Thank you for speaking up and letting us know this is happening.
As for me I hope we can save the files etc for the future. Including your incredible work that both of you have contributed. The tree would be a big loss. Peter shared ancestry HX that would be a big loss.?
This news is new for me. Perhaps for others here as well. With every group scattering in different directions our opportunity to learn more is diminishing. That is a huge loss.?
You both have weighed in with ideas. I’d defer to each of you as the experts on S6881. I have two Y700 kits but I don’t know what to do with the data.?
Why is this happening? Why is Yahoo dropping the groups???

Hi Cynthia, I believe you should be able to save anything you want from the files section and maybe from the other sections too. I haven't tried it but I can do it in other Yahoo Groups. Save away and if it was something that I posted that you want I can always send it to you. It has been a sudden notice that they are shutting down parts of the Yahoo Groups but I guess not really unexpected. Yahoo was bought by Verizon awhile back and I guess they don't want to support the server space it takes to keep the files and archive the conversations. They do say we can still use the email functions of the groups but there won't be any site to go to to read the old emails and have files and such as I understand. If you have your Y-700 data still upload it to the Big Tree that Alex does. I can help you with that if you need it. It does still show us pretty much where we fall on the tree in relation to each other and I find that important as with FTDNA once you exceed the 30 SNP difference you can no longer see your match. I lost sight of many matches and this is the only place I can still see them. There are options to where to move to (some went to Facebook, others went to groups.io) and we could do that. But I don't know if there is enough interest in this group to move forward. Do enough people want to or are people content with the other sources they have? That would be my question. Hi Cynthia, I'm not sure which bigger picture you are referring to. Bigger picture of what is happening with Yahoo Groups or a bigger picture of a Y-700 update? Well, it seems that "Yahoo Groups" is closing down to just an email list,
with nothing saved in "Groups." Existing Files, Photos, Conversations, will
all disappear December 14.
So what do we want to do? I can store the files on my website, and give
you-all a link, but the information is all over a year old - and nothing
from Y-700 testing.
Have we lost Iain's future insights? Do we have anything else to share?
Should we each just download what we need and call it quits?

I'll admit to being behind in bringing this up. Mostly because I have no
idea what the group wants to do. There are choices but they will probably
face the same issues that those choices did for all the other groups in the
process of moving. We can go to groups.io I guess but it isn't a free
service. We can go to Facebook but I know lots of people don't like that.
We can keep the email portion of the group but have no files. Or we can
drop the whole thing. What does anyone want to do? I still keep a
spreadsheet of where everyone is in the tree but I have a more difficult
time now that I moved my kit to Y-700. I lost over half my matches and
that's pretty much how I kept our big group tree up to date. Does anyone
feel like they are missing it? Do you get enough from the Block Tree that
FTDNA has? I, personally, prefer Alex's Big Tree but he's sounding like
he's going to quit supporting it. Anyone have any opinions they would like
to express on this? Speak up because we really do have to make some sort of
decision. Iain keeps saying he's going to get back to his Aging but I guess
life keeps getting in the way. Thanks, Jim. for bringing this up so we can
discuss it.
