Temu
?
Some of us have been buying parts and accessories from Temu and AliExpress. They often offer extremely attractive prices. But I decided not to continue their service. The AARP Bulletin I just received has a few articles about online fraud. In one of them there is a mention that “Mobile apps collect all kinds of personal info, which can put you at risk, especially in case of a data breach. For example, the popular Chinese shopping app Temu collects so much data that one state attorney general deemed it spyware.” There is also a warning that not all Amazon and eBay vendors are trustworthy. Thanks Hiroki. I have never used them yet still appreciate the warning.

We are all being tracked.? It's impossible not to be tracked unless you never do a transaction on line, only pay with cash at the store and don't use a cell phone.
?
I once searched for a particular item and found it on Temu.? Amazingly low price, reasonable quality.?
?
Then I got an email for a bonus as a new customer.? Only catch was to get the $10 bonus, I had to buy at least $10 of stuff.? Because of the low prices, that was 3 items which cost me a net of $2.
?
Then I got more emails.?? I stopped ordering and eventually the emails subsided.
?
But A* also sends me emails.? Buy more. Things I looked at but didn't order.? Things I hadn't looked at...
?
Both companies have my email, mailing address and one credit card.? Both can infer things about me based on what I have bought, but so does CVS.? I buy a bottle of aspirin.? I get email with a coupon to buy more aspirin before I have even opened the first bottle.
?
This is what I find even more disconcerting.? I go to some website where I have a login.? As a convenience, I can login with my F* account.? Why do I want Mark Z to have a record of my activity?? The answer is when F* has my info, they attract advertisers.?? People with F* accounts are not users, they are the product that F* sells.
?
I use Duck Duck Go for my search engine.? That greatly reduces the number of creepy ads.?
Also Firefox with an add-on called "NoScript".? This prevents unauthorized java scripts from soaking up MY cpu cycles and cluttering up My screen.?? Sometimes I have to enable websites to run scripts to do what I actually want to do.
?
So the AG who warned about TEMU is probably correct, but he should also go after many well known US companies.

Hi Paul, all good. To avoid tracking via my web browsing, I'm using Firefox with these extensions: UBlock Origin Privacy Badger Bypass Paywalls Clean (BPC_TEMP is the extension name) WebArchive - read archived copy of many articles With those, nearly all content is wide open, and I don't have to use NoScript.? uBlock and Privacy Badger specifically block the faceplant web beacons (1x1 pixel transparent gifs). LibreWolf is a fork of Firefox with all the privacy stuff turned on, built in.? Otherwise, users beware, gotta configure FF in several places. DDG browser has the right defaults, too.?? it's simpler (better!) but I think doesn't support extensions? Going around town, every place has video cameras these days; some run facial recognition software, some of that is illegal.? ALPRs (license plate readers) are everywhere.? <> Don't forget about the tracking in your cell phone!? That's a constant battle. So I'm doing all the above, and running APRS in my car, talking on the radio, and we're always telling each other where we are.
