QCX Classic Case WANTED 3
I post a message like this every 6months or so in hope... I'm looking for someone who has an original QCX Classic case they no longer want. This is the BaMa Tech case that was sold by QRP Labs for sometime. The case is not available new any more. If you have such a case or maybe a cased QCX Classic that is fried and dead and you want to sell, please contact me andy.mm0fmf AT gmail.com. I'm in the UK and Brexit etc. has made shipping to and from the UK much more "fun and challenging" now. But if you are in the EU or in the US I have friends/relatives in either that will handle shipping to me making it simple for you :-) Here's hoping. Thanks Andy, MM0FMF

Super loud clunk after all Dits and Dahs 8
QMX+, Rev1 board, 1-00-027 Program I checked the advanced section and all 3 items are set to Enable. I still have a horrible Clunk when keying the QMX+. No clunk when not in transmit mode. So I think its when the PA gets switched on?? Please advise!

What do I check when QMX transmit stops working? 3
I connected my QMX to a 20 meter QCX 50 watt amp and the result is failed QMX transmit (no power). My QCX does OK with this amp but the QMX took a permanent dive for some reason. Receive is fine, but transmit is now zero. Transmit does draw power from the supply but offers no RF. Supply power to QMX is exactly 12V Supply power to 50W amp is 20V Each has its own regulated power supply Ken AA7JC

QMX 9 #12v
Morning all. I recently received my QMX (hi bands) and I¡¯m very impressed. I have a QCX Mini on 40m which is a fine radio but the QMX feels more smooth somehow; probably psychosomatic! Anyway, with all the discussion around the sensitivity of the finals to heat when running at 12V I was wondering if anyone had tried improving the heatsink on those transistors. I am pretty sure a small heatsink could be fitted in place of the washer and might help with avoiding issues when working that POTA DX at 12V. Thoughts anyone? 73 de G7RUX k

QCX-mini Blown IC? 2
Hi all, My Dad just finished his QMX-mini build and after adjustments,(before casing) accidentally laid it on a spiral notebook and shorted something out. Now he gets the message ¡°Use original IC¡±. The only reference to this in the groups is from 2017 where someone tripped a protection fuse in an IC and needed to update firmware I think. Any idea if this is a simple fix? Is it a hardware, software or both issue? This is the 20M version that uses IC2 AT mega328. Is the IC2 likely the culprit? Dad ordered another kit thinking it¡¯s all fried but I suspect it can be a somewhat easy fix if we can trace down the issue. thanks all, Scott KF0OUH QMX builder (and SSB user :) )

QMX: After installing Beta, processing in LCD and nothing else
Hi, After the installation of the latest Beta, the LCD shows only processing. Is this normal? Few minutes later i un/replugged the powersupply and it works as expected, ok, a little bit better than expected. A big Thanks to Hans for this awesome peace of hamgadget. 73, Jens

CW Practice / Rag Chew Session 2
On 4/12/25 I had a CW practice / rag chew session on 30 meters. I worked one station: Date / Time Call Bnd Mode Power Rec Snt Name SPC# Comments Off 4/12/2025 18:51 N5EEI 30 CW 100 579 339 Dave TN K3 at 100 watts 100 ft sloper doublet 19:10 Conditions were crummy. SSN = 120, SFI = 170, A = 18, K = 3. My next CW practice session will be April 20 at 09:00 EDT / 13:00 UTC on 30 meters. Anyone and everyone is welcome. This practice is intended for operators who are new to CW or they need some practice. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR YOUR CW IS. Mistakes are OK. Poor fists are OK. Slow speed is OK. Really slow speed is OK. This practice is meant for you to improve your CW. I will do my best to adjust to your skill level. Operate at any power level. If several stations show up, I will operate as a round-table control station. I will do it as a round-table so everyone gets a chance to transmit. Please listen to my directions. Details: Date - April 20 2025 Time - 09:00 EDT 13:00 UTC Band - 30 Meters How to find me - I will find a clear frequency and call CQ. Go to the Reverse Beacon Network and search for my call sign AB8DF. That will tell you what frequency I am on. Tune your station to that frequency and if you hear me give me a call. If there is a QSO in progress, please wait for a break in the action. Then send your callsign. If I hear you, I will invite you to join the QSO and start a round-table QSO. Reply to this email if you have questions. IT DOES NOT MATTER HOW POOR CW IS Ed AB8DF

QMX+ Front Panel Soldering - Alternate Method 6
My QMX+ hasn¡¯t arrived yet so I can¡¯t check this out myself. Step 2.23 of the assembly manual shows installing the font panel plate at the beginning. This results in a narrow gap for soldering the 16 pins at step 10. So my question is: can using the four front panel screws, spacers, nuts etc but without the panel itself, provide sufficient alignment for the two boards (and eventually to the front panel) to allow soldering the 16 pins of step 10 ¡°in the clear¡±. It seems like it would save hassle and result in better solder joints - but I'm only guessing.

Thank you Hans 3
I just want to drop a THANKS for Hans. I have built many of his kits, and enjoyed building, using, and make contact with each of them. I completed the QMX mid band this week and have made CW, FT8, and SSB contact over the past couple days. The QMX is more difficult to build than some of his earlier kits, but it is amazingly engineered, and works very well. Hans, Thank you for designing and offering great kits for the Amateur Radio community at a very cost effective value. Regards, Wilson (NT5AT)

QMX+ not measuring SWR 7
Sorry for all the questions, I thought I had everything working, but now when I open the measurements screen and press the button, nothing happens. It will do an SWR scan with the Serial interface but not just show when you press tune.

Liner Operation of QCX 50w Amp 10
Please comment. I'm thinking of investigating linear operation at reduced power, possibly up to 25W (~16v PS). Determine if it is necessary to be able to control PA bias currant individually. My test approach would be to test the PA linearity without a LPF (Lift thee LPF input capacitor and inductor and couple to a 50 ohm dummy load. Excite PA with low level and observe output with scope and spectrum analyzer as bias current is increased If linear operation cannot be obtained with reasonable bias due to mismatched IRF510s then provide for individual bias circuits.

A QRP EFHW antenna
Yesterday I have just built this EFHW antenna for my QDX and in a few weeks my QCX+ 20M band to be built in May: using a HB9ZHK kit and 10 meters of wire (precisely cut for 14.060MHz with a SWR of 1.13:1). I will add a very tiny 150pF SMD C1 capacitor in parallel of the primary to improve its efficiency in higher frequencies. This antenna is just spread out of my 4th floor balcony using a 5 meter long telescopic fishing pole. Today the 150pF SMD capacitor was soldered (second photo). It was not an easy task for a 80 years old OM with eyesight his age and shaky hands! You can compare the size of C1 with the size of the BNC plug. I had then to cut 10cm of wire then 10cm again and finally 6cm more because the addition of C1 modified the antenna but it works well now giving a SWR of 1.3:1 at 14.066MHz then 1.1:1 at 19.733MHz and 1.9:1 at 27.066MHz. If I want to use it on other bands I will have to add several lengths of wire connected by gold plated banana plugs. 73-Pierre-FK8IH

QMX+ Internal Microphone 7
Hi Hans and Group, Is there still the possibility that the SSB internal microphone can be made to work? I am not in a hurry, but I am unclear on that score. George K3GK

QMX Low Band Build 4
Hi Folks, I just completed my build of the second QMX (first high band had a bad PCM1804). Things appear to be working ok, but looking at the graphs, I think some tweaking of toroids is needed? Let me know. Thanks, ...Dave VE3AKK

PA mod for QMX+ 44
After assembling a QDX rig for a local ham I received a couple of the QDX PA mod PC boards made by WB2CBA which have the FDT86256 mosfets. They have a max voltage of 150V compared to the 60V of the BS170. Since I like to experiment I decided to try and adapt one of the boards to my QMX+. I filed off the two "tabs" opposite the mosfets being careful not to file off any of the traces. It fit perfectly where the BS170's were. After some testing it seems to work well. My QMX+ is presently wired for 9V and I have a Buck-Boost converter stuck on the back set at 10V so I can use any battery I like from 5V-30V. On 80m-30m I can easily get 5w with the 10v input. Since I like to "play with fire" I plugged in my 12.6V battery and got 6.5w-8W on the lower bands. The mosfets stayed very cool....into a dummy load. While playing on FT8 with my Hexbeam and low SWR sometimes the finals got warm and actually got pretty hot on some of the higher bands but kept work fine. If anyone else out there can or wants to give it a try, especially if you have the proper test equipment please let me/everyone know what you found. The info for the PC boards are here... https://github.com/WB2CBA/QDX-PA-MODIFICATION/blob/main/QDX%20FTD86256%20PA%20Modification%20Story.pdf Tim - K5DEZ

QMX+ with 1_01_03 FW- does GPS (QLG3) have a problem 3
I have FW 1_01_03 FW loaded on my QMX+ but am seeing problems with seeing any GPS plots when i have logged into Putty and checking the GPS Viewer. The System config - GPS source is set to QMX+ Internal. Is any one else with the Beta firmware having any issues with GPS?

Calibration Day 6
Finally after waiting 2 weeks to get a suitable Mic set up, today is the day. Was very impressed by the QMX+ setting itself up to make SSB. Tomorrow I go on air to test it out. Using the dummy load to test I only found one undesirable trait. Noted a spluttering on the audio that sounded a bit like RF feedback into the Mic input. However discovered that this was caused by activating "Mic noise cancelling". Left it disabled for now, thinking possibly phasing issue between internal and external mic? Incidentally the mic is a Chinese one for the usdx......I disconnected the internal speaker and corrected the wiring to suit. de VK6XT

QDX Transmit Power Drops 9
I just finished building a QDX board version 3 with the latest 1.10 firmware installed and have been testing it. I built it for 9v operation and am using a variable bench power supply to test it. I have made a few FT8 QSOs on both 40m and 20m, I am noticing the power starts out at about 4w and slowly drops to about 2w by the end of the FT8 transmission cycle. The voltage from the power supply is a rock solid 9v. The current draw on transmit starts at about 1.02 amps and drops to about .4 - .5 amps by the end of the transmission cycle. Is this normal and if not, what should I be looking at? 73 Doug WB5WRC

Installing the new SSB operating software
Installing the new SSB operating software on the QMX+ worked right away. Initial setup was completed without any instructions. Impressive work from the developer! By the way: You can see how to quickly dismantle a 20m antenna mast here. :) https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1EbbHBmeX6/
