DVAP VHF Dongle

Hi everyone.

Just joined the group.

Wonder if anyone is using?the DVAP VHF Dongle (the red one) with the QnetGateway?

Looking at buying one as a base for a VHF higher powered, high elevation hotspot.

Cheers

Finn, VK4LL.

I have not tried to use QnetGateway with a DVAP, simply because I do not have one.

I can tell you that the bigger issue would be using something like a DVAP with a gain antenna at high elevation would be receiver overload. ?Tiny SoC radios with no filtering would be overwhelmed with noise in that setup, particularly on 2m which is a noisy band. ?

Setups like what you refer to are best done with an MMDVM board connected to a mobile radio for RF using the data port, or using an Icom radio with terminal mode; and the latter works flawlessly with QnetGateway.

The DVAP works well with QNET gateway, mine has been running for a few years without a glitch, the same gateway also has a zumspot running, so I have VHF and UHF on the same hotspot. Now, running any of these hotspots as quasi repeaters is a bit fraught, the receivers are pretty deaf and the transmitters are pretty dirty, As well, trying to drive a PA with the 20mW is a bit tricky and it will definitely make you unpopular if you succeed. ?So, the short answer is it can be done, but why would you do it?

I have used the red UHF DVAP dongle on DSTAR ?since about 2010 ! and now in 2024, the RF seems to be flaky. After a while, maybe several minutes ... TOOL shows the network traffic properly, but no RF in or out ...?
