Yes, I noticed your initials on it – I think you were the one with the best diagrammatic skills, unlike my scrappy scribblings ?

Was this fault found and fixed Graham? Would be interested what it was.

A fine little radio! And it fits the Low band SMT cougar amp!

Hi Chris,

You may find the attached helpful – it shows the Tx RF circuitry of the pre-production B model (which was pretty close to the final from what I recall).? I worked on quite a bit of the RF of this unit, but it was a long time ago!? A couple of things that might be worth considering – the Tx ouput stage had two back-off mechanisms:

  • A thermistor (P390 below TR21?) soldered to the heat clip on the PA output transistors – if that went open circuit you’d get no output
  • There was a control loop to reduce the Tx power to maintain the battery voltage at 8 V in transmit so that you could maintain comms for as long as possible with an almost flat battery – again an issue there could cause no RF out.?

?

If the synthesizer were out of lock then there would be no output, but if the receive is OK then that is unlikely – one of the pins on ML4 will change state when it’s OOL.?

?

I’d be interested to hear how you go!

Hi Chris

I was one of the engineers who worked on the design of this radio but it was so long ago I cannot remember details of the schematic. You could try contacting Jon Withers who posted earlier in this thread. I'm pretty certain he still has a couple of the radios.

Hello chris?

I think my friend have complete factory documentation for PRM 4720A from our army.

Re: PRM 4720

Hi guys.? So I did get that PRM-4720A radio, but sadly, is partly faulty.
So the radio powers up fine, the RX is ok, but it has no TX signal whatsoever, no RF output power.
What I am really after now is a service manual for it, I could not find any such manual for this model on the web.
Is anyone able to help out with this?? Even just some schematics would be a big help.
Thanks very much.? Regards, Chris.

Re: Replacement part for an RA1792

2N4392 would be a reasonable sub, yes.

Re: Replacement part for an RA1792

If the gain is in the correct ballpark and the breakdown voltage is high
enough, the J112 will probably work, but the J112 is a much higher end part.

Re: Replacement part for an RA1792

Depending where you are, I bought 5 from Canada off eBay for $1, with about $6 shipping.?

Thanks Shaun. Unfortunately their min order and shipping charge make it not viable!

Re: Replacement part for an RA1792

Yes its just a switching/chopper. Thinking about trying a J112.

Re: Replacement part for an RA1792

Here are a couple of sources, both reasonable:

(Europe)

(North America)
I have purchased from Elliott several times and they are reputable.

Re: Replacement part for an RA1792

NTE467 should be fine. 2N4391, 2N5555 might be okay. Lead configurations
may vary.

JFETs are becoming rarer and rarer on the ground today, but this is likely
just being used for switching.

Replacement part for an RA1792

Carly

This might seem like an obvious question but I want to be sure that I use a correct substitution.

On the A6A2 Microprocessor board Q6 is a TIS74. This appears to have failed. TIS74's are rather dated and difficult to source now. (a few overpriced ones on ebay). I'm thinking that there must be a number of common and more recent JFET's that I could use to replace this? Could someone advise on suitable replacements? I just want to be sure and get this right!

Thanks.
