Hi All, ? Since Yahoo is going to pretty much end groups I'm going to attempt to move this group to like the U106 group did and some other genetics groups did. It may take me a little time as it isn't a real quick process. It is possible you may not want to continue on with the group after the move but for now I'm going to attempt to move the whole group just like it is. We'll see how well it all comes across and if you don't want to continue that is fine. There is a group of people who do want to continue on so we'll get at least this step done so we can go on. Thanks for all your support and involvement in the past.

Hi Cynthia, I'm not sure which bigger picture you are referring to. Bigger picture of what is happening with Yahoo Groups or a bigger picture of a Y-700 update? I worked on Grady's results and I'm almost finished. I'll share it with you soon. Chris On Sat, Oct 26, 2019 at 1:36 PM Cynthia Sexton prosperity200220815@... [R1b-S6881] <R1b-S6881@...> wrote:

There are choices but they will probably face the same issues that those choices did for all the other groups in the process of moving. We can go to groups.io I guess but it isn't a free service. We can go to Facebook but I know lots of people don't like that. We can keep the email portion of the group but have no files. Or we can drop the whole thing. What does anyone want to do? I still keep a spreadsheet of where everyone is in the tree but I have a more difficult time now that I moved my kit to Y-700. I lost over half my matches and that's pretty much how I kept our big group tree up to date. Does anyone feel like they are missing it? Do you get enough from the Block Tree that FTDNA has? I, personally, prefer Alex's Big Tree but he's sounding like he's going to quit supporting it. Anyone have any opinions they would like to express on this? Speak up because we really do have to make some sort of decision. Iain keeps saying he's going to get back to his Aging but I guess life keeps getting in the way. Thanks, Jim. for bringing this up so we can discuss it.

Have we lost Iain's fine insights on the age of our SNPs? Is there any more to share? Any more side-branches to add to the tree? Is FTDNA closed down, so that there is no more to learn? (rhetorical question)

Hi Cynthia, I believe you should be able to save anything you want from the files section and maybe from the other sections too. I haven't tried it but I can do it in other Yahoo Groups. Save away and if it was something that I posted that you want I can always send it to you. It has been a sudden notice that they are shutting down parts of the Yahoo Groups but I guess not really unexpected. Yahoo was bought by Verizon awhile back and I guess they don't want to support the server space it takes to keep the files and archive the conversations. They do say we can still use the email functions of the groups but there won't be any site to go to to read the old emails and have files and such as I understand. If you have your Y-700 data still upload it to the Big Tree that Alex does. I can help you with that if you need it. It does still show us pretty much where we fall on the tree in relation to each other and I find that important as with FTDNA once you exceed the 30 SNP difference you can no longer see your match. I lost sight of many matches and this is the only place I can still see them. There are options to where to move to (some went to Facebook, others went to groups.io) and we could do that. But I don't know if there is enough interest in this group to move forward. Do enough people want to or are people content with the other sources they have? That would be my question. Dear Chris and Jim,
Thank you for speaking up and letting us know this is happening.
As for me I hope we can save the files etc for the future. Including your incredible work that both of you have contributed. The tree would be a big loss. Peter shared ancestry HX that would be a big loss.
This news is new for me. Perhaps for others here as well. With every group scattering in different directions our opportunity to learn more is diminishing. That is a huge loss.
You both have weighed in with ideas. I’d defer to each of you as the experts on S6881. I have two Y700 kits but I don’t know what to do with the data.
Why is this happening? Why is Yahoo dropping the groups??

Dear Chris and Jim,
Thank you for speaking up and letting us know this is happening.
As for me I hope we can save the files etc for the future. Including your incredible work that both of you have contributed. The tree would be a big loss. Peter shared ancestry HX that would be a big loss.?
This news is new for me. Perhaps for others here as well. With every group scattering in different directions our opportunity to learn more is diminishing. That is a huge loss.?
You both have weighed in with ideas. I’d defer to each of you as the experts on S6881. I have two Y700 kits but I don’t know what to do with the data.?
Why is this happening? Why is Yahoo dropping the groups???

The U106 group has gone (is going) to?. The new group is set up, though the old one isn’t quite dead yet. Given the amount of traffic here I suggest using the existing U106 group at??(I guess most of us are already members of u106).

Dear Jim Liptrot and Chris Noble,
I have not been following this news about Yahoo disallowing uploads and deleting historic postings. ?I see that there are various suggestions about continuing. ? Do you know what proposals there are from Iain McDonald, Chris Noble and the other leaders of the group ? ? What would be the most important historic postings to save or transfer to a new group ? ? Much of the group discussion is too technical for me to understand but I do follow the general trend especially the periodic overview explanations from Iain McDonald and would be reluctant to lose contact. ?
Kind regards, ? Peter Latham.?

Chris,
First, you’ve been on my mind for a long time. Like with you life here is so demanding. I apologize for the delay.
I’m a bit sad about what is happening to the U106 group. Seems it is ending or they’ve taken their conversation elsewhere leaving the group to disintegrate slowly. I had thought the push to Y700 would be exciting instead seems the results just drop into little to mild interest.
Maybe I’ve not been following closely enough so I thought I’d ask you for your insights. Am I way off on this???

I saw Grady must have gotten his results as he has disappeared as a match to my kit. I lost over half of my matches. How many did you lose? I no longer can see a good portion of our S6881 BigY group. Kind of sad. But my kit only gained one new unnamed variant (which FGC had called out all those years ago but FTDNA didn’t). So that isn’t what lost me my matches. It’s a whole bunch of named SNPs (mostly BY types) that were never called out on my kit before that is doing it. So many that I now have over 30 mismatches (the magic cutoff) with half the group so they are now invisible to me. I think many of them are not good SNPs as they don’t show on FTDNA’s tree. I’m hoping it gets cleaned up and I get people back again. I lost one of my closest matches but still have a match to a guy who isn’t even S6881! It’s crazy. So look over your mismatching variants if you kept records on what they used to be. You’ve probably gained a few. You probably won’t have anything change on your kit unless they find a new SNP on you and another close match. Otherwise we just wait for new closer testers to come along. And for FTDNA to check out the plethora of weird SNPs they are calling out on our kits. In the meantime upload your .vcf file to the Data Warehouse for the Big Tree. At least there you can see everyone and you can see if they find anything different.? Chris

Hi Chris,
Grady’s Y700 results are in. Sadly I see no new information. Maybe when others results post(?) .
Your thoughts on that? If any.
Thank you

It's because STRs mutate randomly back and forth. So they can return to a value they had in the past and then go forward again, or not. SNPs only mutate forward. Your descendants will continue to pass on the mutations you passed to them. Not so much with STRs. So STRs suggest a relationship, SNPs prove it. My closest STR match is many SNPs different from my kit. That was disappointing.
William is part of this project (S6881 and U106). And William and Grady share an ancestor back at a possible time maybe just before surnames. Depends on when they were forced to adopt one. So that could also be the reason for the difference.?

Thank you for that Chris. It helps. It also activated another question.
Can you make any sense of this...
Roy is more closely related to Wm. C. Latham than Grady via STRs
Grady is more closely related to WCL than Roy via SNPs including sharing what had been a private SNP.
How does that happen and what does it teach us?? I know that the SNPs are the boss as being more reliable. Yes?
Y 700...
Grady’s dna is in the lab, yay!
Roy was late in getting his sample in.
I hope I can get WCL here if he is not a part of this project. It would mean a lot to our progress toward surname discovery. Graves vs Latham. No clue..

Hi Cynthia, ?? I'm not sure who all is upgrading but I don't think all that many. I've lost the ability to see at least half of the BigY matches I could see before. If a BigY match is also one of your STR matches you'll still be able to see them there when you get your test results and you can see if on the "Big Y STR Differences" column they show around 600 STRs. Those are going to be your Y700 people. I think that's the only way you'll be able to tell. I've lost Roy but still have Grady as a BigY match. We'll see how that changes when they get their results.
I've never talked to the admin of the Latham project. But I can speak to having a place name. It does cause a lot of unrelated people but probably not any worse than an occupational name (Baker, Smith, Taylor, Weaver) or a geographical location (Brooks, Bridge, Forest), etc. You are going to get a lot of unrelated people but within that you will probably get groups who are related. Interestingly enough there is a place called Lathom in Lancashire.

Hi Chris,
Do you know if most of the s6881 folks have upgraded to Y 700? Both Roy and Grady are awaiting results. I can no longer see the members. I’m wondering about Wm C Latham. Is he still listed here? I’m amazed by how many Lathams we connect with.
I reached out to the admin of the Latham project. He told me that the name is a place name and that most of the folks in his project are not related. Any thoughts or suggestions you might have on that? I wonder if he knows about this project. Have you ever reached out to him?

Hi Jim,
Wow was that SO helpful. Thank you for sharing those big picture charts with me. Incredible. Both charts are so well and clearly laid out. I needed to be able to ‘see’ it. Perfectly done!
Much new learning for me to achieve and much to also catch up on.

Thank you Ray!!
I’ve been away for so long that my brain has to catch up again. It’s like starting all over in the dna way of thinking things through. I’m so grateful for your generous and kind responses. All very helpful.
Ray I’m amazed by how much progress you’ve made for your project over the last few years. I was on your website to read about more of your findings. Impressive how well organized your genetic and genealogical data is laid out.
Wishing you the best Cynthia
