Economical Satellite Messaging

Economical Satellite Messaging

For those that may find themselves in no cell AND no radio areas, this new satellite messaging device can be a great solution for safety and check-in needs. The economics are quite reasonable compared to other SAT options.

It connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth so you can use the messaging app.? HOWEVER, it can "ping" its location WITHOUT a smartphone also. That is a major feature!

Re: RAH, Radios At Home - Saturday, June 17th

The Radios At Home event that was held on Saturday, June 17th was very successful. We had a good number of participants that included quite a few new stations, a remote operations contact in Utah and a SOTA contact 84 miles away in Prescott. I would like to start working on a log that can be made available on the web so that people can go review the results of the events. I'm asking that anyone who was involved in the event and kept a log to please email me the information with your call sign and the call signs of those that you had contact with as well as any other pertinent information like station specifics, location, signal report, etc. Please send that information to my email at my call sign KI7PPW@.... Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the new Technician Class study guide from KB6NU. It is great for self-study and available from the Queen Creek Amateur Radio Club website:

Another reminder: The FCC fees for new licenses began on April 19, 2022. The good news is that the new FCC fee of $35 DOES NOT apply to upgrade your license class

Something new:
Free study materials for General Class and Amateur Extra Class are also available at the Queen Creek Amateur Radio Club website:

Note: The General Class study materials have been updated to support the new question pool that becomes active on July1, 2023 and valid through June 30, 2027.

RAH, Radios At Home - Saturday, June 17th

RAH, Radios At Home
Another season of "Radios Under Sun Shade" (RUSS) has ended. As we get into much warmer temperatures, it's time once again for "Radios At Home" (RAH) to return.

Radios@Home was initially introduced by Heidi K7ZAE when RUSS was sidelined due to the COVID pandemic that hit the US in 2020. It was designed to keep us all ¡°radio-active¡± even though we couldn¡¯t get out to the parks due to public area closures and social distancing requirements.

These days¡..

Simply stated, it's the same RUSS activities but at home in the comfort of refrigeration (what some of you refer to as air conditioning). It is mostly an individual activity since it is at home but you can certainly invite fellow hams and guests to participate with you. The objective is to continue exercising our stations and skill set on a regular basis despite the Arizona heat (which some of you refer to as inferno). Operating off-grid power is still encouraged.

Heidi has turned over the reins of this event to John, KI7PPW, who is well known to us as the venerable host of the Maricopa County New Ham Operator's Net on Thursday evenings and the very frequent guest Net Control Operator of the Queen Creek Emergency Group's Training Net on Sunday evenings.

One very important item that has been changed is the duration of the event. To give more folks the opportunity to participate, the duration is now 4 hours - from 10 AM to 2 PM local time. That should give folks with morning commitments a chance to possibly participate in the early afternoon.

Here are details for your calendars:
? When: Third Saturday of every month, from 10 AM till 2 PM
? Where: 146.460 MHz Simplex (T-Encode/Decode 77 Hz optional), 446.000 MHz and at 7.178 MHz LSB for those with HF stations.
? What: Log as many contacts as possible and please be courteous to others that wish to make contacts and move to another frequency if you are having an extended QSO.
? Why: The objective is to exercise on a regular basis our stations and skill set, operating preferably off-grid if possible.
? Who: Any licensed amateur radio operator directly and / or acting as a control station operator for non-hams.

Questions? Comments? Contact John, KI7PPW, at ki7ppw@....

Arizona Grand Hams group is looking for local HF contacts!

On behalf of the Arizona Grand Hams group - Joe, N2QOJ

Arizona Grand Hams group is looking for local HF contacts!

This HF net meets every Thursday at 4 PM (1600 Hours)

7.180 MHz (40 Meters) or 21.430 MHz (15 Meters)

This is a rag chew net! It is a round robin format.
?
The Arizona Grand Hams HF SSB Net meets today at 16:00 on 7.180 Mhz (40 meters).? It's a busy band however if any QRM bothers us, we will move a little higher up.? We don't want to go below 7.175 since any General Class folks can't go below that per FCC rule.

Our intent is to learn if we can attract more folks to the Net who are a little further out from Sun City Grand and Sun City West.? We have fun with casual conversations with many varied topics.
?
This net sometimes meets at 21.430 MHz.

ARA Survey: Utah Link Full Time on Northlink

Good Day, Members -

There is a proposed project to link several ARA repeaters around the state, and in the Valley, to repeaters in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Nevada.

This link would be active 24/7 and would not rely on Internet infrastructure.? If you feel this would be useful to our ham community, and are in favor of it, please take the survey at the following link:

?

Also, this is the link to the AZ ARA repeaters that would be in the link:

International Space Station Visible Tonight (7 minutes!)

Folks - Good news!

Another opportunity to spot the International Space Station this evening as it passes over our area in Arizona. It should be a great pass and hopefully the clouds will be minimal. It will pass about 77 degrees above the horizon!

Treat your family and friends to a viewing of the International Space Station tonight. I find that even the most non-technical family member or friend gets a kick out of seeing the station as it moves across the sky at 17,150 MPH - that's 4.76 miles per second - and about 250 miles above us.

If you are an amateur radio operator, take the opportunity to relate how us hams can communicate directly with the ISS or through one of its transponders. The ISS will be visible for 7 minutes and should be a good viewing and becomes visible directly from the Southwest and disappears towards the Northeast.

Time: Sun May 14 7:54 PM
Visible: 7 min
Max Height: 77¡ã
Appears: 10¡ã above SW (from 225 degrees)
Disappears: 10¡ã above NE (toward 45 degrees)

I've also attached an illustration that will help you determine how to use this information. You can watch and track the station in advance at this link:

And, something new! I've attached a chart of the actual pass.

Remember, these times are based on a viewing site from the Mesa area (and within 50 miles). If you would like to generate times from your specific city or town, visit this link and follow the instructions. If your specific city or town isn¡¯t listed, pick the closest one:

The space station is visible for at least a 50 mile (80 km) radius around each of the listed locations.

If you are an amateur radio operator, listen in (or work) on these frequencies:

Voice and SSTV Downlink: 145.80 (Worldwide)
Voice Uplink: 144.49 for ITU Regions 2 and 3
VHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 145.825 (Worldwide) - easiest to hear
UHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 437.550
UHF/VHF Repeater Uplink: 145.990 (67Hz PL Tone)
UHF/VHF Repeater Downlink: 437.800
