what is available today with common modeling techniques and materials?? Absolutely!

I spent this past weekend showing off S scale (models, not a layout) at the Central Georgia RPM in Macon, GA.? Got lots of OOOHs and AAAHs... watched lots of jaws hit the floor... heard the o-so-common comments, "I had no idea S was this nice", I thought S was American Flyer", etc, etc, etc.? I have a portable layout planned, just not yet built due to lack of a place to store it and a way to transport it.
?
I am VERY happy to say that I was NOT the only S scalers with a table at this RPM!? There were two others.? FIRST time this has ever happened.? This needs to happen a LOT more!
?
The attached pics show my display table.

John,
?
Thanks for sharing this!? What a fantastic display you put together!? And I see that you had some of the NASG print material on hand, too.? I'm sure that you changed the view of S for many who stopped by!
?
The tablet with the rotating display caught my eye, too.? These can be really useful ways to scroll information and/or images.
?
In that regard, there is a Powerpoint presentation that scrolls the 34 images that have been used in the RMC ads. along with captions describing what is in each photo.? This is available to anyone who would like to use it? in a display like yours.? Contact me off line.?
?
Brooks
|
Brooks, I'm curious about how you shot the two photo's.? Did you use a hi F-Stop, or did you use a focus-stacking app?
?
|
Thanks, Brooks.? I think I have at least 300 rotating model photos on my tablet showing the things I didn't have room to bring to the show (and things I don't have).? I update that photo gallery every time I get a new model, so I'll have even more to show next year.

John,
Great to spend the weekend with you. For those who do not know, John bringing his S scale display to the Savannah RPM for years is the reason I am in S scale. Now that we have moved that RPM to Macon and rebranded as the Central Georgia RPM he has made the trip two years running.?
This was the first RPM I have displayed some of my S factory equipment as well as a couple of projects I am working on along side my HO models. I had far more questions about the S and I let everyone touch the models to see difference. The common remark was “S is the perfect scale”.?
Thanks again John for the introduction and support!

We had 6 S Scalers at the show here in Minnesota and I have been in contact with someone who now wants to dabble in S....

Michael,
?
Yes, using the smallest aperture available on whatever camera/lens you're using is one factor in getting a good depth of field (DOF). ?The two photos were taken with an old, inexpensive Fujifilm HS30EXR using the smallest aperture with some minor color and lighting enhancements in Photoshop.
?
With a properly equipped camera used properly, you can get adequate DOF in scenes of S models without the use of stacking.? Our larger models allow the camera to be further from the subject, further increasing the DOF.
?
I'd suggest that you spend some time with my "MODELERS GUIDE TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPY" which you can read and/or download here on the home page of my BC&G website:
?
chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/http://www.buffalocreekandgauley.com/HOME/A_MODELERS_GUIDE_TO_DIGITAL_PHOTOGRAPHY_June_2019.pdf
?
I'd call your attention to Section C on page 8.? This section walks through selecting all the proper settings for any camera used for model photography.? ?The GUIDE discusses both the technical and aesthetic aspects of model photography.
?
I'd be glad to discuss the subject further off line if you care to.

I have also now noted that on pg 36, in the article on the DH&N, Ken Chick states "...Rail Craft (now Micro Engineering) began offering N scale code 55 track with proper sized ties and extremely small spikes that allowed locomotives and freight cars with "pizza cutter" flanges (my emphasis) to operate smoothly."? He later mentions the effort he has made to update rolling stock to finer flanged wheelsets.
?
Not sure of the relative proportions of our S "pizza cutters to rail" versus what the N guys deal with in their same "pizza cutters to rail" comparison but as many here have mentioned, all scales seem to deal with some of the same issues.? Whether it's 220 wheels to 172 track or 172 wheels to 148/138/125 track or 110 wheels to 100/83/70 track, "upgrading" wheels to finer track seems to be a somewhat common effort for those that desire that level of finesse.
?
I realize that I am a hi-rail guy "listening in" to a more proto space and appreciate the wealth of knowledge that can be gained here to hopefully advance my own level of skill(s).? I find the effort that members in this group make to advance the fidelity of their modeling impressive.? And hope to learn from it.
