I originally purchased the Alpha Loop because it seemed mechanically and electrically impressive: sealed, environmentally-rated tuning box, cool 3D printing, metal support rods, a nice stainless steel 1/4-20 mounting fixture, shielded coupling loop and a huge tuning knob. Further, they publish the SWR performance and it is rated at 100W PEP, though not sure I would trust the latter given the issues with the tuning cap. Finally, it received a 4.9/5 rating on eHam. I still think it is well built, and I trust they will work out the issue with the tuning cap (with help from me, lol). OTOH, it is not quite as portable as the AlexLoop, and the carrying bag is not as well thought out. I hope to have it a Baylands this Friday.?

The previous gen Alex Loop gets major praise IMO for at least three things: it is simple, quick to set up and take down, and it just WORKS! On 28 June, I tried out the AlexLoop I now own (thanks Joy!) at Baylands. Under marginal band condx (20M) I worked 3 POTA stations without difficulty. One was in TN, a distance of 2300? mi, and the op gave me a great report. Not bad for 3W out of a uSDX+! I trust that the current gen AlexLoop works at least as well, though I have not tried one. There was a favorable review of it in a recent QST (attached).?

Re: Friday

Hiroki,

I plan to be at there. Can you bring one of your 1N4756 Zener diodes. I checked the data sheet, and it has about 30 to 80pf when it is reverse biased. I looked at the bandpass filters on the output, most of the lower bands have capacitor values well above 50pf. It may have some impact on 10M which has an input cap close to 50pf.

Thanks, Dave W6VYC

Re: Zachtec arrived today

Yes you are right.? And they will be down in the mud, but workable if you have patience and are lucky.? Luck is a big part of it.? ?I was able to work 6 of the 13 Colonies Pota stations, but none of them have posted logs yet.? That took some patience and lots of luck.? But the thrill was worth it.? 72, Doug

I use WSPR.rocks allowing me to analyze data in various fields. ?Also can save various searches..

I can tell you from experience with SOTA/POTA that you will work the East Coast, just not very frequently.? There are some big guns out there, shooting for any SOTA/POTA points they can get their hands on.

Re: Zachtec arrived today

This was for 10 minutes using Chelegance MC-750 with resonance at 14.050 and swr of 1.13:1.? Now I have a good idea of who I can hear on Pota right now.? Probably not going to work the east coast.? Is that the right assumption?? Doug, trying to learn.

Now I? am using MC-750?

Re: Zachtec arrived today

Yes, I tuned for loudest receive signal on blt tuner, which is very? close.

No one was more shocked than I was, Cliff!? That was my own Jr High, and boy had it shrunk from 1967!? Yes, inside that concrete auditorium--unbelieveable.

It's been on 20m on the inverted L up 27ft.? and the results are astounding to me.? 4103 spots, 13 dxcc entities, and almost every state!!? All on 200mW.? Longest distance? was a VK at 14,900 km. which is about 9258 miles.? ?Amazing.? Yes it works.

Off topic but on topic from lunch last Friday. Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 Over Donner Pass

At lunch last Friday I said I was going to Auburn and we were going to see the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 make a 15 min stop at Colfax on its way from Roseville to Sparks. The schedule didn't go as planned because the "Big Boy" hit a tree on the track somewhere around Auburn and had to stop, have a repair and then continue onto Sparks. The stop at Colfax was cancelled. Big Boy ?was hours late and the great majority of the crowd, including us, were long gone. Below is a video of "Big Boy" on the tracks at various points from the other day.?
?
Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 is a BIG BOY. Big Boy weighs in at 600 tons, is 132 feet long, and can move at up to 80 miles per hour while pulling a fully loaded freight train with the force of about 7,000 hp. Union Pacific introduced the first of 25 of these steam locomotives in 1941 and retired them from active service in July 1959. ?Several 4-8-8-4 locomotives later went to museums around the United States for preservation. In 2013, Union Pacific bought back Big Boy 4014 from a museum in Pomona, California, to restore and operate. Big Boy is the world's largest ?steam locomotive.
