Re: FS: South Wind NYC Combine

That's quite a discovery Jace!? Seems that the lonely combine has often been a step child.? When they first were imported, I obtained one.? I then had the opportunity to buy an entire train of the newly painted? models.? As expected, the coaches went in a heartbeat, then the baggage.? The RPO, obs and combine took awhile. My personal roster was 'good' until I decided I needed a change which left me without a combine--I was after a short train with just a RPO, baggage and combine.? At one of the conventions, Jettie put me together with one that was lettered on one side!? So again I'm happy with my little train.? I've operated on a ATSF HO layout where a combine was standard for a mixed train, so it's an ideal situation fairly often.? And just a few years earlier, I'd be jumping on it!?

Also those trucks have some of the best rolling qualities I've experienced!?

I discovered I'd accumulated three of these, which is at least one more than I need.? Mint condition, never run.
Great for mixed trains.

S scale comments........

Lionel has several factories in China which produce products for them.? At one time, the number was at least 10+ different factories.? Lionel obtained competitive bids for production from various factories in their attempts to keep the numbers reasonable.? I do not know how many factories Lionel uses these days.? I am quite sure Lionel did not own these factories but had exclusive use of their capabilities.
?
I really appreciate Pieter's thinking outside the box regarding S scale not becoming a major scale.? As two old-tymers in S, we have both worked hard in our individual ways to accomplish that goal.? I, for one, feel it is impossible unless a big Sugar Daddy steps up to the task.? So far, I have not seen a Sugar Daddy on the horizon heading our way.?
?
Perhaps S scale marketing should emphasize that S is the best niche scale to enjoy.? Creatively making things might be an appeal to many rather than simply buying things.? (Note:? "might" is not the same as "will".)? Promoting all the different ways folks could make things in S scale for themselves would be a new approach.? Perhaps it would be better to be known as the BEST NICHE SCALE rather than the long-lost? formerly-major scale?? No matter how much S advertises, the lack of products remains the biggest single obstacle to attracting those from other scales to S.?
?
Just my thoughts.? Worth what you paid for them.? Enjoy.........

Re: Dumb Curiousity

I don't know about Lionel, but I've read much of model railroading makers in China are owned by J.P. Morgan Bank.? So reusing them in China shouldn't be anything but a raising Capital problem.? Please, this is not a political statement, but a comment on bringing back wanted AF.? Please do not go to a political reply.? But if I'm wrong, I gladly accept correction.

Re: "Purchasing" the AF tooling

Bill, this was done in the 60’s by Walter Graeff of Ace Model Railroad. He agreed to purchase a “Days” run of the injection molding machine, which I think Josh Seltzer told me was 5,000 units. The AF boxcar (PRR X29) with non-opening doors and the 3 bay offset open top hopper were run. Ace then sold these unlettered shells or as kits. Seltzers purchased over a 1,000 of these shells and using Champ decals, CDS dry transfers, and any other letting they could cobble, offered RTR scale and AF compatible cards. They included assembled Ace trucks, bolsters or underframes. AF compatible couplers (I’m thinking Harry Gordon’s) or KD#5s. Josh told me the project manager had not cleared this deal with the higher ups and lost his job over it….

Re: Dumb Curiousity

I would bet that the molds/tooling?for the pieces under discussion reside in China. It’s possible that Lionel doesn’t even “own” them, or that they were destroyed after the last run, although not highly probable.

A more likely approach for us would be using CAD-CAM and 3D printing to make very short run or make-on-demand models. The results would not be cheap, probably brass-model prices, but could fill the needs of existing and future S scalers (after 50 years I expect the idea of “growing” S into a major scale is one to forget). People are already making the 3D printed shells, it is more about machining the mechanism parts.

A first step might be to work with AM to design 3D printed shells and maybe frame parts to extend their line (if they are willing - but it?would mean they could focus on marketing and shipping, maybe painting and pad-printing an extended line with only mechanical parts being in inventory).?The line could then be filled out with newer models and more unusual units from the transition era.

Meanwhile someone with the skills could work on producing a mechanism or mechanisms using?the CAM technology.

BTW, Hans, any HO produced since the 1970s should run on code 70. Before that it was only a few European based companies that used the NEM standards which required code 100 track.

Yes there are potential issues, but In general there are few issues with running a mold in a different injection molding press as long as the press is properly chosen for the needs of the mold.??

Peter, you do a fabulous job of updating the NASG.org web site for all things S!? It's a wonderful portal for all who are interested in trains, farm modeling, diecast vehicles, etc. Your "news" and "product gallery" are especially comprehensive, capturing part-time makers, 3D-printed models, and many obscure niches with our hobby.

Guys, I recommend checking this great information resource from time to time. You'll find something of interest.

Thank you, Dan., I calculated that the train would be over 8 feet long! I’m searching for a place to fit it in full view. It would have to be a “helicopter” shot. Before that, I need to strip and add details to my two C&NW F units before painting them in red and gray. Might take some time at my current snail’s pace.

Posting Only On Facebook

It appears that the "S-scale" group on Facebook has now also locked their group to be "private" only. The full list of S-related Facebook groups is here (all are now "private"):

I do not "do" Facebook, so if you are only posting new product announcements or other important notices on any of the Facebook groups, note that I will not see them, and thus not be able to report on them in the NASG web site "News" section. So, I would recommend that individuals/companies either also post announcements in any of the Groups.io S-related discussion lists (I do monitor all of them), or e-mail me directly at webmaster@....

We are getting way more eyeballs on the NASG web site than there are members on any of those Facebook groups, so if you want to make an announcement that reaches a wider "S" audience, please contact me. I want to help promote your S product(s).

- Peter (as NASG webmaster)

P.S. If you know anyone who only posts on Facebook and is not on these Groups.io lists, feel free to forward this e-mail to them.
