PFE Reweigh Stencil

PFE Reweigh Stencil

This is link to a photo from the collection of the University of Utah:

The load is radishes and onions, not citrus. But the photo does show a good example of a reweigh stencil on the car. In this case, the car was reweighed at Roseville in February 1961.

Re: Load Of Pecan Pieces

Pecans will o rancid if left sealed, faster in warm conditions, even more in Summer's heat.? Reefers for shipping pecans makes good sense.

The stenciling on the barrels appears to say they contain pecan pieces. The captions says the load is pecans.

In any case, this is another example of a non-perishable load shipped in a refrigerator car.

Re: Load Of Pecan Pieces

Thanks, Chief Bob!

Pecan?pieces, who woulda' thunk?

Another destination for reefers!? Now I wonder how raisins were shipped.? A photo at Sun Maid showed box cars. but that was probably in Summer.? Reefers as insulated box cars in Winter?!

Re: Photo: Reefer Train

To help date the picture, the car is a 1950 Chrysler Windsor - Unfortunately, I'm not good at identifying steam engines, but I can tell a car by it's grill :)

Visible among the reefers is PFE 50092, one of the Western Pacific reefers. I believe there were fewer than 3,000 of these WP cars in the PFE fleet.

Re: Photo: Reefer Train

Looks like either the first series of Challengers or a 2-8-8-0. ?I¡¯ll go with the CSA1

Re: Photo: Reefer Train

Bob,

?

Is that a Big Boy heading it up,, or a Challenger?? The photo comes in too small for me to tell.

?

I suppose you saw the clip of the Big Boy running through the snow in Kansas.? A friend sent me pictures that he took of it while running north from Marshall to Atlanta, Texas.? It would be nice if the UP was able to acquire and get the Texas & Pacific¡¯s one remaining 2-10-4 up and running again.? More people would see it that way and the UP does have the resources to maintain it well.

?

The UP even runs up this way, but don¡¯t know if the track, which appears to be well maintained north of Pocatello, ID, is up to excursion standards.

Citrus Label Society website is:

The Society was founded in 1981 for the purpose of providing meeting places for citrus label collectors to gather and exchange citrus box labels, enjoy special citrus-related programs and share information about the citrus industry. The Society continues to provide rotating venues throughout Southern California for these gatherings.

Let me say one last thing about the Citrus Label Society¡¯s meetings.? Many of the crate labels have railroad themes. And in addition to individual crate labels I found books on the citrus industry, juice reamers, attractively framed labels, citrus-related post cards and authentic packing crates offered for sale.?

Re: Refrigerator Car Tags

Route Cards

Tony Thompson noted that on PFE reefers a common location for route cards was near the door. Another common location was near the bolster at the bottom of the car side on wood-sheathed cars. On steel cars the route card would have to be tacked on the route card board (located on the car sill over one of the trucks), but on wood cars, clerks could and did place them all over.

He stated most route cards appear to have been white or manila in color, but there are photos which clearly show pink, yellow, blue and green.

Other person commented that in earlier diagrams the Northern Pacific called these Transfer Cards.

Re: Refrigerator Car Tags

Bob and Others,

Thanks for posting these. I use car tags for car switching/forwarding on my Patch layout, set in Los Angeles. I was able to locate several prototype Santa Fe tags, along with zone numbers, then create replicas on my computer.

For more information on these and using them to operate a model layout, see the sidebar on page 4, accompanying my Patch article in the 2012 issue of Great Model Railroads.

Refrigerator Car Tags

Refrigerator Car Tags

Below is a collection of refrigerator car tags from the collection of Ralph Heiss. Based on the known size of the smaller numbered route cards the larger cards are not as large as a standard placard card. A route card on a freight car also is shown below.

Some of these are route tags, some are instructions and some are for information purposes.

To an extent these cards replaced chalk markings.

A post from Ralph Heiss' Lehigh Valley Harbor Terminal Railway on weathering a reefer with PanPastel medial and an artist's pencil:

This is fairly easy and certainly less messy than using wet media.
