Re: BCC-66H

Hi Srdjan!

It looks to me, like some gorillalilla! Ripped the pins off the BNC connector!?! It's a mystery how some miscreant could rip the pins off! Or shear them off with a pipe wrench?

Other than replacing the connector, I guess you could build some kind of bracket to hold the connector in place externally.

Good luck, looks like a neat radio.

If you mean R80 on the VRM5080C or VRM5080S RX module it's 10 ohm 1/4 watt metal oxide.

TRA 921 wiring

Hello,
I was looking at charging the MA948 battery for my TRA 921 through the audio connector.
Before I did so, I noticed the wiring on the bottom of the case does not appear to be complete.
Looking at the radio upside down and the battery connections on the right there are three screws.
The nearest screw (which is attached to a black wire inside the case running to the PCB connector) has two tabs.? One tab has a spare fuse pushed into a loop, the second tab has a blue wire running to a metal disc attached to the bottom of the case and to the left of the battery connectors.
The middle screw has a tab with a blue wire attached that runs to the side of a fuse holder attached under the third screw.? There is a blue wire running from the base of this fuse housing to a tab under the third screw (the screw holding the fuse holder).? On this middle tab there is also a blue wire that runs back under the fuse holder but it has been cut so it is at the end of the fuse holder.? Inside the case, there is a red wire running from the middle screw to the PCB connector.
There is a second metal disc to the left of the battery connectors and about 3" away from the first metal disc.? There is also a blue wire soldered to this disc, but it is also cut about 1/2" away from the disc.
So, what should the two cut wires be attached to??
The only documentation I have is the Technical Manual which does not appear to have a wiring diagram for what I have described above.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Ian

Re: Racal battery charger MA945S

Mike,
I am not familiar with the charger but I do have a suggestion regarding the bulbs, that is, if you can't find replacements.

If they are bad, you could sacrifice the glass and filament with a set of pliers or other implement of destruction.
Then, a LED and resistor could be soldered back into the screw base.
Once the cap is back on the indicator, it would probably look about the same.

Does anybody have some - need 2 at least.? The globe part is quite small, straight sided, a lot smaller than the usual torch bulbs

does anybody know where they can be obtained or have any suggestions?
LES or SES bulbs do not fit

hardware failure Remote Control Head CODAN 9366HF

Good morning all.

I got my hands on a CODAN 8528 radio and some accessories.

Unfortunately, the 15-pin plug of the CODAN 9366HF SSB TRANCEIVER remote control is torn off.

I do not find on the canvas the wiring of it.

Is one of the members of this forum likely to enlighten me or give me a lead.

Thanks in advance.

Warmly.

Fred.

Re: just joined, need assistance with a deaf Syncal 30

John:
?THANK YOU.
I will check those areas the next time ! I do hear relays clicking when the PTT is pressed. Nevertheless I will check.
I got my spectrum analyser up and running, the tx frequency seems to be about 1 MHz low compared to the frequency setting of the racal.
Could the first LO be bad ?

Re: just joined, need assistance with a deaf Syncal 30

TRA931 Relays
From my recollection relay failures in the TRA931 where fairly rare, unlike what some self-appointed points of knowledge of all things Racal on this forum claim repeatedly. In the 25 years I was with the company I never replaced a relay in a TRA931. I am not saying there where was never a requirement to replace relays in the TRA931 its just I never replaced one neither do I remember any of my close colleagues doing so either. The TRA931 was probably the most widely sold HF manpack from any manufacturer. These radios where sold globally for operation in all climates from the tropics, deserts to the artic so the design is very well proven for its reliability and design.
I have however experienced issues similar to those described on this site attributed to main relay failure. This was diagnosed to the ZTX212 relay driver transistor and 1N4149 switching diodes on the PTT line going out of specification.
Back in the early 1970¡¯s when the TRA931 was designed and went into production the ZTX212 transistor had a hfe of 40 but as the years past and the transistor production process improved the hfe increased up to around 120 if my memory serves me correct. Racal at the time recognised that this could potentially be an issue and had the transistors graded and distinguished by a coloured paint spot on the individual device. With age the 1N4149 diodes have become leaky (I remember a particular batch of ITT manufactured devices had a very high failure rate in this respect) normally the ZTX212 relay driver transistor will work as expected but once diode leakage reaches a critical point the transistor will remain latched once operated due to the diode leakage current being sufficient to keep the transistor switched on and latched. This also applies if the ZTX212 is replaced by a new device its higher hfe will cause the transistor to latch in its on mode due to the leakage current from the offending 1N4149 switching diode, if you have a transistor tester it may be worth selecting a replacement transistor with a lower hfe to minimise the chance of transistor latching.
The relay latching issues described by people on this site may suggest that the above may be their real issue and not a failure of the relay. It is worth checking the voltages around TR30 and the four associated 1N4149 switching diodes (D36 to D39) to check for latching and correct operation of the PTT line ect. It may be worth just replacing the four 1N4149 diodes as they are cheap and readily available if you do not have a tester that can measure diode leakage.

Re: Syncal 30 Battery cell replacement NiMH Lithium-ion batteries ?

I used LiPo batteries for my RC planes. Very reasonable pricing. Cant beat the power /weight or power/volume. Cheapest battery size is 3 series 2200mAH packs, 12.6V fully charged. On a sale such a pack is ~ $10? and up for a 20C discharged rated pack. Series connect 2 packs and parallel up for more capacity. One store I often order from has a sale.

prices and shipping charges vary by region. As others have mentioned charging and discharging is important to follow the LiPo chemistry requirements.
I thought of using LiPo but I friend gave me some UPS maintenance pulls, so I am using NimH's at this time.?

Re: just joined, need assistance with a deaf Syncal 30

Syncal-30 is a complex set so you cannot expect a simple answer like "it's C23". You must get the circuit printed out with the parts locator diagram and work through it. Start with PSU voltages.

You must analyse faults in detail. Is your "1Mhz" out meaning 1.0000MHz out and is that for any dialed fq, or what?
You need to get your analyser or fq counter to look at the synth output and the reference output to check they are right. I have seen IC faults with the 74LS versions causing the synthesiser to make a digital error in selecting the frequency. I presume it is not beeping to indicate "out of lock".

The big relay is the one everyone looks at but there are many more - which look like ICs. Check them all.
A common reason for a relay not engaging is that a transistor is faulty. I have fixed many Syncals with strange faults with the transistors that are effectively doing simple logic functions relating to RX/TX and CW keying etc. They seem to go very low hfe or just leak badly, making the voltages incorrect. So always check the relay drive before changing a relay.

I have to say that yours does look like it may have been exposed to a lot of moisture - not a good sign. The "X" model has no good reason to get its boards corroded. The "P" model has a good reason - the internal battery leaking.

Re: just joined, need assistance with a deaf Syncal 30

It seems to tx about 1 MHz lower than it should. If the dials are set to 15MHz, it outputs around 14 MHz if my spectrum analyser is correct.?

I took the shields off of the radio and noticed that both boards seem to have some deposits or light corrosion ? Or is it a conformal coating ? sorry in advance for the large pic ( 3MB)

Re: just joined, need assistance with a deaf Syncal 30

Did some more checking, the TX is transmitting but no where? near the set frequency.
Have to warm up the spectrum analyser.
Any hints ? where to start ?
