AOTW--In defense of Welfare Mothers
I always took WM, from the first time I heard RNS, to be from the perspective of some guy we were supposed to be kinda creeped out by, the kind of guy who hangs around laundromats and such looking for divorcees, a disaffected, drunken, unemployed dude--we've all know this guy. He's a real sleaze (Moe, perhaps, back from the boardwalk? Maybe Moe's pleasure cruise--with the plenty of women, plenty of booze--never panned out so he's gone sniffin' around the laundromats?). I never took it to be Neil's own impression of women on welfare. On the Weld tour, WM sharpened the picture. On that version, the character singing the song--and I emphasize "character" as opposed to Neil--seems to me the same guy who's singing "Fucking Up." The lines in FU about "broken dishes all over the floor" and "keys left hangin' in the swingin' door" feel like the beginning of the screaming rant that rages on during the long jam of the Weld version of WM. This is a pissed off guy with little to hope for, little respect for himself or anyone else, and little self-control. WM is one of my favorite Neil songs, and it exemplifies one of my favorite Neil qualities--the ability to get inside a character's head and the courage to sing from inside of there regardless of whoever might think he's sexist, insensitive, too nationalistic, whatever. His work is full of that kind of stuff. He's the Dennis Hopper of Rock and Roll, at times like this anyway. And WM flat-out rocks, too! Nic

state of the union: let's roll
Here's the transcript from the state of the union address where he uses the term let's roll: For too long our culture has said, ``If it feels good, do it.'' Now America is embracing a new ethic and a new creed: ``Let's roll.'' In the sacrifice of soldiers, the fierce brotherhood of firefighters and the bravery and generosity of ordinary citizens, we have glimpsed what a new culture of responsibility could look like. We want to be a nation that serves goals larger than self. We've been offered a unique opportunity and we must not let this moment pass. Peace, Christine Young

Vine Couplet: Neil & Loudon Wainwright III shows to become a standard...
<this is a re-post...It got sent to topica but not yahoo> **** ...offering. Okay, folks, here's the deal. Thanks to several kind Rusties I've recently learned how to burn my 'ol analog tapes on to CDR PROPERLY (important word, there). Now I do have a few interesting Neil things I'll be offering up to the list soon--Like, later this week--but for the most part, if you ask nicely enough, someone is bound to transfer a DAT of most any obscure Neil show to CDR, thus cutting out the need for analog transfers. However, the same cannot be said for the funniest (and most autobiographical) folksinger in the business: Loudon Wainwright III. There ain't that much of his stuff out there to share, it seems. Over the years I've managed to get hold of several nice shows/tapes, though, and I'd like to get them out into the world (at least more than they already are). I know what you're thinking..."Jeez, if you want to trade LWIII tapes, why don't you go to the LWIII List and do it there?" Thing is: I am a member of the Loudon Wainwright III mailing list and his manager, or someone else close to him, keeps the man appraised of what's being said on the list. And, unfortunately, it's been stated more than once that in no uncertain terms does Loudon condone the recording and/or trading of his music. He hates it, in fact. So, basically, it doesn't happen on the list. Or, if it does, you've got to be stealthy. Sad to say, I'm getting a little tired of it and I know RUST is a forum where other artists have been traded openly so....Well, you can connect the dots. The plan is to offer up a Loudo show once every two weeks along with a Neil show (gotta keep the Neil content going) until I run out of material--Which brings us to the last part of this here diatribe: A PLEA! A CALL TO ARMS! Once you hear one Loudo show (or, even better, attend one of his shows) you're hooked. So call this a grovel. If anyone out there has any LWIII shows please, pretty please with a, uh...I dunno...a Perfect soundboard recording of Neil during his Canadian coffee-house tours...Please drop me a line. I'll make it worth your while. Got lots of Neil and a bevy of others to trade but, more importantly, I'll get that LWIII show out there to anyone and everyone who wants'em. Last Waltz DVD News
To add to the good news about the COmplete Last Waltz cd release. This comes to us from the good old folks over at dvdfile.com; January 29 I'm with The Band - 8:04pm Just in from MGM is a 5/7 release date for the classic Martin Scorsese documentary The Last Waltz. This special edition includes a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, two audio commentaries with producer Robbie Robertson, and director Martin Scorsese and performers, "Revisiting The Last Waltz" featurette with Robertson and Scorsese, and trailers. Retail is $24.95. For the coverart, have a look at the page; http://www.dvdfile.com/software/dvd-video/index.html#01292002 Wonder if Neil popped in to have a go at the commentary? It'll be a shame not have Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters and 'Pops' Staples on the track. However the up side is that the Anti-Neil may turn up for a chat :) _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp.

Test and a question
I'm confused. Can I reply to a post in a digest simply by clicking reply or do I have to change the address to: rust@...? And in this land of conditions, I am Not Above Suspicion

Powderfinger debate
<< This debate seems to come along every year or so but I felt compelled to add my two cents worth. There is no way the narrator in Powderfinger kills himself. Until Neil himself says differently, I will take this opinion to the grave. >> Hey man ... it's just a stupid song!!! ; ) Mike Comatose but walking still P.S. I painfully changed my "from" field on my outgoing emails from "Go Steelers" to my name. Oh well, we'll get 'em next year. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? sp.corrections on minor key
I really must start proof reading.. Woody words with me...and it's as if Neil is telling us girlies, "Oh my little girly let me see way over yonder where the four winds blow free Nobody can see in our holler tree Her mama cut a switch from the cherry tree and laid it on she and me It stung lots worse than a hive of Van's Tupelo honey stinging bees but there ain't nobody that can sing like me Now I have walked a long ways and I still look back to my tanlewood days, I've led lots of grils then to stray gators saying, ain't nobody that can sing like me" nj nyg

Ain't it the truth ?!?!
On August 29th back in 1987, Neil played the song Ain't it the truth for the only time with Crazy Horse as far as I know. According to Sugar Mountain, that show has been taped but unfortunately I have only part of that show. Peter Denut posted a subject on this a couple of days ago. Does anybody have this particular show complete? Or know anything about it, especially regarding Ain't it the truth? Please drop me a mail then. Thanks, Mark _________________________________________________________________ Chat on line met vrienden en probeer MSN Messenger uit: http://messenger.msn.nl

Last Waltz complete?
Rhino records are now promising that the rerelease of The Band's Last Waltz will be 4 CDs not 3 and will be complete. If this is true then Neil's shaky 4 Strong Winds will be there warts and all. Release date is set for April 16th. Jules Upon the Sea <---I'm with Stupid

tambourine - Slip Away
While Larry may have played tambourine part for "Slip Away" live, on the Broken Arrow album, Billy Talbot overdubbed the tambourine part in the studio. I believe he even gets a credit on the album. This is from an interview with Billy in 1996: http://www.thei.aust.com/isite/neilftcover.html Click on the pictures of Neil to go to the interview, and the bit about "Slip Away" is on the 2nd page of the interview. Thanks to Hyperrust for the link! Ned PS. Joe Yankee played "electric tambourine" on Ambulance Blues... I know who Joe Yankee is, but I'm kind of wondering what an electric tambourine is. Another of Neil's jokes?
