Hi all I updated the SSB beta testing webpage of the brave, here: https://qrp-labs.com/qmxp/ssbbeta.html and released firmware version 1_01_004 to it. I did not solve problems with SSB phase distortion calibration, but I added a couple of additional failsafes. I am inclined to stop calling it beta. But I welcome your opinions on this. I know there is more to do, there will always be more to do... I think I would be more comfortable calling it the official version and moving onward. Having it all properly documented in the operating manual and all in one place would simplify things and reduce confusion. What do you think? These are the changes: Bug fix: Incorrect PA voltage display on the Diagnostics screen due to 57 / 10 being rounded to 5, as discussed in this forum. Change TX color in the diagnostics screen from red to blue, to avoid confusion since red things are errors. Added two more USB Virtual COM serial ports. QMX now presents itself as a USB hub with a 24-bit stereo 48ksps USB sound card and three USB Virtual COM serial ports attached. The advantage of this is that you can be running WSJT-X connected to a serial port, then run a terminal emulator connected to a different serial port; then you can make adjustments to the gain for example, to get the WSJT-X SNR meter at your desired level. You can also use other tools like "Input analysis" in the "PC and CAT" menu, which displays incoming audio tones from the PC; previously this could not be used unless you used VOX for Tx/Rx control. The CAT monitor can also be useful to be able to monitor incoming CAT commands and responses in realtime on one port, with CAT running on another. And going forward, for developers who wish to experiment with BASIC scripting, it will also be important to have multiple serial COM ports. Added CAT LC; command to retrieve LCD contents: it returns a 32-character string, whose contents are whatever is on the LCD at that instant. Any custom characters are replaced by spaces. The only exception to this is the VFO indicator which is replaced by an 'A' or 'B' character. Added CAT commands SA; which returns the AGC dB value (dB of attenuation applied by the AGC system). Added CAT command SM; which returns the S-meter value. This value is in dB. To convert to S-units, divide by 6. Added CAT command PC; which returns the power level during TX. The value is in tenths of a Watt. For example response PC45; would mean 4.5W. Added CAT command SW; which returns the SWR meter reading during TX. The value is in units of hundredths. For example response SW142; would mean the SWR measured is 1.42. Added CAT command SS to get/set SSB input source. Valid values are 0 (USB from PC), 1 (Two-tone test generator) or 2 (External microphone). I migrated AF, RF, Image, LPF and Test ADC I/Q terminal tools to the standard ASCII-art graphing tool I developed. Previously every tool had its own piece of code, which of course were copy-and-pasted from each other and largely similar. The advantage is also that the standard ASCII-art graphing tool I developed, also has an interface to display a miniature version of the graphs on a 20 x 16-pixel canvas, shown in a 4 x 2 character section at the right-hand side of the LCD. This means all these sweep tools are now also available on the LCD and buttons, without needing to use the terminal emulator to see them. They are all under the "Hardware tests" menu. I created a new tool called "PA mod. test" specifically to check the operation of amplitude modulator. This is under the "Hardware tests" menu both on the terminal interface and the LCD user interface. Attached is an example of a correctly functioning amplitude modulator. The x-axis shows the DAC value, the y-axis shows the measured PA voltage. A correct result is a straight line that goes (almost) from zero to (almost) the QMX supply voltage; a 12V unit will saturate at about a DAC value of around 2500 as shown. My QMX Plus is approximately 25% down on the Test Certificate power, so I am looking to replace one of the BS170 FETs. The Farnell catalogue has many different suffixes to their BS170 devices. Should I select a particular device?

All, Ive loaded.004 and it seems to work well on my QMX 80-20. I’ve made a number of successful contacts on ssb. On my QMX 20-10 it has distorted audio after the update. I did a factory reset then calibrated. It was after this that the transmit audio is very distorted. I went back and changed the settings to the last known working numbers but it’s still distorted. Can anyone tell me if the new .006 has helped this? I’m about to load it in both QMXs and the QMX+ and was wondering if it has helped? Does a firmware update require a factory reset and calibration or leave it be? Thanks.. Don N6NLX

Hi Hans. I have gone over the checks again. I can connect with putty just fine when USB ports is set to 1. With ports set to 2, putty brings up the terminal screen if I connect to either of ttyACM0 or ttyACM1, but pressing Enter does nothing, no response from the QMX+. I forgot the first rule of radios - if something works, don't fix it. Anyway, I wanted to replace the diode that I have been using for the Rev 2 board modification with a smaller diode. I replaced it and found that the radio would indicate high SWR every time I transmitted, so I put the original diode back in. Now I can't hear any RF signals. I can't even hear the "normal" birdies. I'm attaching a picture of my "work". Have I ruined L503? I'm also afraid that I may have destroyed the trace at that end of L503. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. 73, Mike, KL7MJ

Morning all, I was wondering if there was a way of reducing the power output in the configuration rather than simply by reducing the supply voltage. I would like to drop to around 2-2.5 W for general use as I’m hoping to complete my QRP DXCC on 20m with my QMX once it is back up and running. Many thanks. Piggly

On 4/28/25 I had a CW practice / rag chew session on 20 meters. I worked three stations: Conditions were OK with some QSB. SSN = 119, SFI = 156, A = 6, K = 1. KA1HCF, Gil in St. Augustine was using a FX4C that was way off frequency. I run with a very wide filter for the practice sessions but I had to RIT almost a full KHz to hear him. I could not find an email for him. If Gil or anyone needs help with getting on the air, the Michigan QRP Club has a weekly Zoom meeting specifically to help folks with any Ham questions or any help that they may need. Hello all, So I updated to firmware 07 and wanted to run the calibration, but I'm getting PA modulation error. Tells me to run the PA MOD test, but I just get a straight line. What can be causing this? Thank you, F4JVU

Good day. My QMX+ V3 seems to be stuck in firmware update. By providing a new firmware file it will try to initialize, and after a few minutes gets stuck on Band Version. Stays there for a minute or so, then reverts to the clock. After that, I can get to screens with garbage. I can sometimes get to the Menus and beyond, in and out to non-sense screens. Both push buttons seem to work, because I can easily navigate in the menu, until the system gets stuck on a choice, then it goes back to the clock. ith a right button push, I can go back to garbage screens and sometimes into the menu system. After assembling a QDX rig for a local ham I received a couple of the QDX PA mod PC boards made by WB2CBA which have the FDT86256 mosfets. They have a max voltage of 150V compared to the 60V of the BS170. Since I like to experiment I decided to try and adapt one of the boards to my QMX+. I filed off the two "tabs" opposite the mosfets being careful not to file off any of the traces. It fit perfectly where the BS170's were. After some testing it seems to work well. My QMX+ is presently wired for 9V and I have a Buck-Boost converter stuck on the back set at 10V so I can use any battery I like from 5V-30V. On 80m-30m I can easily get 5w with the 10v input. Since I like to "play with fire" I plugged in my 12.6V battery and got 6.5w-8W on the lower bands. The mosfets stayed very cool....into a dummy load. While playing on FT8 with my Hexbeam and low SWR sometimes the finals got warm and actually got pretty hot on some of the higher bands but kept work fine. If anyone else out there can or wants to give it a try, especially if you have the proper test equipment please let me/everyone know what you found. Hi all, Yesterday, I finally found the time to finish building my second QMX (Rev.2, 10m - 20m). Initial setup was easy, and after loading the latest firmware, all tests ran smoothly. Today was its first use, which was also successful with a few FT8 QSOs. But after about 3 hours, the QMX said goodbye with a loud pop. The QMX is built for 9V and was powered by the stabilized 9V output of a TelentCell LF4100. The antenna was a precisely tuned vertical. Will replacing C107 be enough? I'm worried about Q107. Thanks for letting me join the group. I placed an order for a qmx kit when I found out about the experimental ssb firmware. The boards look to be a work of art. Short of printing a mini mic housing anyone have a recommendation for an amazon mic they have gutted and put the proper element in? I have the modded mic I did for my sbitx I will try, but the element in it now may have too much gain. Looking forward to using this in the field and maybe in the shack! Ryan KK6DZB

Seeing oddities on various bands calibrations., first pic is the old v .003 cal, followed by stages of calibration with v .007. Any idea what the numbering is? and why the end result is so different to the v .003 Is there a problem?
