Re: Profiling/stereotyping
Rhona et al, No, I was not "stung" at all and was actually laughing.?It was just another instance of how difficult it is to get rid of long standing prejudices. As "Avenue Q" musical puts it "Everybody is a little bit prejudiced." ? I operated at the summit of Windy Hill, although I do operate at the picnic table sometimes at the picnic table next to the south parking lot on Skyline Drive. Yes, rangers harassed us when Tim and I were there a while ago but when all the equipment is contained in a backpack it would be hard for them to do anything. Besides, if pressed legally, I don't think rangers can prevent us from operating amateur radio in open preserves. Of course, everyone is hyper-sensitive to anything "strange" and given any "official" position everyone wants to behave "important" and powerful. Carrying on in good cheer, as it seems you did, is, I think, the best answer to merely ignorant and not hostile stereotyping. A little education ("I'm here to operate my shortwave radio station.") can help complicate people's view of the world, too. I hope that the sting of their comment didn't last long. Where do you operate at Windy Hill? The one time that I parked on Skyline and operated on a high spot a little north of the parking lot, I was scolded by a ranger for not arranging a permit ahead of time. ~~Rhona, k6rho -- Rhona Mahony rmahony@... ----- Original Message -----

Anyone has a good suggestion for a situation like this? The condx was fair on 17 and 20. JAs was no problem. I also raised PY5 and V31 both on 17, albeit w 30 watts. I really feel condx has improved considerably in the past half year. Hiroki AH6CY Sent from my iPad |

Great fun today
OMs es YLs,
Tim, Neil, Northern and Southern Daves and I had lunch together and later were at Menlo Park's Bay Shore Park this afternoon. The WX was superb and while condx was not the best on 17 and 20 and 15 was not open, we had lots of fun operating and eye-ball QSOing among ourselves. The highlight came, unfortunately, after S. Dave and Neil left. Tim w. 5 watts, I w. 2.5 watts and N. Dave w 10 watts raised a UA0 station. He gave us 53, 52 and 56 respectively. We knew he was in Asian Russia. I checked his QTH when I got home. It's: Chit, Chitinskaya, Russia It is just north of Mongolia. QRP rules! 73, Hiroki AH6CY Sent from my iPad |

QRPops lunch and radio outing
Hi All,
With all the good weather lately, I thought it might be a fine time to do a little operating. What say we meet up around 11:45 on Friday, January 21st at: Los Gallos Taqueria 3726 Florence Street Redwood City, CA 94063 (650) 369-1864 (Marsh Manor shopping center) Just West of 101, off of Marsh This restaurant served great food several years ago when a bunch of us used to fly RC Gliders at Bayfront Park, where we can setup after lunch. Let's park in the first parking lot at Bayfront and hike up the tiny hill for a 360 degree view. Restrooms and water are on site. This park is just East of 101 on Marsh Road and is easy to spot. Hope to see you there, Tim, k6om 650-483-6272 cell |

Saturday setup
Hi Tim et al,
The antenna I used yesterday was a modified MP-1 vertical as you see attached. The whip that comes w the original is 4 feet long. I replaced it w a military surplus PRC-26 collapsible whip which is 10 feet long. Not only does it radiate better but also between 17 and 15 meter bands I need not change the coil position. Another mod is using 3 sets of 15 wire computer ribbon cable , totaling 45, for radials instead of the original 4 sets of 4 wires which are very easy to break. The PRC-26 is often offered on eBay for $10-20. There is one right now going for $10 plus. I hope your recovery is going smoothly. 73, Hiroki AH6CY Sent from my iPad |

Re: Jan 8 Palo Alto Bayland l'expedition result
Damn! ?Sorry i missed you. I was just thinking of asking if you were interested in a portable op today (sunday).? I had to take a cat in to the vet--she apparently had a stroke late Friday night. ?She seems to be recovered. Now waiting for some test results.? Nice to see the activity from the Bay - and congrats on the nice dx. As usual with contest weekends, I set out to participate in the NAQP with qrp /P in Mission Bay area (close to salt water surroundings) ... returned a few hrs later with 40 states in the log :) Thanks to narrow band cw and those keen contesters wanting the points, the day's /p qrp activity was a lot of fun. 40m turned out to be a great band for NA, but was also wide open to Africa dx around 03h30Z. 73 all, deon k6wh --- In QRPops@..., Tim Dolan <cyclist@...> wrote:

Re: Death Valley Rally
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Guys,I've been planning to go to Death Valley again this year too. But I also want to connect up with the artist group that regularly shows up at Texas Springs campground, so will probably go at the same time as last year... early Jan. If work pushes back my schedule, I'll try to time my trip to overlap yours. It's a blast to operate from the lowest place in N. America. Hope everyone is enjoying the holidays. 73, Neil On 12/29/2010 10:50 AM, Hiroki Kato wrote: ? --

Re: Death Valley Rally
Southern Dave, I would like to join you guys; I am flexibly available from 2/24 thru 3/10. I can drive my car if that works well. Hiroki AH6CY Sent from my iPad On Dec 28, 2010, at 10:23 AM, "w6dlf" <daveflack@...> wrote:

I'd like to go to Death Valley sometime in February or early March to
operate portable/qrp. Dave Crocker, W6VYC, and I did this last year and had a great time. I took my small RV and Dave drove. We camped in Texas Springs which is a newly updated campground near Furnace Creek. I don't have a specific time as I'm flexible. Let me know if there is interest and what time(s) would work for you. Happy New Year and 73, Dave W6DLF |
