Help needed

Hi folks, I have found in my attic the following kit, one BCC 66-H, with a BCC567HF attached to it.
Can somebody tell me what this kit is ?, frequency range , power requirements, audio connections etc, and what antennae it needs please.

Leighton,
It¡¯s a Jaguar V, tactical VHF manpack, with a 16/50W amplifier appliqu¨¦/ vehicle interface unit (VIU). ?The basic radio covers 30-88MHz, with about 4W output, FM only, in 25kHz steps, and can also hop, if correctly set up.

There should be a short coaxial link, and control ¡°dog bone¡± 7 pin connector joining the radio and VIU together, plus a DC supply cable needed to power it all up: some earlier VIU¡¯s are conventional Clansman types, other later ones have more exotic DC leads. ?The radio itself runs off a 12V 4Ah nicad, and uses a standard Clansman 7 pin headset/handset, but the various VIU¡¯s can be configured for 12 or 24V, I believe.

Whips are very hard to come by, unless you pay daft money, but you can always use the BNC connector for a 4m or 6m whip or helical.

There can sometimes be issues with the radio and VIU communicating, if they weren¡¯t originally configured as a vehicle set, or clip-in.
There is an internal lithium AA sized 3V memory back up battery internally fitted, that once flat will stop the radio retaining memory channels if you program them in, but it should otherwise work OK, if you select Channel M (for ¡°Manual¡±).

Nice radios, with a sensitive receiver, but they do have a hefty 150Hz CTCSS sub tone on tx: most other military radio users won¡¯t hear it, but people with modern amateur radio gear will get the full benefit!

Hi Al, thanks for the info, this one has the dog-bone link at the bottom and the coax link at the top, will have to see if I can power it up using my 13.8v supply for my Yeasu 847, should be ok as it's a 35 amp supply, I also have a solar charged car battery as backup, any idea what hand/headsets it uses ?, I have a load of Clansman kit here, 320, 321, 351/2 and 353 along with a Racal 5080.

Leighton,
You should be able to power the radio up, with 12V on the two battery studs at the base of the radio, one connection goes to the chassis/case, and the other is the 13.8V input, and usually marked with a ¡°+¡±. ?

There are quite a variety of VIU¡¯s for the Jaguar, for different vehicle fits, export markets and orientations of the radio, and some are marked specifically as 12 or 24V, again with the negative usually going to the chassis/casing. ?Powering it up with 13.8V first is wisest, to see what happens, and if the yellow ¡°low voltage¡± light flashes with 13.8V, it indicates it¡¯s probably a higher voltage input required. ?There was one, specific VRQ prefixed station that ran off 13.8V, but I believe most were designed for 24V vehicles. ?Current drain, st 50W isn¡¯t massive, about 6A or so from memory.

Normal Clansman audio gear should work, even later Racal handsets with electret mics, as they pick up power from Pin C on the audio sockets. ?Whatever works on your 5080 should work well on it. ?Pic of battery attached, showing positive marking.

Worth checking inside the battery case. The two flat terminals are not power, they go to what I guess are thermal switches. The two terminals with 4mm holes are spring loaded.

Gordon,?
Good point, the two big spring loaded terminals, (which mostly have 4mm sockets set in them) are the positive and negative battery connection, and the two smaller, flat contacts connect to thermal cut out switch/s, and sometimes a PTC resistor inside the battery pack, that tells the various different chargers how to charge the battery, or if it is deemed fully charged, etc. ?

Other then those components, the battery is not usually ¡°smart¡±, so if charging it via the audio connectors, you need to make sure the charger you¡¯re using, or PSU, is current, voltage and time limited, otherwise it will eventually cook the battery, if much over 45mA.

One of the small flat connections often also connects to a battery terminal, so worth checking inside a battery first, if it¡¯s newly acquired, to make sure. ?They¡¯re very user-friendly batteries for rebuilding, either to donate their original innards to build something else, or to fit lithium batteries in, with suitable charge controllers and BMS circuitry.

Hi Gordon, I did not get a battery when I bought the set, any idea where I could get one ?, what is the number of the battery, I can do a search for it.

Hi Leighton

I have't had a reply from you asking for a PM with your address yet !!

I have just checked my stock and have put a good battery out for you?

as soon as I get your address I'll get it on its way

Regards Eric?
