Re: Event #27 - Sat Dec 7th
#event_notice
RG#27 was fairly busy at my QTH-- it was pretty much non-stop action, starting on 40m then going to 20m.
?
Team Straight Key has the highest total points and number of operators: 408 pts for 8 ops. Sideswiper had the highest average of 74 (but only three ops). The second highest average was team QRP, a solo effort by W4KAC. This is our first QRP entry. These results could still change a little as there remains a couple of ops who have not submitted their copied groups yet.
?
Anyhow, you can see the latest scores at the link below. As always, if you want to receive an updated abstract of your sent/rcvd groups just let me know. The scores are at:
?
?
There will be one more RG event later this month, then none in January due to the SKCC Straight Key Month event. I was thinking of making February a month-long RG event with unlimited groups (refills available throughout the month) and a running score chart with daily updates. Perhaps some suggested "happy hours" to help concentrate activity... Still to be determined...

Event #27 - Sat Dec 7th
#event_notice
Welcome to RandomGram Event Nr. 27:
Date/Time: December 7th @ 14:00 - 16:00 UTC. That is Saturday morning/afternoon for US/Europe. Objective: This is a 10-group event with five-letter groups. Transmit each of your 10 code groups (one per QSO) for a perfect Tx score of 20 points (2-pts per transmitted group). You can resend groups in additional QSOs to help ensure that all are logged & reported by other operators. Also log as many code groups as you can from other operators, during QSOs and by SWL/intercept, for unlimited Rx and Total points (1-pt per received group). New TX Lists (code groups) are available now for this event. Code groups from previous events have expired and will not score. Obtain a registered TX List by emailing your call sign to the Group Owner email address at? [email protected] Multiple Same-band Contacts (dup's) are encouraged. Please use the revised procedure for making multiple same-band contacts, in effect since April; see info HERE. Teams: Teams are listed in the Roster & Results message post for this event (see below). Additional teams are available by request. Team membership is open to all and is completely optional. Operating on a team is no different than otherwise. Team scores are the sum of individual members' scores. If you're interested in joining a team for this event just email your call sign and team preference to [email protected] Suggested Frequencies: 50-60 kHz above the bottom of non-WARC HF bands, conditions permitting. Other frequencies in the band may prove better depending on your region or QRM from other ongoing events. 7028 kHz is preferable in OC & AS regions. Suggested Spotting Page: RG participants are invited to use the SKCC SkedPage at (SKCC Members who post or self-spot on the SkedPage-- please be prepared to provide an SKCC style exchange for callers who request it.) Operating Tips: - A transmitted group earns 2-points; a received group is 1-point if accurately transmitted, copied and reported; - Work the same stations on the same band multiple times and exchange additional code groups (see new procedure here ) - Transmit a different code group with every contact (one code group per QSO); - For additional points monitor other stations: log and submit code groups they exchange (SWL/intercept); - Submit your log or list of received code groups via email to obtain your current score and abstract of groups. For additional operating and logging guidelines see the RandomGram FAQ? HERE. SWL Intercept: Even if you don't transmit any code groups you can still earn Rx points by submitting groups you have logged while monitoring other stations. Your confirmation of other stations' transmitted groups also helps them to earn Tx points. Deadline for submitting your copied groups: the sooner, the better. Other operators' scores depend on your confirmation of their transmitted groups. Roster & Results. See the list of participating stations and scores (when available) HERE. Re: Objectives and hints for the 25-group event
Good strategies. Also important is that RX groups do not need the callsign of the transmitting station. For example, most people transmit RG groups twice, so if you chance upon someone in the middle of transmitting, you might be able to pick off the second transmit and earn that point, regardless of the callsign of the transmitter, who, as often as not, just wishes the other station 73 GL and leaves without signing. I used this strategy a few RGs ago when i bounced between two other stations for TX points, and played SWL for their other transmissions and?those of other stations. |
Objectives and hints for the 25-group event
Following are objectives & hints for working the 25-group RG event for those who are trying to maximize their ranking on the score sheet.
?
Objectives...
?
You have only 25 code groups to transmit. Your primary objective is to transmit all 25 and have them all correctly logged by other operators. Then maximize your total score by logging as many groups as you can from other ops.?
Since you never know if the other operator in a QSO will correctly copy and report a group that you have transmitted it is a good idea to resend your groups in additional QSOs. This will help ensure that all of them earn points, for a perfect Tx score of 50 points (2-points per group), which will put you in the top rank on the score sheet.
?
However, you may want to re-transmit only selected "problem" groups: those having difficult character combinations; or those exchanged under difficult conditions, QRM, etc. That will leave you with more time for logging others' transmitted groups and still give you a fair chance of having all 25 or your own groups logged by others.
?
A reminder about scoring...
?
A transmitted group can earn no more than 2-points for you, no matter how many times you transmit it or how many other operators may log it. With only 25 groups to transmit your maximum Tx score is 50 points.
?
There is no such limit on your Rx score: each unique group that you log, during QSOs or by SWL intercept, will earn 1 additional Rx point and increase your total score.
?
Scores are ranked by Tx points: everyone who has 50 points will be ranked above those who have fewer. In any Tx tier operators are sub-ranked by Rx points. Therefore, among those who have 50 Tx points the one with the most Rx points ranks highest.
?
Maximizing your Rx points...
?
How you gain Rx points depends on your operating style. For S&P simply copy every code group you hear while tuning across the band or while waiting for a QSO to finish. There is no need to eliminate duplicate groups you may have logged previously from the same operator but they will earn you no additional points; they are only counted once by the score processor.
?
Beware of copying too many groups from one operator: you may end up logging duplicate groups which will earn no additional Rx points for you.
?
If your rig has a sub receiver or other dual receive setup you can listen to two stations at once; or listen to one station while tuning around for others. Of course, it takes a little practice to shift your attention between two different stations and pick out the groups they are sending.
?
A CQ station who is running a frequency can listen to traffic being exchanged by an adjacent station. This is not too difficult to do with a little practice. A dual or sub receiver is not required. You can simply use a wide bandpass filter (500 Hz or greater) to monitor an adjacent station; then pause your own CQing to copy any groups traffic you hear.
?
A rig with dual A/B VFO can also be used to to quickly switch back and forth to another station and perhaps catch some of their groups traffic when you pause between CQ's.
?
Hope that helps!

Re: next event?
Hi Larry,
?
The next event is this Friday, Nov.15 at 22:00 - 23:00 UTC. Events are currently 1st Saturday and 3rd Friday and are shown on the RG Group page at /g/RG
?
I'll post the initial notice tomorrow.
?
Please note the UTC time has not been changed from previous so it will be an hour earlier local time for those who are now on Standard time. I would have changed the UTC time to an hour later except that it would conflict with the SKCC OQS event starting at 00:00 UTC.
?
Beginning in February RG will occur on different weeks and probably at a different time.

First RG for me.? Lots of fun.??
?
It hasn't been that many years since I listened to random 5 letter code groups as part of code practice.? Definitely not "head copy".? Code groups also require some care while sending to avoid transposition errors.??
?
I read the FAQ's, but didn't remember the "no penalty for dupes", so I spent quite a bit of time answering CQ's from the East Coast with no success. Fortunately, I wrote down every group I heard, so I reported those for 1 point each.

...and I worked your other "RG..." RG. ?It was a tad confusing but your repetition made it work. ?In an unlimited event, I'd be tempted to pass over that group.

I caused myself another problem. ?I always copy the list and increase the font size which resulted in a multi page list. ?I inadvertently. ?made two copies of the same page. ?As I was making my way down the first page, the sixth one on the list spelled a word which is unusual and caught my eye. ?Later on as I was on the second page, I saw that word and realized my problem. ?Cost me 12 transmission points. |

Had a Blast. Still need to balance out the sending CQ points vrs the SWL points. This is the first time I had a RG that started with RG. Not once but 2 different groups. Both required retransmitting as the leading RG caused confusion. Looking forward to RG 26 in a few weeks
