Ultimate 3S Issue
3
It has been a while since I've used my Ultimate 3S for WSPR and it has worked flawlessly in the past. However now, no signal seems to be transmitting and the oscillator calibration with GPS keeps increasing the frequency constantly. It is now up to 27,011,491 and climbing. This can't be right. Any ideas of what the problem may be?

No TX or RX ¡ª Seeking Next Steps for Troubleshooting
5
#qmx
Hi everyone, I recently completed building my QMX kit and it seemed to go well on the surface. The unit powers on just fine, the display works, menus respond, and voltages on the 3.3V and 5V SMPS look normal. However, I'm getting no power output on any band, and I haven't heard any received signals either (just noise). Here's what the diagnostics look like: I've verified all diode orientations match the silkscreen and build guide, and I've done my best to verify good continuity on the pads for all of the toroids. Maybe there's a bad solder joint somewhere less obvious. Does anyone have advice on where to look next or more checks you¡¯d recommend to further narrow this down? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Joe

QMX 9v Power Supply
14
#9v
Hello, I am getting ready to build my QMX and want to do so in the 9v configuration. Question is the manual says it runs at 9v or "a little over", so the question is. Will the radio be happy and safe to operate with a Bioenno 9v battery. Their website says the battery is regulated to discharge "around 9.6v" Anyone have any experience with using this configuration of Bioenno 9v and the QMX? If so how is it working for you? Thank and 73's W7YWF. (Mike)

CW Practice / Rag Chew
4
On 4/29/25 I had a CW practice / rag chew session on 17 meters. I worked four stations: Conditions were OK with some QSB. SSN = 134, SFI = 154, A = 4, K = 1. My next CW practice session will be May 06 at 0900 EDT / 13:00 UTC on 20 meters. Anyone and everyone is welcome. This practice is intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions. Details: Date - May 06 2025 Time - 0900 EDT / 13:00 UTC Band - 20 meters How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF. That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO. Reply to this email if you have questions. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR CW IS Ed AB8DF

QMX+ Build - No Power on Diagnostics screen (pressing T)
10
#power
#test
#troubleshooting
I have corrected all the issues with my enameled torroid soldering joints, so those look reasonable now on all bands. That said, I have no power whatsoever when pressing "T" on the diagnostics screen. I am using 3 cell LIPOs charged to 11.9vdc (checked after charging with multimeter) for power. T501 wound for 12v. - Initial startup was at 7v, just to be safe. No issues or magic smoke so slowly raised voltage to 12V with no issues. No pops or anything else. - Checked T507 by removing and testing, then reinstalling. - Removed and rewound T501, RWTST, to eliminate concerns of over twisting the wires. - Rewound T401 and checked for continuity on the 3 pairs, then installed it. - T502 has continuity and the correct amount of wraps. - The dummyload I am using is one I purchased along with the kit. Assembly was enjoyable and it measures 49.5 ohms. When I press "T" I get 0.0 power. I checked the SWR protection set it higher, and restarted the radio, but still get 0.0 on the diagnostics screen. I then turned the SWR protection completely, then restarted the radio and still 0.0. The power transistors DO get slightly warm, but not suddenly. From what I can tell, everything is as it should be, but I'm still getting no power to the dummyload. I have no actual antennas yet, but should have one completed in a couple hours. I checked several patch cords (between radio and dummyload) and they all are working correctly, but still no power. What should I be checking now? Is there a test procedure for this specific issue? There has to be others who have encountered this before... Thanks again, btw... Ahand59

QMX+ Final failure on 12m
6
I have an odd situation here with my 12V QMX+. I could transmit normally on all bands with a 9V power supply. But at 12V when I transmitted on 12m (24.910 MHz) the current draw was quite a bit higher than on the other bands. My power supply's current limit was set at 1.0A and it hit that. All other bands drew less than an amp. After transmitting at that frequency the receive current had jumped to 300 mA (previously about 100 mA) and all the other bands transmitted about half the output power they had before. I replaced the finals and it happened again. Transmitting on 12m at 12V caused a failure in the finals. (Possibly Q507 as well. I get no RF output at all on any band now.) Any ideas on what might cause that one band to zap the finals? I've looked over its lowpass filter and don't see any visible shorts, and the inductors have the correct cores and number of turns. I was able to transmit on 10m before trying 12m and it seemed to work, although with less power out than the other bands.

QMX+: low RX sensitifity @ 6m / 22 dB noise floor / 1500 Hz wistle

QMX+ First 1000 QSOs Impresions
3
After initial hickups after assembly, i deployed my QMX+ as base/main rig. 3 months have passed making QSOs with it and the following is the statistic, all FT8 Worked QSO: 1004 Worked DXCC: 86 CQ Zones: 20 ITU Zones:27 Continents:5 Longest contact: Fiji 16231km Other than that i made contacts with few Australia 15400km and New Caledonia 15900km away from my QTH All results on 20M with 3.2W and under the roof dipole. Overall very happy with how this rig performs, nothing can beat the price range vs performance it provides. Bad weather here is over, time to deploy some new antennas for this bad boy, and improve the statistics :)

Jeff Moore W1NC - QMX Rev. 1 Repair
3
The QMX Rev. 1 that I had assembled some time ago recently stopped working after making many CW and SSB contacts with the beta SSB firmware. By-the-way, the calibration went nicely. No issues there. It would turn on with no display but wouldn't turn off. Certain the CPU was dead, I was contemplating chucking it in the spare parts box and just continuing on with my QMX+. However, I decided to send it to Jeff to see if he could salvage it, and I'm glad I did. Jeff discovered the CPU wasn't dead and was able to get it working again in perfect order. His turnaround time and explanation of findings was great. If your QMX goes down I highly recommend Jeff to get it working great again. If it's beyond your repair capability, he's got the experience, tools, test equipment, parts and talent to make it happen. Thanks again Jeff. 72, Randy NR5N

PTT over CAT - WSJT-X vs fldigi
#fldigi
#QMXplus
#ssb
#wsjt-x
I just updated to the new SSB firmware on QMX+ Rev. 3 and was hoping to try out MSK144 mode in WSJT-X. (Probably not enough power to be heard by anyone, but still.) I have found the PTT over CAT control to be inconsistent when in USB mode. Usually the first TX works and then the rest briefly trigger then un-trigger PTT. (DIGI mode still works just great.) Looking at the CAT monitor doesn't show anything odd (no early RX; sent) and it's not triggering SWR protection or anything. PTT over CAT in USB mode in fldigi---also using Hamlib, same Kenwood TS-480 config---works fine. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that WSJT-X is sending either 'TX;' or 'TX1;' depending on the configuration; while fldigi is sending 'TX0;' which for some reason is more reliable in convincing the QMX+ to transmit. Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions or ways to convince WSJT-X to send 'TX0;' instead? TNX 73 de Tim AF0CQ

QMX Build Not powering up. IC101 gets hot
2
Hi all, I completed my QMX build, and it won't power on. I took my time and was very meticulous. Or so I thought. When I power it on with the left encoder, nothing happens but I notice that IC101 gets slowly warm then hot if I don't pull the power. I can have the power connected but IC101 doesn't get warm until I press the left encoder. I can also connect it to my laptop and see it, but I don't dare leave the power connected for long. Has anyone seen this or have recommendations on where to start troubleshooting? Many thanks Aaron

PIN diode bias current unstable
36
#qmx
Hi all, I built my Rev 1 QMX kit a while back and got bitten by the shorted diode on the SMPS board. After fixing that, the QMX works very well. However, in the hardware diagnostics screen the PIN diode bias current is all over the place. If I put the rig into transmit with the dummy load the current goes from about 17mA to about 70mA and everywhere in between. Any idea if this is an issue and where I should start looking? TIA. Jason

QMX - Audio-out levels configurable?
2
Hi, I have a question relating to audio levels as heard in a pair of earphones¡ As I change from mode to mode, listening on a pair of earphones, I find that changing from CW to DIGI is an ear-blowing experience! So much so that I take out the earphones or greatly reduce the audio-out (volume) when doing so. Moving on to USB, the audio level returns to a safe level. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix for it? I can¡¯t find any reference to mode-specific audio-out levels in the operation manual or in group messages. Mine is a factory assembled QMX 80-20 using v1.02.000 firmware. Thanks, Mark VK2MOH

Scripting language?
5
Hello! I just upgraded my QMX+ to the current official version with SSB. Got good reports on the 40M swap net. Woohoo! I was using it with my "Tiny Linear" project, which is a 70W amp crammed into a too-small enclosure, with a switchable LPF salvaged from a defunct Yaesu 756-Pro radio, and a cute little touch screen in the front. I am beyond impressed... clean SSB out of a digital PA. I'm thinking of integrating the QMX+ ( or the QMX - I've got one of those too ) into another project: my "Medium Linear". This is a pair of MRF300's in a wraparound case from a Heathkit Single-Bander. No, I didn't cannibalize an actual Single-Bander - the case was a flea market buy. A QMX or plus integrated into the Medium Linear would turn it into an integrated 400W transceiver. But to do that, I need to get at least the band info out of the QMX+. Given that the software is closed-source...and encrypted, I have no reasonable way to figure out how to do that. Yeah, there are select signals on the card, but the LPFs are shared between bands. My linear also shares LPFs, but possibly different ones. Hans was going to implement some sort of scripting language. Maybe that could leave the back burner now that SSB is real? - Jerry, KF6VB
