Steve Hammatt

?Fellow Rhers,
?It is with deep regret that I have to share with you that Steve Hammatt has passed. Here is all I know about his celebration of life. This was posted by his daughter Dec 1st, 2023.

Hi everyone. I’m so sorry to those of you I missed calling over the last few days.
My dad, , passed away on Wednesday, Nov 29th, at home with me in MV.
Mom’s Celebration of Life is on hold. We’ll have one for both of them later in 2024.

This is really sad news.

We have lost another treasure — another of our stalwarts.

We need to honor Steve as one of the founders of the Racing History forum, and for being so dedicated to its structure that still keeps us together.

Godspeed Steve.

Steve was instrumental in moving my original RH mailing list to a newsgroup? Who was it who moved it to groups io- I forget.? This group is and old one, and I like to keep track of it's history.

Don,
?Steve was the one that suggested to me we move it to the IO group. It had a couple of advantages we needed and it was free. It was costing us $200.00 to keep it on Yahoo. I think it has worked out well.?

Certainly sad news. His contributions and guidance for this page were immense.? .?

Sad news indeed.?
As a member of the News Group on the Usenet, Steve and I go back a long way. He was a huge part of my very long online presence. He will be missed by many...
My mind goes back over the Members we have lost over the Decades. I have some very special keepsakes by racers like Len Sutton, I remember The Len Sutton Rule very well indeed. I was the catalyst for that Rule when Len realised I was Aussie and there was a communication issue that he wanted to solve. Because fighting over Stupid was a waste of time. Len knew that more than most.?

Steve was always happy to accommodate new ideas... Vale old mate... RIP?

This is truly sad. I have some images on my computer from when Steve mailed some of his old slides to me to scan after seeing some of my slides that I had scanned. I never shared them with others, just with Steve as they were his work although he gave me permission to use them with a photo credit to him. I will always think of him while looking at these images, just as I am so honored to have an autographed photo of Len Sutton on the wall in my family room.?

This Day in Auto History
1.3.1899
One hundred twenty five years ago, an editorial in the New York Times made a reference to an "automobile" on this day. It was the first known use of the word.
