Hello

I have just bought a MA4224, is it possible to get a copy of your
manual? Haveserach for it and not found anything:

Also will this work with any military radio with 7 pin clansman
connectors.

Shelved the stuff to attack it later ;)

Same as the PRC319 with the flakey power switch, and bad TURF. :)

Hi Ira,
So Far I have one MA-4450 working ( at least seens to show the
right
stuff on the screen) and the other just like yours: leds on and
display crazy. I remember reading somewhere that these beasts
suffer
from an unusual interconnecting system between the
boards...there
are narrow flexible bits with tiny tiny wires inside that are
supposed to make the connections via the pressure of the screws
that
hold the boards in place. It appears that the things shrink with
age
or something and the contacts become marginal. You can take them
apart and solder ribbon cable instead of the rubber thingies.
This
is no small job, you will need the following:
1) Nerves of high tensile steel.
2) Valium or something !
I want to give a shot repairing the non working one when I am
feeling more in the mood (Just done my backdated tax return ).
I always wondered if these units use the same format and
protocol as
the prc319 emu. It would be interesting to try themm out with
some
other guys on HF.
Oh, one last unnerving thing about the MA4450: I have the right
plug, but could not power it up from any of pins !
I took the cover up and supplied 12 volts to the power fuse
inside
and it worked. I dont know whay it should do this, I mean its
meant
to be powered up from the radio plug. Perhaps it will only work
on
24 volts from the plug. I am not prepared to risk this before I
get
more details. How did you power yours up ? If from the radio
plug,
which pins ?
About the MA-4224 encryption units:
Both internal memory batteries are dead and leaking. I removed
both.
I was trying to figure out what kinda batteries these are; well
they
are 3 cell construction.... and when I powered up with an
external
supply I measured 10v across the battery terminals. This would
indicate a constant current charging system , perhaps for a
nicad.
However 3 nicad cells is barely 4 volts; I would have thought
that
with 25 year old technology the memory backup would be at least
5
volts, but I am only guessing here.

The good news is that I am getting a full manual for the MA4224
and
some more info for the MA4450.

I will keep you posted.
I am interested to know how youn powered up your MA4450 and at
what
voltage.

Regards
Vincent

There's a level control preset that has a 1 k Ohm resistor in series
with it, R59. Lifting one end of that will disable the tone.

Battery pack MA 928 requires a 7 Amp fuse.
The TRA921 has got a fuse at its back, but value is unknown to me.
The TRA931 has got a fuse inside, apparently 1 Amp.

They were much used on the earlier Racals, the RA1217 and RA1772 for
example, before the 5 x 20 mm size became the international
standard. I
have never been able to find a source in the US, and my stock is almost
gone, so I'd appreciate a source as well! The obvious places like RS
don't seem to have them.
I have in the past repaired these out of desperation, but buying some
would be a lot easier.

many thanks for your comments, please see below.

to: All Stations:
I found in the meantime that Farnell is offering this type of fuse.
Some details:

7 A fuse: Belling Lee No. L-562 7A, Farnell No. 534535 or 9688056,
fast blow.

1 A fuse, fast blow: Belling Lee No. L-562 1A, Farnell No. 9688013.
1 A fuse, slow blow: Belling Lee No. L-754/PCB/1, Farnell 1207153.

Inside the USA try Newark InOne.
Countries not having a Farnell branch, see Belling Lee website:
www.blpcomp.com, go to distributors.

I have never found the manuals for this one. However a lot of the
circuitry and some of the boards are the same in the MA4014 which I did
find on line, but it is in a pdf format that does not permit printing it
out. As I have never been able to work on things on the bench and refer
to a computer screen with only part of the circuit visible at the other
side of the room this did not really help me to get mine going... But
you may be luckier!

Re: Racal MA-4450 MEROD

Just an update, spent today looking at the ma4450, and managed to get
it to power up now.
Here's what I did, looking at the 1802 micros on the three pcb's there
was no clock on pins 1 and 39.
I followed it from the frontpanel down the grey ribbon cable to
knowhere.
After removing the 'middle' pcb of the three they are connected together
using rubber strips with wire in them, similar to 'zebra strips'.
Having had trouble in the past many times with these type of
connectors, especially after they get damp and have aged, I removed
them.
I made up some jumpers from very thin ribbon cable and replaced them.
Applying power, the unit now powers up and 'seems' to work, it says
unit ok anyhow.
Just got to work out how to make it do something now ....

Just a suggestion for others who have a 'duff' looking unit.

Regards
Tony
