Re: How was the Fars home brew night

The guy who chases weather balloon?transmitters got?first place for?hacking a toaster oven, by feeding a digital bitstream into the controller from an external LED controller. He made it beep in morse code.
Hiroki got second place for using stepper motors, connected in parallel, for controlling loop antenna tuning, from a distance away.?
I think third place went to the gal who gave us a talk on mesh networking, for making a Meshtastic?router, solar powered, with batteries mounted internally.
Fourth place went to a guy who made a pocket HF rig for POTA?activations.
David Varn made a power supply for ARC transmitter/receiver pairs.?
The parachute jumping guy made an Ammo Box boom-box, Bluetooth driven.
One guy made some cool antenna mach boxes.
One guy made electrostatic headphones, with a driver box containing a 300 volt power supply and?+/- 150 volt driving signals.
There was a 24 GHz transceiver.
Stiv plugged his ham connection online portal.
The Stanford Singles Club leader made a PVC/whip based vertical antenna.
There were two other loop antennas, one which will be computer tuned, eventually.
Another guy talked about a slot antenna made with copper foil wrapped like a barber pole around a PVC pipe, but it didn't work. So he proposed a double inverted V, but he got shut down for talking too long.?
Hiroki also showed his handheld TruSDR VHF handie talkie.
I'm sure there were more projects.

It was great. I missed the buffet. But there were lots of cool projects. There may have been 60 attendees.

Re: Power Supply

Elecraft is selling this PS.image.png
Preferring to produce more high performance radios, Elecraft has chosen to market the Power Werx SS30 DV 25 Amp power supply.? A compact, switch-mode power supply, the SS30DV is intended for use with both the K-Line, KX-Line and Classic Line of products.?
I bought one and I?use it with ICOM 7100, KX2, KX3. It is small and light PS perfect for portable operation.? I had Alinco, and still have Samlex, Astron and Icom power supplies. They are all good but much heavier.?

I also have the Alinco DM-330MV in my shack and it works great.?? It's very quiet. ? There's no perceptible difference operating with it versus a battery in my experience. ? It does have a birdie adjuster but I have not even encountered any birdies from it to adjust.

Re: Friday

I will see y'all at ops, then do a bike tour, and then try to crash the FARS homebrew night with a prezo on my ARC-5 (WWII surplus) project. I say "try" as I have received no replies from FARS re. my eligibility. Others have suggested simply showing up with the goodies, which is what I will do.?

Re: Power Supply

Hi Len!

Both of my Astron RS-35Ms gave up the ghost years ago, one from old age, the other from "controlled flight into terrain."

I now use several Powerwerx SS30DVs, one in Chester to power the K3 station, one at home to power the K2/100.? No RF noise that I've detected, and I've only heard the internal fan come on during long RTTY transmissions a couple of times--never during CW or SSB.

At home I also use the "new" Astron 50 amp switcher--same story, but it is a bit bigger and a lot more money.? The voltage has more adjustment.? I have it cranked to 14.5v.

The Powerwerx without a meter has two PP connections in front, and banana plug/binding posts in the rear.? A lot of bang for the buck.

I use Astron RS.35M with my 7300 and it's worked fine for me but it's the only one I have ever had...... so I have nothing to compare ?with.?

Re: Interest video about arrl

The magazines are a sore point for me.? Especially losing QEX.? I simply can not read it online, need that paper copy to see the schematics etc.

Trust.? Never conferred.? Difficult to earn and retain.? So easily destroyed...? And yet, there they are.

Re: Interest video about arrl

In the video he covers a little of the vulnerability.? Bottom line: ARRL's set up was primitive, naive, no defense at all, no backups, or where there were online backups they were encrypted and not returned after paying the ransom!? Couldn't possibly get worse!? They are still reconstructing the accounting data!? Sheesh.
