POTA Rally
Greetings Radio Active Society, I would like to invite you to a Parks on the Air Rally on November 4 at 0900 at Cedars of Lebanon State Park, pavilion #1. This will be a boot camp of sorts for people wanting to learn how to do portable ops and POTA specifically. Food will be provided, so we have a sign up form to help us know how much to bring. We plan to have a workshop in the morning and then deploy to several of the parks in the area as the day progresses. I hope to see you there! Sign up at: https://forms.gle/CbNV6LbApnHuZRF37 Also see the attached flier for more information. Please feel free to forward this email and flier to others you think might be interested... and feel free to ask questions. Thanks and 73! Jamie AA4K

New EFHW 40m/20m with 30m link 3
I built a new portable antenna, an EFHW 40m/20m with 30m link. I am using a 17' counterpoise with it, and a 49:1 unun. I hope to try it out next week at a POTA. The wire is 24 gauge ultra flexible silicone by BNTECHNGO. This is the first time using that wire.

Alaska trip 2
Hello all, I will be traveling to Alaska tomorrow. The plan is to be in Juneau on 8/28 at what will be 5pm TN time (2200 Zulu). I will be attempting to activate some parks while there, starting with K-4537 and K-4448 (a two-fer). K-4537 has not been activated yet. Please watch for my spots and help me get it activated. It may take me an hour or so to qrv. I will be qrp (of course), so cw may be the only means of getting through… but I will try voice as well. All I would need from you is your call sign. 20m is going to be the money band. I don’t know what cell coverage is like so I may have to rely on the RBN to pick me up. Thanks! Jamie AA4K

Upcoming radio-active campouts
Greetings, I'm sorry its been a while since I posted anything here, but I wanted to share some upcoming radio campouts in case any of you want to participate. These are all SOTA related, but don't worry if you haven't done SOTA yet... my first SOTA activation was during the fall campout last year with the W4 SOTA group. Lots of good elmers in this community to help show the way... March 17-22 at Cheaha State Park in AL. Some people are only coming for the weekend. Carlos, KB4CO and I are planning to camp the whole time. We will be doing SOTA and POTA. April 15 at Kingdom Come State Park in KY. This is a one day SOTA workshop designed to help people new to SOTA get plugged in. Some people will be camping for the weekend. I will be camping April 14-17. May 3-8 at Stony Fork Campground in George Washing and Jefferson Natl. Forest in VA. This is the big Spring W4 SOTA campout. Let me know if any of you want more details and I can share them with the group. Keep your batteries charged! Jamie AA4K

New Ham Operator in NJ new to the Group Activated Cape May Park on the Beach 2
I activated Cape May Park on the beach yesterday. I activated (4) different bands 10-15-20 and 40 Mtrs. I used an adjustable vertical with 4 radials and a Wolf coil for the 40 mtrs bands. The activity was very good and I made over 20 QSO's per band in 25 minutes. When I activated a park a typically allow 30 minutes per band including antenna adjustments for SWR. Thanks to all that called and made contact on Saturday from Cape May - over 80 QSO's, and bands were activated ! Check out video below of the day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Nkax-EXYzM&t=10s I am new to ham radio, 7 months now and really enjoy POTA activations. If you are activating a park please send me the details in advance and I can share this on my site to help with making more contacts Hello to everyone on this group ! video from POTA meetup in FL 2
Hey guys, The following video isn't all that informative, but I wanted to share it to put a bug in your ear about maybe doing a POTA/portable radio meetup sometime down the road... maybe early spring (our winters are short). Would you guys have any interest in attending (and maybe help with organizing) this? You could be the contact person for your club or ham friend group. Also a reminder for some... Winter Field Day will be here before long! January 28-29. When our club plans are solidified I will share with you all. Let me know your plans as well. 73- Jamie AA4K

Travel to FL this weekend 2
Hello all, I will be traveling to FL at the end of this week for a few days, staying at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park K-3664. I will try to be on the air Friday and Saturday, operating cw and voice. There are some other parks in the area that I may also try to hit, depending on what the family is doing. If you plan to be "radio active" this weekend as well, let us know... perhaps we can make a contact. 73, Jamie AA4K

Greetings!
Hello all, I just wanted to re-iterate and expand a bit on what I had shared in the original invitation to this group. There are, of course, a wide variety of different avenues one could go down within the scope of the radio hobby. While they are all at least somewhat interesting, portable ops is definitely the area that has captured my attention the most. I see it as an enhancement of other things I'm also interested in, such as hiking/backpacking, "prepping", etc. One of the aspects of this hobby I have enjoyed the most is getting to meet and hang out with other people who are also interested in it. I recently spent a few days camping with the W4SOTA (summits on the air) group down in NE GA. This is a very active radio community -- a bunch of people who like being active outside, and like playing on the radio. Of course, living in middle TN, SOTA is not nearly as big here. But we have a plethora of POTA (parks on the air) sites, and other outdoor venues in which to play radio. While there is nothing wrong with building an elaborate shack that can pull the faintest signals out of the ether, it appears to me to lend itself to more sedentary radio pursuits. I definitely don't need something to make me more sedentary. I want to be active as long as I can. Thus, the Radio Active Society idea was born (I must admit, also inspired by Jason - KM4ACK's "Radio Active" stickers). So the idea is that if we are wanting to go play radio, say in a park, or wherever... we can let the group know ahead of time. Perhaps someone in the group would like to hunt you in the park, or maybe offer to spot you if you don't have cell service... maybe they might even want to join you on your outing. What I would really like to see is an occasional get-together where we all reserve several campsites in a park and spend the weekend playing radio together. Sharing ideas on how we set up our portable radio kits would probably benefit us all, and I think this would be a good venue for that as well. Anyway, thanks for your time. Let me know if you have any thoughts. 73, Jamie AA4K
