Re: Lionel evolving

As I recall (being a long-time HO modeler until I went to O scale forty-five years ago), AF also
used the Varney hoppers and tank cars.
The High-F drive was an attempt to cut costs to bring more budget-conscious people into the scale; it was not a success, and?
they soon returned to a decent geared drive.

And a bit more useless trivia--in HO, Gilbert used the Varney F unit as their's.? I don't know if it was the entire unit or just the shell.? I think it was also mentioned that a couple of the freight cars came from other sources too.
I was always admiring Gilbert's version of the North Coast Limited.? The S version with it's PA's just didn't float!? The North Coast Limited was one of a very few passenger consists i'd ever seen 1:1

After Lionel stopped using Rivarossi, they did contract with Athearn.? And Athearn had the "Hi-F" drive for a while, and I think were the only ones that had it.? Athearn also bought the HObbyline (John English) diesel shell so some of the "Lionel" HO was a bit of a mashup.? The Virginian Rectifier that Athearn provided was interesting because it came on rather incorrect EMD Blomberg trucks from Athearn's "GP9.".

Re: Just another box car

I jest Mike, but isn't glycerine an oil? Is it water soluble?

I also watched a YouTube video that recommended using windshield washer fluid. Took me a couple of hours to disassemble the airbrush and clean out the solidified acrylic...but I'm still having fun.

Hello Rance!
?
Thank you for thinking of my situation.

At this point, it is a bit early for me to start considering heavy investments into my S Hi Rail idea, so I would not be
purchasing "en masse" for some time.
?
What I may do at some point in the next year or so, is purchase a target AF engine,?some sticks of?track from suppliers for samples and possibly a switch from each.
?
Thereon I would like to see how well an AF/Gilbert 0-8-0 can be made to run.
?
I expect I amd going to?be pariticipating more in the S scale forum over at OGR (where Hi Rail is more accepted and in the majority). It will be there I am going to ask/learn about the possibility of?adapting AF/Gilber engines?to pure DC. My thinking would be, that if they can be adapted to pure DC, then I would like?to experiement?putting sound/DCC therein. IF that's practical, it would be intention to convert the small amount of AF/Gilbert engines I may have in the future so that I could?enjoy them via?one of my NCE systems. (I have two NCE/RC systems, one out in the layout building and one here in this computer room.)
?
So,?very soon I will be taking my S Hi Rail disccussions over the OGR so as not to become more tedious to those here.

If Ken can't find his I think I might have two of them.? And these are "special", as Jettie sent them to me as photo samples as these were the first castings that were made. ?? I inquired if I could just keep them, but no, he wanted the money, so I paid but I also never had a real need!? So these are rare collector items, assuming I can find them!?

Often times clients find it easier/cheaper in several ways to just write off these minor items.? And this dumpster diver is certified in that practice!

Re: The Death Of S Scale — a Different POV

Hello Dick.
?
I suspect that you're looking at S scale too much and projecting it's situation onto model railroading in general.
?
Almost 3 weeks ago there was a train meet/show in New England that is referred to as?the "Amherst Show". From the reports that ran in one of the MRH (Model Railroad Hobbyist) forums indicates it was the best attended show in years. Basically at times during the 2 day show?it was shoulder to shoulder (and the one posting was fussing because of the crowded conditions, this is myoptic view, IMHO)
?
Further, within the "Railroad Prototype Modelers" meets, there is beginning to be?significant presense of younger modelers coming into the hobby.
?
The segments that are hurting are those of the "traditional/nostalgic" type modeling that have depended on the Baby Boomers as their market for new products. Specifically, S scale and 3 rail. As we Baby Boomers pass on, we're not being replaced fast enough for S scale and 3-rail to?make gains. The mfg'ers see this demographic, thus Lionel taking steps to try to make inroads in the huge HO market that still exists. Scale Trains indicates they are going to try to make a go in S scale, but IMHO they will have an severe uphill struggle.
SO, yes, if you look at what is happening within S or even 3-rail, the future?looks bleak. However, if you look at the greater picture, model railroading is actually enjoying a resurgence.
?
Model railroading is going to?exist in some form for our (the members of this list) emaining lifetimes.?
?
The good news in this for me, is that should I end up in S Hi-Rail some years from now, it will be a buyers market because of the glut of product that is (or will be hitting hitting the market, and will continue to hit, as Boomers pass or sell off.
