K7QO's QRP Lab Notebook

I don't know if you guys remember Chuck Adams presentations at the Pacificon QRP group? He is a very creative guy who can show you how to make PCBs and other QRP stuff.

Enjoy,? Dave W6VYC?

Re: Baylands tomorrow?

I made 4 contacts on 10. Japan with our friend Masa (JA1LET), a Russian on Sakhalin Island, an Air Force base in Alaska and ex-pat on the side of a volcano in Costa Rica. I heard stations in Finland, New Zealand and Australia but too much competition from stateside to be heard.?

Aaron and his son Isaac tired out my KX3. I encouraged him to send a request to QRPops. They live in Belmont and are members of the San Mateo club where they heard Hiroki's talk on loop antennas.

The weather tuned out to be windless and cool, with some sun.

I will miss next week as I have a company reunion.? Dave W6VYC

New DX from Buddipole Hex

On November 26 at the home QTH I had a qso on 10m ssb with HD8CW who was on a dxpedition in the Galapagos Islands that was sponsored by Buddipole. He was using an IC 7300 running 100 watts to a Buddipole Hexbeam and working the world……huge pile-up and all paid for by our friends at Buddipole. Hey guys there are some possibilities here. Think of an all expenses paid dx adventure to some beautiful tropical island in the far Marquesas with minimal equipment to shlep. I’m thinking of our more intrepid colleagues(are you listening Dave C, Paul Z, Hiroki?). Something to ponder perhaps.

Re: NaP3 Setup for Panadapter and Waterfall Display from QRP-Labs QMX/QMX+ Transceiver

Joy,

I have seen a video of Hans playing his favorite rock band using the QMX+ in SSB mode. This radio uses a similar architecture as KX2&3 use. It has lots of great features for a great price. I you like to wind toroids, it is a great kit. Otherwise, pay an extra $60 to get it built and tested.

Happy Thanksgiving, Dave W6VYC

Maybe the future in now!? He usually makes big announcements at Hamvention so maybe he is waiting for “Four days in May” for SSB. I hope he releases it sooner.

A Powerful Gift!

Free to a good home is a vintage Knight Kit P-2 SWR/power meter. These are simple and rugged units with many uses, 5.0/5 rating on eHam. This particular P-2 has the interesting characteristic of being hyper-sensitive. When passing 5W to a dummy load, I had to turn the sensitivity control almost all the way CCW (i.e., min sensitivity) for full-scale power meter deflection on the Forward setting. Another P-2 that I own required nearly full-CW rotation (i.e., max sensitivity) for FS reading on Forward under same condx. If I connect the gift P-2 "backwards," i.e., transmitter to antenna port and vice-versa (forward / reverse paths are symmetrical), sensitivity appears normal. Wiring appears correct and the knobs are new.?
?
Could make an interesting project or could be a "feature" for QRP ops! Any takers? Best, --David KM6RI

Howard, thanks for hosting!? we had a rollickin' great time.? folks that missed, I hope we'll have another rainy Friday some time soon.? here's links to a few things we discussed:

tonight John Portune W6NBC is talking about slot antennas at FARS.? From Steve K6OIK: "This meeting will be simulcast on Zoom.? Connection information will be posted on FARS web site shortly before the meeting at ." 730pm meeting starts.

Dave W6VYC showed a new book, intro and survey of SDR.? I missed the book title and author.?? Ah, there it is

Also showed his Hermes rig, including the software running on a Raspberry Pi 4.? I think the software is HPSDR

Dave KM6RI talked about his new W6xxx? loop antenna.? And high QRM at QTH.? everyone agreed Dave should set up the loop and use it, to find the noise source and null it out.

I'm looking forward to zooming in to the FARS meeting presentation.? slot azntennas offer a lot of physical configuration possibilities.? Cliff K6CLS
