Racal Cougar battery chemistry?

Hi all
I'm new to the Racal Cougar kit and I picked up a 144mhz unit at a rally yesterday. My question is what is the chemistry of the main battery on the SMT unit for charging purposes ?
I have a NIMH for the radio itself but I read there are also Nicad cell packs so I just want to charge it correctly, thanks ??

They are nicad. But they are getting old now and individual cells are failing!

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply yeah I did some digging and found the same answer but thank you for the confirmation. I have discharged and recharged my SMT battery now and had a couple of QSOs with the Couger (I love it). One more question if I may while using the radio there is a constant but soft blip tone. I thought it was low battery tone like the Clansman kit but I have recharged it now and it's still there and I can't find out what it means ?

Hi Damian, it means you’re in clear mode (ie: not encrypted) as these radios also offered an encryption module. If you hear a constant 1hz roughly blip, it reminds the user that you’re speaking on an open channel and not to discuss sensitive information.

? Incidentally, if you switch to A and B do you hear a constant tone? It means with the encryption module isn’t installed or not programmed. I feel you will hear a constant tone.

Ah ok cool that's clever.I didn't think it was the battery but it did have me guessing ?.
I haven't tried A/B setting as the guy I purchased the Couger from told me it didn't have the encryption fitted.
Loving the set.(Lots to learn)

?Hi Damien, these normally had a big yellow sticker on the back that said “this radio is not secure”.

? Internally the pins on the encryption board should have 4 jumper wires to bypass the CVSD module.

? More information is here and well worth a read.

Hi folks,

is it possible to find somewhere the MA-4516B battery pack please?
My lithium battery pack is dead (both of them I have) and I have no idea how to power
it except using it together with TA-4523 .

Many thanks,
Petr, OK1RP

Hello Robin,

thanks for hint. It seems interesting even although I was thinking about MA-4516B which is the container for 8x AA cells.
It seems to be more flexible as cells can be replaced when they have died.
I will try to contact them to check the availability and price.

regards,

Hi Petr
Sorry I missed the bit about it being a battery magazine! ?The batteries I have bought from Axess are lasting well and about ?40! ?They are slightly larger than the original issue ones. They fit the racal 4742 too!
