A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE GROUP OWNER

Hi, All,

I am sure that many of you will by now have become aware of the decision by Yahoo to cease hosting member-contributed material on their Groups within the next few weeks.

I will send out a posting, hopefully tomorrow, with a few more details of the implications of this, but in the meantime perhaps you could cast your eyes over the following. The general assumption amongst Group members (not just this Group) appears to be that the obvious platform to migrate to is groups.io, and I know that many of you are already members of Groups operating there.

Were this Group to migrate to groups.io, and assuming that that would be to their "Basic" (ie, free) service, the first column below shows some of the features which we currently enjoy that would be lost.

I'd appreciate your feedback (I think we can probably take our views on Yahoo's parentage as spoken for) or, in particular; whether you have any knowledge of platforms which offer an alternative to groups.io?

Best regards,

Bob

Hi Bob

I think their terms for transferring a Yahoo group to Groups.io changed around february 2019. They no longer offer the basic package for migration. You have to take the paid premium package ($10mth/$100yr) for the first year and at the end of the first year downgrade it to the basic free package.

Details here ? ? /yahootransfer

Hi Bob et al,

I think going over to groups.io wont be a big issue, if their free service would be available.

As it looks one would have to pay their premium service for the first year ($110/year), I think
it might make sense to just get a simple Linode for $60/year and the name
racal-manpacks.radio (EUR25/year for nonprofits) or even cheaper
something like racal-manpacks.org and install an own groupserver. Would
be cheaper, and one is more "in control".
Just my 2c.
Cheers,
Olaf CE7UVK

Hi Bob, I believe Dennis Starks has already reached out to you about moving the Racal-Manpacks Yahoo group.? To that end, I have a groups.io group at the premium plan level that was paid for BEFORE the 12 noon deadline (GMT+5) today 10/22/2019? (1 year, 10GB, $110 USD).? The cost increased to $220 USD as of noon today.? I'm willing to let the group use this "parked" host plan and work with you perform the transfer if you are interested.? I would of course like to ask donations to offset the cost once the transfer is completed.? If this is of interest, contact me via my registered email associated with my membership to this group.

Best Regards,
John W8SDA (ex WD8INC)

Hi, John,

Thanks for that. Yes, I'm in the process of negotiating with Dennis, and have just taken the step to make groups.io a moderator so that they can effect the change. I'm just waiting to hear back from them.

Best regards,

Bob, G8IYK
