Homemade packs

Philip

HOWEVER, use caution when soldering up your pack and be especially careful not to accidentally cause a short circuit with your jumpers. Take your time.

There is a lot of energy bound up in even uncharged cells and things can get exciting VERY quickly in an unpleasant way. AND, be sure to include a fuse on the positive pack pigtail when you are done.

go that way also.

Help!

pdq143

Hi I have just joined your group as I am interested in this kind radios and I am also looking for info about the Racal BCC 66HD. I need to find the specs and circuit diagram + info about the rest of the kit for this radio.

Thanks
Jake.

Re: Syncal batteries

Forgive my ignorance, but why is it not acceptable? I don't think I'm
alone in doing this!
NiCds have a fairly wide charge range where they are happy. NiMH cells
are very, very easy to damage in comparison.

You could well be right Scott, but since Nicads are getting hard
to find
anyway, I will continue to use NiMH cells and charge them with
constant
current, from the regular external charger who's number escapes me
(nothing in the Syncal itself), which works for fine me, so far...
Famous last words maybe.

Is the Racal charger you mention the 945S??
Stuart

After a trip to the garage to check; the MA 945 B, yes. I usually give the 7 Ah pack 24 hours instead of the 14 hours for the lower capacity pack. It's been about three years now, so far, so good.

Re: Syncal batteries

Well, if there are 19 cells in the pack, that would explain why I had
such a hard time getting 20 cells in there.

The higher voltage per cell on charging probably reduces the battery
lifetime a bit.

I certainly would not recommend using Nicads nowadays with more modern
chemistry cells available, since they are prone to leak and the new ones
mostly do not.
That's fine if you have a charger for whatever other battery technology
you're going to use. What has advanced in more recent years has been
more charging than actual battery chemistry; lithium accumulator chemistry
has been around for years but actually charging them consistently without
wrecking them is nontrivial.

Re: Syncal batteries

My manual states that there are 19 cells in the MA934 battery pack, and indeed that is what was in mine ( ex-Iraqi military). I was easily able to re-cell mine with generic Chinese made D size NiMH cells with solder tags on them. The capacity is a lot higher than the original Nicads, 7Ah. Due to the way these are wired and arranged it would be difficult to use a supplied made up pack, since these come shrink wrapped, so to speak. Maybe the lesser number of cells was to keep the fully charged voltage down a bit. I think you can find C size NiMH with capacity similar to the original Nicads, but I like having the extra capacity.

I certainly would not recommend using Nicads nowadays with more modern chemistry cells available, since they are prone to leak and the new ones mostly do not.

Re: S batteries

On the subject of Syncal 30 packs, I have rebuilt a couple of them and I
just could not get the modern D cells to fit inside there. I wound up
using C cells and packing the extra space in there with packing foam.

This results in very easy assembly that you can do yourself on the kitchen
table, and much greater capacity than the packs had when they were new
(although a good bit less than if you'd used modern D cells). Just as
importantly, it means packs that weigh maybe a third less, and that is a
fine thing when you are carrying the radio up a mountain.

Charge rate seems to be okay. Have not had any problems in a couple years
of occasional use.

I contacted a battery supplier. He can make up a pack of 12 sub C cells
which will fit inside the SE6861 battery case, various capacities.
14.4V 2500mAh 21.00
14.4V 3300mAh 26.00
14.4V 3700mAh 32.00
14.4V 4300mAh 42.00
14.4V 4600mAh 49.00
Anyone interested in making up a bulk order ? I would be happy with the
first option, 2500mAh.
Anyway, let me know and if there's enough interest I'll see what can be
arranged. I would be willing to have them posted here and post them on
afterwards but I'd want payment for the batteries first then payment of
local post costs plus a division of the initial charge.
