Organic foods

Safeway does have organic foods. I was there just this morning and bought
some. I'm wondering about comments made that at FA there were no organic
food concessions and possibly some was " factory crap"? Does anyone have
the real goods on this issue.? I'm really interested. Oh, by the way, did
Budweiser have a booth?

A group from Minnesota (i believe) sold various pork products at one stand,
all of then wearing the stock "Stop Factory Farms" tee shirts. there were
some information booths. i didn't get around the venue all that much, but
for the most part, it was the usual high-priced greasy schlock usually found
at such venues.

Budweiser et. al. were well represented. It was evidenced primarily during
Dave Matthews's set, when a lot of drunken louts headed down front and gave
security about all they could handle. A few were ejected after assaulting
security personnel. RJReynolds was also represented, passing out free
samples of Camel cigarettes which, I assume, the tobaccos within were grown
on organic family farms, eh?

i take MY orders from fools

PS- the Camel Turkish Royals are actually quite good. <hack>

I'm hungry for some cheapo food so I'm off to Safeway
(can't afford that expensive organic stuff). Plus, I sure
didn't see any organic food selections at the Farm Aid
venue. If Neil and the organizers really wanted to show
the value of organic foods to ordinary people like those
who support this show by attending, it seems they could at
least feature some affordable organic selections at the
concessions, instead of that extremely expensive processed
crap they sell which I am quite sure came from factory
farms.

To which I respond:

For a farmer to start farming organic food he/she would have to leave their field fallow for at least two years (it then gets tested for acidity etc.). My father-in law tried organic farming on a quarter section about 4 years ago. He said that the final yield was much less than another quarter section of the same crop and that as a result it generated less money.

Many farmers don't have time or money to farm organically (after all they are ordinary people also)...there's bills to be paid and land to be mortgaged.

Have to respond to at least one point. To become
certified organic there is quite a bit of testing that
is involved, however the fields can still be farmed
during the transition time between the use of
pestasides and becoming certified organic. You have to
stop the use of all pesticides and fertilizers listed
as banned items, but during the first three years your
harvest can be sold as transitional. Many health food
stores sell these transitional items.

Money can be made raising organic crops, it just takes
time to make the transition from "traditional" farming
to organic practices.

I agree that buying all of your food as organic is out
of the reach of many people (including myself), but I
believe that the point Neil was making at farm aid is
to be aware of what is going on, and do what you can
to change the current trend towards factory farming.
There are many family farmers who grow crops that are
not organic, but still need to be supported.

Anyhow, just a bit to add to the discussion.

Cheers,

Tom.

Tom C. brought up an excellent point- that there are many family farmers
that grow crops that are not organic, but still need to be supported. This
year's Farm Aid "theme" or "pitch", whatever one wants to call it, seemed to
have an emphasis on organic foods, but what's most important is the
continuing elimination of the small family farmer by huge corporate farms.
True, many of us cannot afford to buy everything organic (although lately I
have noticed that there's less of a price difference between conventionally
grown and organic produce), we can still do our part, for instance, by
seeking out locally-grown produce that is sold at those mom-and-pop roadside
stands, thanks to the efforts of small family farmers. Their fruits and
vegetables are freshly picked, and even if not organic, tastes quite a bit
better than what can be gotten at a major grocery chain, plus the prices are
the same, or in most cases less expensive !
