QMX died before i got a chance to transmit.
8
Hello, I ordered a fully assembled QMX in April, and got it about two weeks ago. It died while i was listening to it. I maybe have listened to it a half hour total or less. i was switching bands and got a real sharp noise from my speaker, and then the screen went blank. not sure what the problem is, but i have only listened with it, and haven't even transmitted yet as a dont do cw yet, and i was building a mic for ssb. I was hoping to try digital modes on sunday, but i was just about to tune in to see if i could hear the 10m FT8 band as its a nice and sunny day, and i haven't been able to even hear ft8 on 10m as of yet. but its been pretty stormy here when i have been able to look at it during the week. I have not open it up as i am not sure if Hans will want me to return it as is since it is so new, or if im stuck and have to repair myself. I really dont think this should have died after only about 20 minutes of just listening to it. i know things happen, but i would have just bought the kit. It did turn itself off a couple times randomly before this. TBH i thought this was just my battery turning off since the draw is so low on receive. but maybe there was a problem in the first place? I did measure a resistance a couple places, and battery terminal is fine, but the antenna to ground is less than a half ohm? also not sure how to contact hans for what to do, but i replied to the email sent and tried the "help ticket" but not sure i should message him here? thanks, Ted

QMX SSB in mobile?

I have a QMX coming soon and was wondering now that SSB is included, do you think the QMX would perform well in a mobile environment? Perhaps with a amplifier/tuner? TY! Jeff

QMX SWR measurement is not correct while using with PA
6
Hello! I've noticed that SWR protection stops TX when I try to use QMX with one of my PA. When I measure SWR with connected PA threw QMX hardware test it shows 1.8-1.9. And it causes SWR protection actuation (even if SWR protection level is 3 or 4 by the way...). When I do SWR measurement with Nano VNA or another transceiver they measure SWR = 1.1. So it looks like QMX is incorrect. That is strange... When I do not use PA then QMX SWR measurement tool provides correct figures (compared with Nano VNA). Any ideas? BR/Sergey UB3AZK

QMX 60-15M Processor IC203 PB1 (Pin 36, LPF1 Q510 Gate control) Not Working
#output
#30m
#bias
#filter
#qmx
Good Morning! I just finished building a QMX 60-15M kit that was shipped 2-April-2025, and found no CW output on 20 and 30M. Here is what I've measured and found: The gate voltage on Q509 (LPF 0 pin diode switch) is 3.3V for 60 and 40M bands and 0V on all others (normal). The gate voltage on Q511 (LPF 2 pin diode switch) is 3.3V for 17 and 15M bands and 0V on all others (normal). The gate voltage on Q510 (LPF 1 pin diode switch) is 0V on all bands (not normal, should be 3.3V for 30 and 20M). If I short the drain on Q510 on 20 and 30M, I get power out for those bands, so the pin diodes and LPF 1 are working. The gate to Q510 is has continuity to pin 36 (PB1) of the processor IC203. Resistance of all three gate pins to ground is about 30 megohms. None of the gates are shorted to each other. I've tried all three of the most recent firmware releases (1_02_000, 1_01_007, and 1_00_027) with the same result. I've tried a factory reset. The Hardware Tests/Diagnostics for Transmit on 30 and 20M show high Bias SMPS currents of around 61 mA, and no TX power out. All bias currents on other bands are normal at 30 mA. Any suggestions for further testing, a different conclusion, or where to go from here would be greatly appreciated. Also, does anyone know of a way to test the ports on this processor? Thanks in advance, and 73, Gil, AA9FT

QMX+ Diagnostic Sweeps of 160m Band
6
Hi, When running the various diagnostic sweeps I find all bands except 160m seem reasonable similarities to those shown in the manual. But the 160m seems way off. Any ideas what may be causing this and what I should be checking? I'll include screenshots of the sweeps. Many thanks Ian

I made a protective cover for the QMX+ which also doubles as a stand and storage!
5
Hello everyone! I think this is my first post in the forums and I wanted it to be a good one. I've been thinking about a good cover for the QMX+ since i pack very compact, but don't want my QMX+ frontpanel to be destroyed. So i came up with the 3D-model below. I'd love if you like the model and come with suggestions. I am open to modify or add versions as needed! https://www.printables.com/model/1300629-qmx-frontcover-stand-and-storage The panels are all dual-sided and can be put on the front or back of the QMX+. Below are some photos:

QMX PLUS
3
Hi all I have a qmx plus and I ran 13.6 volts into it on a first time power up it worked for abt 5 min then it shut dow. Then i read about the max of 12v vcc. I am assuming that I lost the buck converter. I have replaced all the sbject transitors that showed bad via the ohm meter still no joy. does anyone of you smart ones have test point diagram fot the buck converter so i can trace it and trouble shoot . thanks you a bunch Joe

Qmx L501 inductor Partially broken

Received the kit from FedEx in a perfectly intact box. The content check was positive with the exception of the L501 inductor with the partially broken edge. Can this defect affect the operation of the kit?

How to enable the internal mic on QMX+ 1.00.02
4
There are three menu choices for enabling mic input, 1-ext mic on paddle jack, 2-internal sound card audio (digi modes) and 3-two tone test audio. How do I enable the internal mic on the front panel? I'm new to this, just built the radio yesterday, I apologize if I'm not following protocol here. THANKS! -- Larry N2AJX

QMX+ Pulse in headphones on TX
9
Hi guys I have built a QMX+ Wound for 12V. FW 1_02_000 From the get go, on TX, I have in my headphones a pulsing sound. No tone to it. It¡¯s a fast pace pulse. Maybe 3-4hz. When using the SWR tune tool the led on my ZM-2 will flash at the same rate. Keying the mic and listening on a SDR I can hear the pulse in the background. I am unable to hear it in a CW tone on the SDR but it is in my headphones on SSB and CW. The pulse does not toggle the rf, it just seems to be embedded in it. On the face of it. It transmits fine. Randomly I get ear bending white noise on start up. (My QMX build went fine and its functioning well, go figure) Hoping someone might have a pointer on this. Have dummy load, dvm and power is meter on the way¡. Thanks in advance. Ian. ZL1HIM

CW offset & sidetone in 1_02_00 (QMX)
5
Installed the latest firmware. I prefer a lower sidetone, so tried setting both offset and sidetone freq to 600. Normally run 580Hz, but it looks like 600 is the minimum value. This does not seem to persist, when I go back into the menu, I see it has changed back to 700... On my QCXs I just set sidetone freq to 580 and all is good. Any ideas pls ?

How to enable transmit for winlink
8
Hi folks I have read most of the info on setting up with li k and the qmx...I seem to be able to control the radio and get a receive sig al shown in the vara waterfall. However, when I try to connect, you can see the pauses or bla k portio s on the waterfall, but the rig does not go I to tx mode. Appreciate hearing g what I might be missing. I have tried setting radio to flex and kenwood...same results Cheers Scott

New QMX died while listening
2
I received my fully assembled QMX about a week ago, but dont have a mic, or a cw key yet. I got the high bands since I am a tech so i could use 10m now, and planning on getting my general in june/july. so all i have done is listen a bit. I was hoping to try digital modes with it sunday afternoon. but sunday morning, i turned it on to listen again and about 5 minutes in i change a few bands and then i hear a sharp sound out of my speaker and the radio goes dead. never to power on again. double checked the power supply which was good. even tried a second one and same thing, no power. i took some multimeter readings while it was unplugged and power doesn't seem to be shorted to ground. however measuring resistance between antenna and ground is very low resistance, like under 1 ohm. i haven't opened it up yet as i haven't heard back from Hans. not sure what next steps would be. Thanks for the help / direction. Ted

Two SMD component questions regarding a QMX+
2
D505 has an odd appearance, it's missing the T4 label and appears damaged, but tests fine with a multimeter diode tester The 331 SMD inductor in the second photo has a missing bit on the top. Should either of these be replaced?

CW Practice / Rag Chew
3
My next CW practice session will be May 19 at 18:00 EDT / 22:00 UTC on 40 meters. Anyone and everyone is welcome. These practice sessions are intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions. Details: Date - May 19 Time - 18:00 EDT / 22:00 UTC Band - 40 Meters How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF. That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO. Reply to this email if you have questions. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR CW IS Ed AB8DF_._,_._,_

QMX Feature Request - On Board CAT/serial monitor tool
2
What it does: use the LCD to display characters received on the CAT serial port and characters transmitted over the serial port. The RX data could appear on the top line and the TX data on the bottom line. Perhaps an indicator of some sort that shows that data is being received by the QMX. even if the data can't be decoded as printable ascii characters. Perhaps, when the CAT/serial monitor is active then disable the terminal applications mode so that a newline character on the serial port doesn't take over the port for terminal applications. Why? I've been developing microcontroller code to read VFO A on the QMX and display frequency and band info on a remote LCD. I first wrote a QMX CAT simulator program so that I could test and debug the microcontroller code easily. Also I have verified with PuTTY that the QMX responds correctly to incoming CAT commands. When I connect the microcontroller via USB to the QMX I am unable to establish that the two are communicating. This CAT/serial monitor diagnostic tool would help me answer the questions: Is the QMX receiving serial data on the CAT com port? What data CAT commands/data is received? What is being sent by the QMX over the com port. This little rabbit hole opened up with this thread: /g/QRPLabs/topic/scripting_language/112779657 In which I suggest the OM use a microcontroller to speak CAT to the QMX. But then I asked myself if I could actually accomplish what I suggested and, here we are. I am aware of 8.7.3 CAT command test and 8.7.4 CAT monitor in the manual but it's not clear to me how to connect both a terminal and microcontroller to the QMX over the single USB-C port. It would be very helpful if the QMX itself could tell me on the LCD what is happening on the serial port. Thanks and 73, Matt

Dreaded dead transmit from SSB Calibration routine
22
On my mid-band QMX ....I wasn't going to do it. I'd read several horror stories but then, as an "experimental amateur radio station operator" I couldn't help myself. The SSB calibration routine was a disaster. Blew the 2A inline PSU fuse, and took out the BS170s. I replaced the BS170s with new ones on hand and applied enough heat, visually checked for other damage (none found), then sparked it up. Receives fine and all functions appear to work (Mode, Volume, Step, Band etc). However, when I try to transmit on CW into a dummy load, I'm only seeing about 340mW on 40m and progressively less as I go up in frequency... Any ideas as to where to turn to next would be very much appreciated... 73, Robert VE7ZN
