QRPPlus cabling

Kees Taverne

?Hi all, I own a QRPPlus (1st edition) boughjt it years ago, sold it and now it is back again.
But there is an issue ith this radio. On the second PCB (from above) there is J3 with some connections to the front.
The first wire (red) has been burned out. So I will start to replace the cable but probably some other oner reconizes this issue and knows what causes this.

Further I have a question about the VFO. As I can remember when I owned it for the first time I could quickly jump between HAM bands but that does not seem to work anymore.
Another HAM told me that there has been a firmware upgrade could someone confirm that and if so was that an eprom delivery or can it be updated yourself?

I think I have to check the complete radio first and find a suitable microphone.

Than in advance for all answers.

Hi Kees,
I am sorry that you are having problems with the radio. I have never heard of this happening.
J3 on the AF-Board is the connector that is used to send the audio to the front panel and swr meter. Pin 1 specifically is connected to the front "phones" jack.
If it is burned the only thing I can think of is:
1. Something was plugged into the phones jack that had a lot of current.
2. C41 (the large 220Mf cap that is connected to the output of the LM386 audio IC shorted (but even that should not cause a burned wire)

There are no power connections even close to that area.
In any case, if the wire is burned, then most likely it affected the audio amp area for the phones.

As far as skipping around in frequencies, there is only one way that I know to do this. see page 6 of the manual. the MEM button is used to skip large sections as stored memory locations. If this is not working most likely the battery needs to be replaced CR2016. In order to do that properly the top board has to be removed carefully and new battery placed on the AF board (the board you will be looking at for your burned wire issue).
I have attached some images to help.

I hope this is helpful

Kees;
About upgrades to the firmware. These would be un-obtanium for most. Unless you had access to the upgrade and an emprom burner.
W1HUE published way back in 1997 (23 years ago) this:

----quoting from the January 1997 QRP Journal -----
Index has made several "firmware" upgrades for the QRP+ available
as new EPROMs for the very nominal charge of S6 .00 plus return
of the old EPROM. The most recent version of which I am aware is
designated "Rev 4C". (Note that this is model specific - the QRP++
may well use a different EPROM.) The Rev 4C EPROM contains
several programming changes that affect the internal keyer and the
switched capacitance audio filter (SCAF). If you do not have this latest
version, you should contact Index for an upgrade. How do you tell if
you have this version or not? Simple: If you did not upgrade, you don't
have it! If you obtained your rig used and don't know its hi story, a
couple of simple tests wi ll determine whether or not you have the latest
EPROM: If the internal keyer speed changes in increments of 5 WPM,
you don't have it. If the keyer speed changes in increments of 1 WPM
but an external keyer cannot be fo llowed above about 27 WPM, then
you still don't have it (you probably have Rev 03).

This is all I know about this. This radio is an oldy but a goodie. The radio would have to be completely redesigned to use a different more up to date processor.
the 80C39.
When I was working at Intel back in the mid eighties this was one of my products.. it is basically an 8051 CPU running at 8mhz. A real workhorse. Most likely this was programmed in Assembler so upgrading this would be a real chore.

More information about the QRP + is located here:
He no longer owns his qrp+, I do... I got it in a round about way.
There is tons of information here. I am not sure how long he intends to keep this web page up though.
