Bert Jansch

Paul and Nic

Someone asked about Bert Albums.

Simple answer is the early ones - Bert Jansch / It Don't Bother Me /
Birthday Blues / Nicola (I have to include that one ;-) ) - particularly the
first 2 though.

He had a bit of a fallow period in the middle of his career but Rosemary
Lane is well worth seeking out and if you fancy the idea of Bert with a band
try Conundrum from the early 80's.

He has had a rennaisance of late and Crimson Moon was a great album - aided
by guest spots from Johnny Marr (the Smiths) and Bernard Butler (Suede). Toy
Ballon was not so great (but still good) and the new one sounded good from
what I heard at a recent gig. Not seen it to buy yet though.

Live albums are scarce but there is a great early one called Young Man's
Blues, one from the BBC of Conundrum and an official bootleg called Live at
the 12 Bar of his residency there in the mid-90s.

Unofficial boots I don't know about unfortunately.

Oh, buy everything early Pentangle ever did if you really want to hear him
at his finest. You get the bonus of John Renbourn then too. There is some
great acid folk flying from Bert's fingers on songs like Poison and A Woman
Like You and Jack Orion.

Pick up anything you can!!!! I particularly enjoy his work with John Renbourn in Pentangle...try "The Pentange". Current favorite Jansch album is "Birthday Blues".

I was introduced by my father to Bert Jansch....only to find out later that he was one of Neil's great influences. I didn't make the connection, but now that someone told me, it's obvious....especially Ambulance Blues being "Needle of Death" part 2:)

I picked up this Bert Jansch Anthology after xmasand have been listening to
it on a regular basis and was wondering if anyone here can let me know what
other cds of his might be worth while to get.
How about live stuff?

Blimey - someone must have done some digging to resurrect this thread from 2003!

Bert gets to play to a maximum of a couple of hundred people at his gigs. I've been one of six in an audience when he was at a low point some years ago.

This is going to be really good for him and he has just come back after a significant illness.

Anyone who is going really needs to leave the pre-show fests in good time to see his sets.
