What are "teams"? 16. How do I join a team? 17. What is the origin of RandomGram? 18. What software is used to process the event? 1. How do I obtain a list of code groups to transmit? Email your call sign to [email protected] A batch of groups will be returned to you in the text of an email reply, and also attached as a plain text file. You may want to print your email or the text file attachment and cross off the groups as you transmit them. Or you can simply transmit them from the email or text file attachment displayed on your computer screen. Once a group is transmitted it has no further use and can be discarded. 2. What info is required in order to submit an entry? Please submit your own call sign and the code groups you copy from other stations. QSO details and call signs of other stations are not required. 3. How should I log and submit the groups I receive over the air? All of the following are acceptable. Use whichever is convenient. Submit by email, along with your call sign, to [email protected] ? Logging Program: type your received groups into any text fields (Comments, Notes, Name, etc). Export your contacts as an ADIF file. Submit this file as an email attachment. ? Text File: type any groups you receive over the air into a Notepad or other text file; Submit this file as an email attachment. ? Email Message: type any groups you receive over the air into an email text. 4. What format is required for logging received groups? Almost any typed text is acceptable including email text, ADI logs and spreadsheet CSV. The only required data is the received code groups. Code groups should be separated from each other by spaces, lines, or punctuation. Logging info or other included text will be ignored. Any of the following are acceptable: ? ADI Log File: code groups can be entered into any of the log's text boxes: Comments, Notes, Name, etc. Multiple groups can be entered into one text box. ? Plain Text File: any number of groups per line. Other QSO info is not required and will be ignored; ? Email Message: simply type or copy-&-paste typed groups into an email. No other QSO info needed. 5. How do I earn points by intercepting exchanges between other stations? Simply copy the groups they transmit to each other and submit them along with the groups you log during your own contacts: there is no need to differentiate between the two. Any time you are not engaged in your own contacts you can intercept groups being transmitted between other stations, while waiting to call a working station, etc. 6. What if I correctly copy groups that other operators made mistakes in transmitting? You receive no points. Points are only credited for groups that are accurately conveyed by both operators of a QSO. There is no determination as to which operator may have made an error. 7. If more than one station copies my transmitted group do I receive additional points? No. That would favor stations with higher power output, or locations that have wider coverage. You do however benefit from other monitoring stations copying your groups in case your immediate contact station has not copied you correctly. 8. Why are more points awarded for transmitting groups than for receiving them? Transmitting earns more points because it involves more effort. If transmitting and copying earned the same amount it would be possible for the SWL, who is only monitoring stations, to make as many (or more) points as someone actually engaging in contacts. The current 2:1 transmit/copy points ratio means you can potentially make about 50% higher score engaging in contacts vs monitoring contacts between others. 9. Do the random code groups have any encrypted meaning? No, they are exchange tokens only, not ciphertext. Code groups currently consist of five letters. Each group distributed in an event is unique; there are more than 11 million possible combinations. Alpha-numeric groups may be used in future events if there is demand for it. 10. How can I make multiple same-band contacts with a station? You can contact the same station multiple times on the same band as long as you attempt to work other stations after each such contact. This can be done either by responding to a CQ RG transmitted by another station, or by transmitting your own CQ RG. An actual contact with a different station is not required to be completed but the attempt must be made. 11. Can I make multiple contacts with only one or two other stations for the entire event? You could but generally you will do better to contact many different stations. Otherwise, a large portion of your transmit points will depend on one or few other operators reporting their copied groups. However, new CW operators may prefer initially to stick with one or two stations that they are comfortable working with. 12. Are spotting networks and chat pages allowed to be used? Spotting networks and self-spotting are allowed. Chat pages are also allowed for spotting purposes but should never be used as a back channel assist for conducting QSOs or confirming reception of code groups sent over the air. 13. I don't really care about a score; should I bother to report the groups I've copied? Yes! Always report any groups you have copied during the event. Otherwise, the stations you have worked will not receive credit for the groups they have transmitted to you. 14. How are scores determined & displayed? Scores are determined entirely by the number of code groups successfully transmitted (3 points each) and received (1 point each). The results for each event are displayed as a list of participants' call signs, along with their team affiliation (if any), and TX, RX & Total points. Points totals for up to nine different teams are displayed separately. 15. What are "teams"? Depending on the particular event there can be up to nine teams. Participants are free to join a team effort, or not. As a team member you can operate just as you normally would. Teams might be based upon the key type used during the event (example: straight key vs bug vs cootie); or the geographic location of operators, or club affiliation. A team could also be used to tally combined scores for a multi-operator setup at a specific location. Team descriptions will be posted for each event when in effect. If you have an idea for a team please feel free to suggest it. 16. How do I join a team? If you choose to join a team you can do so at any time during the event or upon submitting your copied groups. Just send an email to RandomGram stating your call sign and team preference. Your score will be combined with other team members for your team's total. 17. What is the origin of RandomGram? The contest was first proposed by AF2Z in Feb. 2009 in the SKCC Forum. It was originally named CQ GX (GX for "groups", as in random coded groups). In recent years a version of the contest was conducted by K2RFP as the CW Fun event. 18. What software is used to process the event? Distribution of code groups, processing of submitted groups, composition of email replies, and compilation of scores is performed with AutoHotkey scripts, AHK is a Windows scripting language.

Sticky RandomGram Overview
Following is a summary Overview for RandomGram. See the separate FAQ for additional discussion. If you have any questions please feel free to post them. Rules: Obtain a transmit list of random code groups by emailing your call sign to: [email protected] Call "CQ RG" or answer such calls on non-WARC HF bands; Send real RST and one code group to the other operator; Type code groups received from other operators into an email text, text file or ADIF log. You can contact any participating station multiple times on the same band (see QSO section below). You can also monitor other stations and log the groups they exchange. Email your callsign and your text file or log containing received groups to the above address. TX List (Transmitted Groups): Each RandomGram code group is a unique 5-character random combination. Operators can request additional TX Lists of 25, 50, 75, 100, etc. groups (except during special "limited" events). Transmit one new group from your TX List during each QSO (see QSOs, below). You can choose groups from the TX List in any order. Your TX List is good for the current event only. Don't share your TX List with others. RX List (Copied Groups): Log the code group transmitted by the other operator during each QSO, as follows: If you use an ADIF log... type received groups into any text box: Comments, Notes, Name, etc; If you don't use a log... type received groups into a text file or an email text. Submit received groups in an email or as an email attachment to [email protected] Don't share your received groups with others. Scores: Score processing requires only your call sign (or SWL ID) and the code groups you have received over the air. Operators can submit groups any time and update them throughout the event. You earn 3 points for transmitting a group if it is accurately copied by one or more other participants; You earn 1 point for accurately copying a group transmitted by another operator. Posted results will show TX, RX and Total points for each participant. Team & multi-op scores are displayed separately. Teams: Participants will have the option to join a team (depending on particular event). Teams may represent key types; geographic location; club affiliation; multi-op setups; etc. Team scores are the sum of team members' individual scores. Team membership is generally open to all participants throughout the event. QSO: A QSO is defined as a contact you make either by calling CQ RG or by replying to a CQ RG (see example CQ's below). Transmit only one new group per QSO. You can make multiple same-band contacts with a station as long as you either transmit a CQ RG call after each contact, or attempt to answer a CQ RG transmitted by another station. Example CQ's: CQ RG DE AF2Z K CQ RG AF2Z RG AF2Z Example QSO: The following example shows a typical RG exchange between AF2Z and KB4QQJ. Responses by KB4QQJ are highlighted: CQ RG DE AF2Z K KB4QQJ KB4QQJ DE AF2Z UR 559 RG XMRPL XMRPL <BK> RST 579 RG YYAMQ <BK> R TU 73 73 RG DE AF2Z K ... It's a good idea to alert the other operator by sending "RG" ahead of your group (as shown above). You may want to send your group twice as AF2Z does above. You can ask the other operator to repeat their group by sending "PLS RG?" or just "RG?" Feel free to add greetings and brief comments in your exchanges. If someone sends you their SKCC info, QTH, name, etc please respond in kind. See the posted FAQ for additional details and discussion.

Event #31 - Sat Apr 19th 3 #event_notice
Welcome to RandomGram Event Nr. 31. Date/Time: Saturday Apr. 19th @ 23:00z (thru Sun 23:00z). This is a 24-hour event with alpha-numeric code groups. Roster & Results. See the list of participating stations, teams, and current scores when available HERE. Objective: Transmit as many different code groups as you are able, one per QSO. If you run out of code groups you can request additional transmit lists from the event manager, available in multiples of 25 groups. Also log as many code groups as you can from other operators, during QSOs and by SWL intercept. You earn 3 Tx points for each unique group accurately transmitted and 1 Rx point for each unique group correctly logged: your total score = Rx Points + Tx Points. New Transmit Lists (code groups) are available now from the event manager. Code groups from previous events have expired and will not score. Obtain a registered TX List by emailing your call sign to the Group Owner email address at [email protected] You may request a Tx List containing 25, 50, 75, etc. code groups. Multiple Same-band Contacts (dup's) are encouraged. Make sure to either transmit a CQ RG or respond to a CQ RG between each repeat station contact ("dup") that you make. See the dup rule HERE. Teams: Teams are listed in the Roster & Results message post for this event (see link above). Suggestions for additional teams are welcomed. Team membership is open to all and is completely optional. Operating on a team is no different than otherwise. Team scores are the sum of individual members' scores. If you're interested in joining a team for this event just email your team preference & callsign to [email protected] Suggested Frequencies: 50-60 kHz above the bottom of non-WARC HF bands, conditions permitting. Other frequencies in the band may prove better depending on your region or QRM from other ongoing events. 7028 kHz is preferable in OC & AS regions. Suggested Spotting Page: RG participants are invited to use the SKCC SkedPage at https://sked.skccgroup.com/ If you are an SKCC member using a mechanical key please be prepared to provide an SKCC style exchange for any callers who request it. Operating Tips: - A transmitted group earns 3-points; a received group is 1-point if accurately logged and reported; - Work the same stations on the same band multiple times and exchange additional code groups (see required procedure here ) - Transmit a different code group during every contact (one code group per QSO); - For additional points monitor other stations: log and submit code groups they exchange (SWL/intercept); - Submit your log or list of received code groups via email to obtain your current score and personal abstract of groups. For additional operating and logging guidelines see the RandomGram FAQ HERE. SWL Intercept: Even if you don't transmit any code groups you can still earn Rx points by submitting code groups you have logged while monitoring other stations. Your confirmation of other stations' transmitted groups also helps them to earn Tx points. Score Submissions: You only need submit code groups that you have logged from other operators; no QSO details required. You can submit your groups at any time during the event to receive an updated score and traffic abstract. The Scores page will be updated during the course of the event; click the link in the Roster & Results paragraph above. Have fun! 73, Drew - AF2Z RandomGram Mgr

Question on band condx 3
I enjoyed the last 24-hour session a lot. I have a question about band conditions. From here in CA, condx seemed just great on 20 meters when the event started at 0000Z. I kept very busy there till 0130Z when my wife came home and it was time to start getting set for dinner. I wonder how long that good propagation continued. And was it good for everyone at that opening time, or did it vary, depending on where you are? I found Sunday to be just so-so propagation throughout the day. Did others find this same thing? Or were there hot times Sunday from different parts of the worldwide QTH? 73, Larry

Coded the radios PF C key to do the swap between VFO-A & VFO-B, which was used extensively chasing those elusive 'Dupes'. Only thing that I'd suggest is that it should be more than a few weeks after K3Y. I know that I've improved my CW copying because of this events format. -- NJ8L 13613S Vern

Event #29 - RG Marathon: 2/15 thru 2/23 11 #event_notice
Welcome to RandomGram Event Nr. 29. This is a special 9-day marathon event. Date/Time: Saturday Feb. 15th @ 00:00z through Sunday Feb. 23rd @ 23:59z. Suggested "watch" hours. Even though you can make contacts at any time during the 7-day period, RG station activity may be concentrated around the following suggested UTC times: 00z 04z 08z 12z 16z 20z Roster & Results. See the list of participating stations, and current scores when available, HERE. Objective: This is an "unlimited" event with alphanumeric code groups-- request as many transmit groups as you like via email from the event manager. Transmit as many different code groups as you are able, one per QSO. If you run out of code groups to send you can request additional transmit lists from the event manager. Also log as many code groups as you can from other operators, during QSOs and by SWL intercept. You earn 2 Tx points for each unique group accurately transmitted and 1 Rx point for each unique group correctly logged: your total score = Rx Points + Tx Points. New Transmit Lists (code groups) are available now from the event manager. Code groups from previous events have expired and will not score. Obtain a registered TX List by emailing your call sign to the Group Owner email address at [email protected] Multiple Same-band Contacts (dup's) are encouraged. Make sure to either transmit a CQ RG or respond to a CQ RG between each repeat station ("dup") contact that you make. See the dup rule HERE. Teams: Teams are listed in the Roster & Results message post for this event (see link above). Additional teams are available by request. Suggested Spotting Page: RG participants are invited to use the SKCC SkedPage at https://sked.skccgroup.com/ (SKCC Members who post or self-spot on the SkedPage-- please be prepared to provide an SKCC style exchange for callers who request it.) Operating Tips: - A transmitted group earns 2-points; a received group is 1-point if accurately logged and reported; - Work the same stations on the same band multiple times and exchange additional code groups (see required procedure here ) - Transmit a different code group during every contact (one code group per QSO); - For additional points monitor other stations: log and submit code groups they exchange (SWL/intercept); - Submit your log or list of received code groups via email to obtain your current score and personal abstract of groups. For additional operating and logging guidelines see the RandomGram FAQ HERE. SWL Intercept: Even if you don't transmit any code groups you can still earn Rx points by submitting groups you have logged while monitoring other stations. Your confirmation of other stations' transmitted groups also helps them to earn Tx points. Submitting copied groups: You only need submit code groups that you have logged from other operators. You can submit your groups at any time during the event to receive an updated score and groups abstract. The Scores page will be updated during the course of the event; click the link in the Roster & Results paragraph above. Have fun! 73, Drew - AF2Z RandomGram Mgr

RG event #29 coming in Feb 2025... 5
Just a quick update... RandomGram #29 will be a 7-day marathon event running from Saturday Feb.15 through Friday Feb. 21st. Requests for Tx Lists (code groups) will be filled starting on Feb 10th. This will be an "unlimited" event, so you can request as many code groups for transmitting as you like; or request "refills" during the event week. (For maximum score you will want to transmit as many different code groups as possible; do not re-send groups.) Also, the scores update will be posted throughout the marathon week. You can submit copied groups any time during the week and receive your updated score and current abstract of sent/rcvd code groups. Suggested "watch hours" will be in effect. You can make contacts 24 hours a day but operating around the following suggested UTC times may help to concentrate activity: 00z 04z 08z 12z 16z 20z I'll be posting the usual event announcement in coming days. Tx Lists (code groups) will be distributed starting on Feb 10th. In the meantime, all are invited to review the rules & FAQ and get ready for RG#29! 73, Drew/AF2Z RG Mgr

"Where Have All the RGs Gone?" (on 15 and 10 meters) 2
I enjoyed RG 28 and thought conditions were pretty decent. The 10 or so qsos I made and the RGs I copied as an SWL were all on 20 meters. A few times during the two hours, I went over to 10 and 15 meters, but I didn't hear any RG 28 participants there. I have a couple of questions: Did others make RG qsos on 10 and 15? If not, or not too many, are we ignoring 10 and 15 for some reason? Fifteen seemed to be nicely open during the RG period, the Reverse Beacon Network told me. 73, Larry, kf6ncx
