FYI for Mac Users

I just ran across this article on Ars Technica about the recent Mac OS 14.4 update breaking a bunch of things. As brittle as the Epson/Apple printer relationship seems to be, I would be wary of updating until some of these things get resolved:

I upgraded to OS 14.x last November and can attest that the Apple/Epson relationship is strained if not broken. ?Immediately after upgrade, I lost most of the functionality of the print driver for my P600. ?Several hours with both Epson and Apple tech produced no positive results. ?I ended up purchasing a third party driver to avoid buying a new printer.

Agree with Clay and Gary. I upgraded my Mac Studio to Sonoma and like Gary lost most of the functions of my print drivers. I finally reverted back to Ventura, which has also been troublesome in printing. Thankfully I still have an old Mac Pro with Mojave that prints perfectly so I have shifted all of my printing back to it.

Too late for me... I had no idea I'd lose functionality of Quad Tone RIP for Piezography fine-art B&W printing using my 2012 iMac earlier this year. I plan to get it down-graded to Mojave ASAP (without losing everything on its hard-drive, I hope) and never upgrade the OS again, keeping the old computer just for printing, unless QTR ever gets updated again.?

something to consider. I use an old Mac mini i3 running Mojave to print from. It's headless. but I see old Macbooks on FB marketplace for $150.00. You can get one of those to print from. I do my editing on a more up to date computer then access the other Mac via screen share and drag my image over there and print from print tools running off that Mac. It's a lot simpler than having to struggle with getting this stuff to run consistently with Seqouia etc...

Does that mean that Monterey/12 and earlier is ok? What about El Capitan/10 ?? (I am very new to mac after 40 years on PC)
?

Thank you for sharing this article, Clay.

Unfortunately, this is very timely for me, as both my iMac and MacBook Pro have been affected, despite neither being upgraded to the latest OS.

Firstly, I noticed last week?that my USB hub connected?to my iMac refuses to read my card reader on a specific socket, even though the same socket reads other devices without issue.?
I tested the card reader, and it works fine—it’s just this particular socket on the hub that has the problem.

Secondly (and more critically), I’ve encountered communication errors (connected via WiFi) between my Epson P800 printer and my MacBook Pro.?
It was working perfectly until last Friday, but now my MacBook Pro recognises the printer yet refuses to send file data to it.?
Interestingly, when I connected the printer via a WiFi hotspot on my mobile, it worked fine.?
I also tested the printer using my partner's laptop and didn’t encounter any issues there.

The current OS versions are:

iMac: macOS 12.7.5 (Monterey)
MacBook Pro: macOS 13.2.1 (Ventura)

Based on these tests, I suspect the issue isn’t solely caused by upgrading to macOS 14.4.

Hello molte@
?
I am currently running Epson 7800,9800, and P900 with the QTR 2.8.0 with Print-Tool -2.3.4 on an older 2014 Mac Mini 2.6hrz running macOS Monterey 12.7.6.
Printing digital negatives.
They will never be connected to the internet for any upgrades again.?
All is currently running smooth (fingers crossed).?
Good Luck!
Shane Knight

?I stuck with Monterey for years dreading the day when I would be forced to upgrade my O.S. A few months ago, I bit the bullet and upgraded to Sequoia. After a bit of work, nothing too technical, I have been printing successful Epson P900 printing digital negatives with QTR, and PrintTool. All of Richard Boutwell's applications work too.

Good work Tony! Would you mind sharing what you did to get things working?
?
cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris. Not much really. I moved from Monterey to Sequoia in one step and everything worked fine. I checked that the original print driver (12.65) for my P-900 was working and it was ok and not that damned Apple AirPrint version! PrintTool worked fine too. However, it did take me some time to get my Quadfiles for QTR to install. I wish I could remember what I did, but after a couple of hours frustration, they turned up as profiles in my QTR print menu.

Cheers ? Tony McLean

Are you able to save QTR print settings, and recall them successfully? That seems to be the main functionality that people lose when upgrading to the newer Mac OS's.
