hAS anybody used the Lidl ones?
My experience is that they dont seem to hold a good charge for long

The AAA and AA ones seem particularly bad - or have I wrecked them by soldering wire to the terminals?

Have installed a 320 in the backpack, all was well till battery went low quick. It was one I'd re-celled with 4000mH C cells but found 2 were oddly down when on load.

Off load they read ok but as soon as I put a load on the pack two of the cells went into reverse!. I have replaced them but only with 1200mA ones as that's all I have handy at the moment.

Looking at these 9000mA Ni-Mh cells from China, they would make a nice pack up so might try them next.

These 4000mA ones were from Lidl, they had an offer on for AAA, AA, C and D of which I bought quite a few. I think my AAA and AA are ok, the D's I have used in various sets but only a couple of charges and these C cells I put into a Racal battery box as getting the D's in without tags etc?is near impossible.
?
Still, they were cheap so that has to tell you something !

FW: Clark mast for sale

Dear All

I have a Clark 15M light duty mast surplus to requirements and would like
to offer it to you before resorting to e-Bay.

The mast is a "Surveyor 15M" I bought from Telford Electronics at the
Picketts Lock rally in the mid 1990s and is 15M tall when extended, 3.5M
tall retracted and has a 4.5 inch base tube with a 25mm antenna socket at
the top. The main tube weighs about 110lb and the legs must be almost as
much again. I believe the Surveyor is closely related to the Clark PT mast
series although the clamps are more like a SCAM40.

The mast was last fully extended in February 2010 after I replaced a stuck
locking collar - it probably could do with some refurbishment because it
does not stay up long without the locking collars, but is still easily
pumped up with a car compressor.

Please have a look at:

Unfortunately I then tried to remove the air in socket to clean off the
rust and found that I had stripped the thread - so it will need drilling
out and a (13mm?) Hellicoil inserting. You can buy replacement air in
socket and hose on e-bay for ?15 - see item 170530328596. It is also
possible to hand-extend it with light head loads.

Since I now have other masts that are stronger and short enough to fit my
car I and have limited time to work on it I am offering this for one for
sale as-is for refurbishment, spares or repair and would be interested in
offers over ?250.

Please contact me on 07850 424 007 or at g0ozs@... to arrange
viewing or to make an offer ! I would prefer to have it out of the way by
the end of the month so will accept the best offer over ?250 (which I am
sure I can get on e-bay) received by 30th September 2010.

The mast is too heavy to take down safely single handed and I do not have a
car with a roof rack now, so it is strictly buyer to inspect and collect.
Because of the need to dismantle I think courier collection is impractical.
I am located between Ipswich and Colchester in East Anglia about 3 miles
from the A12 and 5 miles from the A14.

Regards

Iain

Possible scam warning

Hi, All,

I'm now receiving a message similar to the following at least once a day. All attempts to contact the sender have resulted in no response, and I suspect it may be a prelude to an attempted scam. All emails are identical with the exception of, in the example below, the word "Manuals", but this always has an additional leading space character, the "i am located" always has a lower-case "i", there is always a missing space character before "Do", and the item advertised is always referred to as "he".

The information has also been passed to Gmail but has so far not produced any response.

If Ms.Wilson has a legitimate reason for making these postings I apologise, and I'm sure we would all love to hear it.

regards,

Bob

MA4010 High speed morse units on eBay

If anyone is thinking about making an offer on the rather over priced units going round on ebay, be aware that the Audio connectors are not the standard ones but the 8 pin French (?) kind, so the usual handsets and keys cannot be used. I had a similar unit and converted it back to the standard connectors but it was mechanically really hard to do and not a task I would wish on anyone. I think I paid more for the two connectors than I paid for the whole unit.

Clever design though.

For Sale: Military Communications 1988/89

Hi, All,

I've decided to sell my copy of the Interavia Data publication "Military Comms 1988/89". For those of you who haven't come across it, this is the military comms industry standard reference book, printed in two volumes with a total of 1900 pages, and taking up 120mm of bookshelf space!

Unlike Jane's, this publication has no illustrations, but has more comprehensive detail about purchasers/users of each individual equipment item. It is also cross-referenced in a number of ways including by User, so that it is possible, for instance, to see which equipment might have been contemporary with a vehicle in a particular country's service. The description of each item is similar to entries in Janes.

?35 - I could consider posting but it is obviously fairly heavy. I'm located in Worcestershire.

regards,

Bob

Re: PRM-4051 PSK31 Interface

Iain G. Moffat

Ian

I am not sure if the Racal branded sets behave the same way as the Clansman ones with regard to PTT (My Racal experience is RT350 and R351/2). If so beware that the G8TXJ design has a 1.5K potentiometer on the radio side of the microphone transformer, and Clansman sets are keyed by a 1.6K impedance between microphone and mic ground - some also support PTT to ground and the Clansman headsets have a DPST PTT which makes both connections.

Provided the station you are working is near the middle of the audio band in the PSK31 waterfall display - say 1 to 1.5KHz - I think more or less any SSB set should work well - the issue will filtering if there is one will be if you don't tune the radio to center the wanted station and instead try to work stations near the edge of the waterfall. I am planning to try PSK on my RT320 soon so will find out if that's a good theory !

If this is the case for the PRM4051 you will need to add a capacitor or wire the relay to disconnect the Mic circuit when the radio is not keyed if you use the G8TXJ circuit as printed,

PRM-4051 PSK31 Interface

Having read the excellent article in this month's Radcom from G8TXJ regarding the VOX operated PSK31 interface I am wondering if it would be compatable with my PRM-4051. Would the 600ohm transformers be a suitable match for the i/p and o/p audio circuits on the '4051 ? Does anyone have some details as to the levels and impedances required by the '4051 (they must be the same as the Syncal TRA-931 as they use the same standard Racal handset) ?
I was going to omit the USB soundcard included in G8TXJ's design for simplicity, just using the soundcard in my PC.
Have any list members tried PSK31 on a Racal manpack using the audio circuits, will the audio filtering within the set be unsuitable for data modes ? All thoughts gratefully received.

Good afternoon, Nico,

just read your message re above.
I have the smaller brother, the TRA 921 (2 - 8 MHz, synthesizer). In the
copy of the manual which I have there is also a section covering the TRA
922, which features a 49 channel crystal oscillator. In case it may help, I
will give you some details about that:

"Five channel oscillator circuits are fitted, and each is provided with ten
crystals (nine crystals in the case of oscillator No. 1), one of which is
selected by the 'digits' channel switch. One of the five oscillators is
activated by the 'tens' channel switch, thus bringing the selected
oscillator, with its selected crystal, into circuit. A clarifier provides
fine control of the channel oscillator frequency, and thus adjusts both the
transmit and receive frequencies.

A separate oscillator and amplifier is fitted to provide the 10.7 MHz
output. This output is muted when A.M. VOICE reception is used."

"CHANNEL CRYSTALS
A crystal is fitted for each of the required channels. The crystal frequency
required equals operating frequency plus 10.7 MHz, i.e. if Channel 3 is to
operate at 2.587 MHz, then a crystal of 13.287 MHz must be inserted in the
No. 3 Position."

This 49 channel crystal oscillator is called MA 923. Perhaps yours is
similar?

Best rgds.,
Peter, DC6BN+
