I have had one of these for a couple of years - the chap who sold them on
e-Bay described them as being for the Cougar sets but they work fine for
Clansman too if sidetone is used for the microphone check since on mine at
least the LED microphone indicator only works for some kinds of headset -
probably depending on whether the headgear has a transformer internally.

Much better value than the official Clansman test box and much more
convenient being self contained with a PP3 battery. I think I have a photo
on a memory card waiting to be added to my Clansman web site. I will try to
get it done this weekend.

Jim VE3DDY,

?

Thanks for sharing the experience.? The board is being designed and I think I will change the colour of the casing either black or champaign gold which is too ‘ugly’ or too unusual to look military. ?In addition, I think it is also important to show professionalism and determination by us amateur radio operators to restrict the set within hambands and also to present and verify the result to convince the authority.? At least they said they are prepared to consider if the operational frequency can be restricted within hambands.? Fortunately radio of that era has a much more straight forward and elegant design which result in a highly modifiable rig.

James, I obtained a Syncal 30 while on active service in Africa and had similar problems as you do.
There is always some officious little ZIT of a civil servant who wants to show off and put further restrictions on the Radio Amateur. Even though you have the ability to build a set that works outside the HAm bands and have the capability to demonstrate that any equipment you operate is confined by your ability to operate within the ham bands.
The first thing I did was to remove the radio from it's box and put it in a "Civilian looking" container that wasn't painted Olive Drab.
On inspection it was hardly given a glance.

For Sale: military hand-held computer

Particularly applicable for those of you with restored military vehicles with mortar or light artillery connections, or Hewlett-Packard or vintage computer hardware collectors:

Zengrange "GUNZEN computer, Artillery Fire Data". Believed to still be in service for calculating mortar and artillery settings, small hand-held unit based on Hewlett-Packard HP-41 hardware (if not sold, will be advertised on HP Collectors forums next week). Waterproof, and extremely well shock-protected by flip-top diecast case and rubber internal surround, has ROM modules fitted in three of the four ROM slots.

Appears to be in full working order, but no documentation.

?60, could post at cost.

A friend of mine recently had the same problem in Africa where the Government person was concerned that the radio could be used by Terrorists. My friend pointed out that Terrorists don't use such cumbersome equipment but use Cell phones and the computer / internet.
He also pointed out that even the Civil servant was carrying a cell phone .
I hope you get the problem sorted out but be advised, because the rig is olive drab in colour it will always be suspect by those people.

Hi Scot and all who responded,

The MA925 synthesizer board manual and discussion with my fellow ham Jeff Yeo reveals that it is relatively easy to limit the operation to comply to the ham band. It will be by means of reading data input ML 2, 6, 9, 11 and 13 (ref table 2 in pg 2-4 part 3 and table 3 in pg 2-5 part 3 in the MA925 manual) then compare these to a table of values representing the frequencies within ham bands, then enable ptt if the comparison generates a true status, disable ptt if false status is generated. This reading and comparing can be achieved by means of a small customed made microprocessor installed into the radio with relatively straight forward 'C' program code burnt into an Eprom to read and compare values.
Guess the problem is solved and marriage to Miss Greenie (Syncal 30) saved ; )

Royal Signals Radio Week-end at Blandford Forum, Dorset UK

BRILLIANT concept - why didnt Royal Signals think of that before??
(Mind you some of us did try to run something similar a few years ago over the Corps weekend at the end of June each year)

One question to ask is who is it aimed at, as I assume, the Museum is running it as an attraction to bring the public in????
If we are the public who are to be attracted, and are already there, what is the benefit, one asks, unless we are expected to pay for entrance and this seems unlikely given what you have said in your first email.

Lets give them all the encouragement we can, and support the idea.

Can we get the Royal Signals Amateur Radio Societty involved (RSARS) that could provide a major additional attraction, particularly if a typical radio rally was added on here.

Dates are going to be the big problem, but encouraging people to come over long distances will also be a major feature, so my suggestion is to see if we cannot combine with something else that will attract radio collectors:

Suggestions:? The Corps weekend which is already a major attraction on a Saturday in June
????????????????????????? The Flight Refuelling Rally at Wimborne which is already an attraction on a Sunday in August
????????????????????????? Choose a weekend date that is not already booked by another Radio Rally and have a real open air rally on the Sunday, like Newbury or Dunstable Downs.

(thought??? Was the former Rally at Longleat ever? replaced elsewhere?? This could be such a replacement, perhaps?)

Run this event over three days (Friday to Sunday) to make it more worthwhile for those taking part who can spend the entra day on site.? This will allow then to visit the museum as well as providing a public display.

(Separate I will try and collect together dates from 2010/ or likely ones for 2011)

Good Afternoon Squad

Please read this article carefully and respond to me as appropriate. This promises to be a good week-end with plenty of scope for development in the future.

Royal Signals Museum Radio Week-end

The Museum is envisaging running a Radio Week-end at Blandford Camp, in association with the local Amateur Radio Club, The Blackmore Vale Amateur Radio Society, with myself, Tony, G4BCX, as linkman. The objective is to provide the opportunity for collectors of military radio equipment and vehicles to demonstrate their equipment in an organised and friendly environment, with the potential for a large audience.
The most important thing at this stage is to arrange a date, and we would look to finalise this point early in November this year. Once this is done, the Museum can then negotiate with the School of Signals to provide facilities. They will negotiate to provide parking, display areas, shop and toilet facilities, "pay as you dine" in the Regimental Restaurant, AC Mains, common antenna working, and such other facilities that would enhance the attractiveness for the week-end. There could possibly be a sale of Museum surplus and even a bring-and-buy facility. Naturally we can only give outline indications at this stage.
The area around the Garrison affords some very interesting locations for Families, and also some excellent territory for those who might wish to go mobile or portable, once having located at the camp. Should there be interest in this direction, base stations on 80, 6 and 4 metres can easily be organised.
This is primarily a "Museum Show Week-end", with military connotations, and so one of the stipulations is that Civilian Vehicles/Caravans/Gazebo's/Tents etc. would need to be covered with cam-nets. The Museum may be able to offer limited help in this direction. Military uniforms, vehicles, and a wide range of radios, with plenty of them working, are the centre-piece of the show. The Museum Business Manager will look to negotiate with people on an individual basis regarding help with fuel. Naturally "one-off" vehicles and radios will be given priority. Perhaps people could negotiate with each other in order to prioritise variety in displays, and share transport.
Blackmore Vale have already indicated to me that they favour August. May I ask you all, individuals and Societies, to consider the above, and let me have your ideas on the subject. I can be reached by telephone on 01752 296747, by e-mail on tony.helm@...

Its probably going to be the public who, for one reason or another, cannot collect the amount of gear they are interested in.
?
Just because a few of us have the odd bit of kit or three there are folk out there who would like to see more of this kit.
?
The museum does have quite a bit of British kit, so I guess just turning up with yet another 19 set might not really help so hopefully folk like Tony can bring Russian gear, I have a few bits of Japanese gear (WW2 military not modern plastic), others might have American, German etc etc.
?
That way, those poor folk who attend rallies bemoaning the fact they can't buy a thing due to the trouble and strife can at least get to see it, hi.
?
Dates I feel would be the tricky bit.
?
cheers, Ben. G4BXD.

Dear Group

Photos of the modules and the antenna are posted in the Group's Photos section titled : PRC-77

Have for sale PRC-77 parts and antenna in NOS ( never used ) condition from around 1970s. they are vintage :)

These merchandise are almost three decades old and just sitting dusty in my warehouse which is somewhere in my backyard :)

Our firm used to sell strictly via military and government contract only. Once the contract is over, we are left with these merchandise as overstocks. we are more than happy to clean them out for a reasonable price.

These merchandise were imported directly from the USA and yes they are manufactured there. During the time - 1970s, only the USA has the ability to provide this type technology. we have legit documents to prove it.

Once the contracts expire so does the firm, so don't bother looking for our website - we don't have any and most probably never will.

Photos of the modules and the antenna are posted in the Group's Photos section titled : PRC-77

these are the only merchandise i have - nothing more - and this is a simple trade as such on ebay and stuffs. should a deal be concluded then you are most welcomed for a prior shipment inspection.

thank you and best regards
