Event #26 - Fri Nov 15th 5 #event_notice
Welcome to RandomGram Event Nr. 26: Date/Time: November 15th @ 22:00 - 23:59 UTC. That is Friday afternoon/evening for most. Objective: This is a 25-group event with five-character alphanumeric groups. Transmit each of your 25 code groups (one per QSO) for a perfect Tx score of 50 points (2-pts per transmitted group). You can resend groups in additional QSOs to help ensure that all are logged & reported by other operators. Also log as many code groups as you can from other operators, during QSOs and by SWL/intercept, for maximum Rx and Total points (1-pt per received group). New TX Lists (code groups) are available now for this event. Code groups from previous events have expired and will not score. Obtain a registered TX List by emailing your call sign to the Group Owner email address at [email protected] Multiple Same-band Contacts (dup's) are encouraged. Please use the revised procedure for making multiple same-band contacts, in effect since April; see info HERE. Teams: Teams are listed in the Roster & Results message post for this event (see below). Additional teams are available by request. Team membership is open to all and is completely optional. Operating on a team is no different than otherwise. Team scores are the sum of individual members' scores. If you're interested in joining a team for this event just email your call sign and team preference to [email protected] Suggested Frequencies: 50-60 kHz above the bottom of non-WARC HF bands, conditions permitting. Other frequencies in the band may prove better depending on your region or QRM from other ongoing events. 7028 kHz is preferable in OC & AS regions. Suggested Spotting Page: RG participants are invited to use the SKCC SkedPage at https://sked.skccgroup.com/ (SKCC Members who post or self-spot on the SkedPage-- please be prepared to provide an SKCC style exchange for callers who request it.) Operating Tips: - A transmitted group earns 2-points; a received group is 1-point if accurately transmitted, copied and reported; - Work the same stations on the same band multiple times and exchange additional code groups (see new procedure here ) - Transmit a different code group with every contact (one code group per QSO); - For additional points monitor other stations: log and submit code groups they exchange (SWL/intercept); - Submit your log or list of received code groups via email to obtain your current score and abstract of groups. For additional operating and logging guidelines see the RandomGram FAQ HERE. SWL Intercept: Even if you don't transmit any code groups you can still earn Rx points by submitting groups you have logged while monitoring other stations. Your confirmation of other stations' transmitted groups also helps them to earn Tx points. Deadline for submitting your copied groups: the sooner, the better. Other operators' scores depend on your confirmation of their transmitted groups. Roster & Results. See the list of participating stations and scores (when available) HERE. Objectives and hints for the 25-group event 2
Following are objectives & hints for working the 25-group RG event for those who are trying to maximize their ranking on the score sheet. Objectives... You have only 25 code groups to transmit. Your primary objective is to transmit all 25 and have them all correctly logged by other operators. Then maximize your total score by logging as many groups as you can from other ops. Since you never know if the other operator in a QSO will correctly copy and report a group that you have transmitted it is a good idea to resend your groups in additional QSOs. This will help ensure that all of them earn points, for a perfect Tx score of 50 points (2-points per group), which will put you in the top rank on the score sheet. However, you may want to re-transmit only selected "problem" groups: those having difficult character combinations; or those exchanged under difficult conditions, QRM, etc. That will leave you with more time for logging others' transmitted groups and still give you a fair chance of having all 25 or your own groups logged by others. A reminder about scoring... A transmitted group can earn no more than 2-points for you, no matter how many times you transmit it or how many other operators may log it. With only 25 groups to transmit your maximum Tx score is 50 points. There is no such limit on your Rx score: each unique group that you log, during QSOs or by SWL intercept, will earn 1 additional Rx point and increase your total score. Scores are ranked by Tx points: everyone who has 50 points will be ranked above those who have fewer. In any Tx tier operators are sub-ranked by Rx points. Therefore, among those who have 50 Tx points the one with the most Rx points ranks highest. Maximizing your Rx points... How you gain Rx points depends on your operating style. For S&P simply copy every code group you hear while tuning across the band or while waiting for a QSO to finish. There is no need to eliminate duplicate groups you may have logged previously from the same operator but they will earn you no additional points; they are only counted once by the score processor. Beware of copying too many groups from one operator: you may end up logging duplicate groups which will earn no additional Rx points for you. If your rig has a sub receiver or other dual receive setup you can listen to two stations at once; or listen to one station while tuning around for others. Of course, it takes a little practice to shift your attention between two different stations and pick out the groups they are sending. A CQ station who is running a frequency can listen to traffic being exchanged by an adjacent station. This is not too difficult to do with a little practice. A dual or sub receiver is not required. You can simply use a wide bandpass filter (500 Hz or greater) to monitor an adjacent station; then pause your own CQing to copy any groups traffic you hear. A rig with dual A/B VFO can also be used to to quickly switch back and forth to another station and perhaps catch some of their groups traffic when you pause between CQ's. Hope that helps! 73, Drew/AF2Z

RG#24 teams update 2
A new team has been added for RG#24 called IARU-1. This is for operators in IARU Region 1 who would like to combine their RG results with others in the region. Also, even though there are no power categories in RandomGram there could still be a QRP team. If anyone is interested just let me know and I'll create the team and add you to it. As always, team affiliation is completely optional. Team members receive an individual score just like everyone else but their team affiliation is noted in the results and their individual scores are combined for the team totals. Team membership is not permanent-- you must make a request to join a team each event. 73, Drew/AF2Z RG Mgr

Operating Tips: - A transmitted group earns 2-points; a received group is 1-point if accurately transmitted, copied and reported; - Work the same stations on the same band multiple times and exchange additional code groups (see new procedure here ) - Transmit a different code group with every contact (one code group per QSO); - For additional points monitor other stations: log and submit code groups they exchange (SWL/intercept); - Submit your log or list of received code groups via email to obtain your current score and abstract of groups. Event #20 8
So how did everyone like Event #20? This one was much more fun for me than the last couple in which I found conditions to be very poor. Today I started out on 20 and was pleased to hear a few stations although the band was very noisy. I made a couple of qsos early on. I've got to say, I did not hear many stations calling cq from here at my QTH in northern CA. I was able to snag some RGs as an SWL, however. I tried 15 and 10 meters but heard no stations over there. I tried cqing a bit, and the reverse beacon network told me 15 was open -- I was even heard in Costa Rica and Germany. But no one answered my RG cqing. I heard nothing on 10, and the RBN did not register my calling. After 2300, it got strangely quiet. I didn't hear any RG stations although I heard a couple of ordinary hams just calling cq on 20. I tried cqing but no answers. Tried 15, same thing. Tried again on 20 -- nothing. I started wondering if I had the event times wrong and if maybe the event ended at 2300 Z. Finally, at about 2330, I heard a strong signal at 14.054 calling, "CQ RG." It was K0RO from MS. We worked, and I was happy. The event hadn't ended. I tuned up and down the RG band segment and heard no one else. Went back to K0RO for another qso. And that's how the last half hour of the event went for me. I heard a couple other stations on 20 during that last half hour and copied maybe one RG from one of them. But I kept going back to K0RO for more qsos and RGs. Fun. I'd end a qso with him, move up the band, call CQ, and when no one responded, I'd tune back to where K0RO was CQing and work him again, over and over until 2359. I ended up copying about 30 RGs and sent about eight. Thanks for the three qsos I made. And thanks again to Drew for organizing things. 73, Larry, kf6ncx
