Racal Cougar battery chemistry?
Hi all
I'm new to the Racal Cougar kit and I picked up a 144mhz unit at a rally yesterday. My question is what is the chemistry of the main battery on the SMT unit for charging purposes ? I have a NIMH for the radio itself but I read there are also Nicad cell packs so I just want to charge it correctly, thanks ?? |

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply yeah I did some digging and found the same answer but thank you for the confirmation. I have discharged and recharged my SMT battery now and had a couple of QSOs with the Couger (I love it). One more question if I may while using the radio there is a constant but soft blip tone. I thought it was low battery tone like the Clansman kit but I have recharged it now and it's still there and I can't find out what it means ? |

开云体育Hi Damian, it means you’re in clear mode (ie: not encrypted) as these radios also offered an encryption module. If you hear a constant 1hz roughly blip, it reminds the user that you’re speaking on an open channel and not to discuss sensitive information.? Incidentally, if you switch to A and B do you hear a constant tone? It means with the encryption module isn’t installed or not programmed. I feel you will hear a constant tone. ? 开云体育?Hi Damien, these normally had a big yellow sticker on the back that said “this radio is not secure”. ? Internally the pins on the encryption board should have 4 jumper wires to bypass the CVSD module. ? More information is here and well worth a read. |
