Re: BCC 45B-50

Hello all,

This was a sweet little unit from British Communications Corporation (BCC)
and was first launched in 1963 and I think the Airband one was first to
market. There were different frequency bands and all the units I have seen
were AM with about 150mW Tx power. In both low band and high band variants,
but the 50MHz one is new to me.
I believe intended as a paramilitary or rough use radio rather than really
military. More durable than the (then) contemporary Pye Bantam. Came with
a miniature speaker/mic or green S.G.Brown handset. Interesting that some
are still around.

Regards from Vienna
Chris Horswell

HI Stuart and thanks
?
that's very interesting .
I think looking at the numbers that the letter could indicate the frequency band. as i say mine is coded with the letter "B" what?is your set letter if you can find it ??
?
the 45 could be the design and the 50 could be 500mw output ??
thoughts
cheers

I checked my set out, tis exactly the same as you describe and the one in the Rigpix shot, but my one must have it's original BCC nylon tele handset, also weird is the Freq plate 87.30 Tx and 87.30Rx??
?
And the antenna mount remains the same, when I have time, I will take a pic

Re: Can anybody help BCC 703 or BCC 565

peter

Hi Michael,

The BCC565 is indeed an HF AAMTU for use with the Panther 2000 H HF manpack radios (BCC39). I believe that it, or a variant, was also used with the Racal Yeoman HF radio. It covers 1.5 to 30MHz and is rated at 25W. it can be used clipped to the manpack radio or remoted. Power is via the co-ax socket from the radio. I expect the small cans you mention are relays.

I've found no info at all on the BCC703. The socket with only pins E, F, and G wired does seem strange.

No moving parts that I can see

Both look a bit prototype on pcb's

Re: Batteries

Philip

Just buy them online and have them shipped to UK, unless the pricing for shipping is prohibitive.

BatterySpace are who I get all my cells from both for TRA967 and 931 battery packs. They are just an importer / distributor of Chinese cells so I don't imagine they would be interested in selling to the UK. But they are good value, specially so when they have special offers, and I have not yet had a duff cell from them.

They also have a round NiMH cell with tabs, 5 of which can be used to make up a 6 Volt battery for the portable Racal Morse and Data units like the MA4230 / MA4231/ MA4245 to replace the Varta one which I have never yet found an equivalent for...

Homemade packs

Philip

HOWEVER, use caution when soldering up your pack and be especially careful not to accidentally cause a short circuit with your jumpers. Take your time.

There is a lot of energy bound up in even uncharged cells and things can get exciting VERY quickly in an unpleasant way. AND, be sure to include a fuse on the positive pack pigtail when you are done.

They are NiCd batteries and they are 24 volt packs so you want 20 cells
in series. That's a lot of cells.

You cannot solder to the cells directly without risking damage, but you
can buy cells with tabs attached which you can solder together. Your local
battery recelling shop can spotweld the whole pack together if you want to
go that way also.

Well done Scott

Help!

Hi I have just joined your group as I am interested in this kind radios and I am also looking for info about the Racal BCC 66HD. I need to find the specs and circuit diagram + info about the rest of the kit for this radio.

Thanks

Re: Syncal batteries

Forgive my ignorance, but why is it not acceptable? I don't think I'm
alone in doing this!
NiCds have a fairly wide charge range where they are happy. NiMH cells
are very, very easy to damage in comparison.

You could well be right Scott, but since Nicads are getting hard
to find
anyway, I will continue to use NiMH cells and charge them with
constant
current, from the regular external charger who's number escapes me
(nothing in the Syncal itself), which works for fine me, so far...
Famous last words maybe.

Is the Racal charger you mention the 945S??
Stuart

After a trip to the garage to check; the MA 945 B, yes. I usually give the 7 Ah pack 24 hours instead of the 14 hours for the lower capacity pack. It's been about three years now, so far, so good.
