beautiful Diesels. One question (don't want to open a seperate thread for this): Did you ever design a 3D printed part to close the pilot section of an AM RS11 as you did with AM's Trainmaster? My Trainmaster shall arrive the next few days, I shall order the Shapeways parts you made in the next days. If there is also some Improvement for my RS11 I'll order this also.

Scale Trains.com, Inc. that has taken over the SHS line that MTH took over from them, also provides scale trucks and couplers in their cartons. Their cartons proudly display the name “S-Helper Service”! A nice little touch is that inside each shipping carton there are a couple of candy mints!!

ScaleTrains.com is really big in HO and N – you should check out their website. Their initial freight cars and now wide vision cabooses are nice models. Hopefully, they will eventually expand their line in S – and maybe even offer a locomotive or two? That may take a while.

Also Hans, as far as 1/64 model cars from the 50’s and 60’s, be sure to check out “M2 Machines.”? Over the years I must have bought at least 100 of these models as I found them available. You’re right that many offerings that can be found now are more modern and/or muscle cars. You may need to take a look on eBay. Also go to ? . Diecast Direct seems to offer quite a few M2 cars, as well.

SHS cars (there are many of them out there mint in box) come with additional scale wheels in a little bag that also contains truck plates. Those replace the ones that are part of the AF couplers. Without those distance pieces the car will ride too low above the tracks. Kadee couplers you have to buy seperately but you find sockets with pre-drilled holes at the bottom of the cars.?
Older AM cars are a bit different. The socket fits the elder standard for Kadee #5 (just one screwhole). If you use Kadee #802/808 you will have to drill additional holes. A few of my used cars have hirail wheels. I shall buy NWSL wheelsets for them but as long as my only trackwork is S-Trax I'm in no hurry at all.
Addendum: Not long ago I ordered a set of sergent couplers and shall report about their functionality when they arrive from China. To convert the whole fleet would be still doable but expensive yet. So I will experiment a bit...

No Chris,? I would guess that actually most past KITS could be put together either way.? Many past hi-rail builders just left off the pieces that weren't necessory. (sometimes also interfered).

With RTR, SHS, S Scale America and AM either included parts for either version or offered them as options.? In the past we had a club member who had me convert some Drake brass scale cars to run on hi-rail track.? I think only the brake hose/air hose had to come off those guys.? At the time we used Downs Ace trucks and some tongue like thing to fasten the AF coupler--a fairly easy process--no longer made but I bet there's around.

I'm certain you can find articles on ways to modify most cars either way all in the NASG website--some going back to the S Gauge Herald in the mid 60's.

Vintage cars in 1/64

 

Hello to all. When I watch videos about S scale layouts I see some beautiful model cars crowding the streets. A search in the bay will get me not that many results when looking for classics of the 1950ies and 60ies. I was scanning the portfolios of Greenlight and Johnny Lightning but it seems there are much more Muscle Cars from the Seventies then Oldies from the Golden Era after WW II. Am I missing something? Or am I just too late and a lot of what I look for is just out of print yet?
The last car I got was a Mercury from the early Fifties in Canary Yellow, by the way...

To illustrate definitively that Omnicon produced F unit drives, here is the schematic from the instruction sheets (I'd tried to scan it but the orange paper wouldn't work).? Essentially all NWSL components except the lost-wax sideframes; I didn't check it out against the drive in my Omnicon Shark, but I'd suspect they are very close if not identical design.? The ad says he used South Wind (now BTS) castings.

Most folks either don't remember or know that River Raisin was a partnership between Dan Navarre and myself from inception in 1987, until I left the partnership at the end of 2007.? By then I was a corporate nomad, living 3 states away so maintaining things was too complicated.? I still number Dan Navarre as one of my absolute best friends, in or out of model railroading.

OMI did the F3 and F7 models, we may have sold some but had nothing to do with the project.? In 1991 we made the FT sets and they had the new or (I prefer) updated drive.? We also made a short run, 50 pieces, of F3/F7 'B' units because people wanted more 'B' units!? At the same time we made 100 redrive kits so existing F3/F7 units would run quieter and match speeds with the FT's.? Everything was delivered in December 1991.? I think Dan posted an all time list of River Raisin projects, versions and dates, on the NASG website when he closed the business.? Somehow everyone loves the website but most people don't go there first for their information!?

Jace:? NASG Dispatch Magazine? 2016 #1 authored by Andy Mallette. Listed as an F7 by Omnicon which is NOT correct in a search for this article on the NASG website.? As far as I know Omnicon NEVER made an F7 just Overland right at the same time RRM was entering the fold. I think Dan Navarre finished that project from Tom Marsh for us all in S Scale. Dan I know through RRM released the? ? Re-drive kits to cure the issues but they also shared the driveshaft length issue in the gear boxes as I recall. It has been a while sorry for my cobwebs and Thanks to Colin for his reminder that that article appeared in the NASG Dispatch or Despatch magazine. Spelling D X spatch depended on who the editor was at the time.
I'll see if I can find that issue - I had it at one time when I rebuilt mine. Andy's advice was about spot on. I just found it easier to use a Teflon plastic transistor insulator the correct diameter instead of having to cut out the circular plastic washers in plastic as Andy describes.

This is a really nice looking model. I can't justify one ever showing up on the branch-line that I model but I'm tempted to get one. Many thanks to Pre-Size for getting these out there.

While on a trip to visit family back in Feb 2005, I came across a string of 3 of these prototype cars (HWCX #82, HWCX #95, and one unknown #) in the "yard" in Hugoton, KS (Cimarron Valley RR (Ex-ATSF branch)). They were a new car type to me at the time so I took a couple of pic's for future reference. I was told then that the lading was off-loaded to trucks at this point for delivery to the field.

Anyway, the purpose here is to post a pic of one of these cars as they looked "in-use". This could be very helpful if anybody is interested in properly weathering this type car.?

Not sure Ben, never measured them.? I use 0.015" rod for railings and hand grabs, it fits the eyebolts nicely.? I would imagine you could use up to 0.020", but doubt much larger would go through.

Jim: Thank you for correcting my errant comments about the OMI and RRM models and drives. This refreshed my memory and removed some of the cob webs. I was just trying to help-Jace if he wanted to rebuild his original OMI drives as Andy Malette and I both did, I really appreciated Andy having documented how to fix the? original RRM drives as? I found it VERY helpful. As I recall I was almost done with my first rebuild when I found Andy's article and found it confirmed the exact same root causes of malfunctioning that I had just discovered for myself on my first rebuild of one of the OMI F drives. Another I believe was published by Bill Winans on how to remove binding in the trucks with the 2 piece driveshafts that engage each other between the wheelsts in each truck.

Did you ask BTS if the part would be rerun?? Not sure of your application or the shape of the BTS part, a picture would have been helpful.? DPH sells EMD EyeBolts, part #SSA172.? I have used them for railing supports with good results...

Yes a super interesting car but unlike the J&L tank car, these were seen in many areas--especially around here in the smaller oil patch towns.? Halliburton was a 'sometimes' client of mine but I never was around those cars.? One could also view those tanks attached to barges, semi trucks and off -shore drilling rigs themselves.? So maybe buy some extra tanks and start drilling baby!

That's great Steve...!? Bring one to Harrisburg for me.? I'm not sure others realize that, while the cars are used a great deal for oil drilling supplies, they are basically a covered hopper with the hopper bays oriented vertically rather than horizontally.

Just to further the Omnicon drive & models just a bit!? In one of the S Manfactures' Coop Ads (one of the short lived general RR magazines ??), I photographed three painted A&B sets.? Memory says it was a C&NW, Milwaukee Road (later scheme) with the third slipping out of my memory.? I can only wonder how many were sold as it was nearing the end of Omnicon--Charlie had passed so things were happening +-!

About that time the RR SD7/9 was the new kid on the block--took a long time to wrangle one, financially.? The same thing happened when the Greenbriar GP30's and the River Raisin FT's pulled into the station--at about the same time.? Lots of good stuff there--and that power-short Great Plains Terminal RR just had to have some!
